Pope Alexander VI (1 January 1431 – 18 August 1503), born Roderic Borja (Italian: Borgia) was Pope from 1492 to 1503. He is the most controversial of the secular popes of the Renaissance and one whose surname became a byword for the debased standards of the papacy of that era. He was born at Xativa, Valencia, Spain, and his father's surname was Lanzol (Castilian) or Llançol (Catalan); he assumed his mother's family name of Borja on the elevation of his maternal uncle to the papacy as Calixtus III in 1455. Legacy Alexander gave away the temporal estates of the papacy to his children as though they belonged to him.
