Mercury and Uranus in favorable aspect

Astrological aspects: general introduction

The analysis of a natal chart must be as comprehensive as possible. This is what we do as we make our personalized reports available in our e-shop. It must be borne in mind that many astrologers concentrate on the interpretation of planets in signs and in houses, and of angles, without paying enough attention to aspects. On the contrary, we believe that when aspects involve personal planets between themselves or slow-moving planets, they are of fundamental importance. In all cases, they are at least as significant as the Ascendant or the Sun. This is particularly relevant when the orb is tight (i.e. when the aspect is exact). This is the criterion we apply for this new series of articles which describe how well-known personalities experience certain aspects.

Mercury and Uranus in harmonious aspect

In this new article, we are describing the effects of the positive relationship between the intellectual planets, namely Mercury and Uranus. We are concentrating on the major aspects, the sextile and the trine, because they are more visible.

Mercury is a personal planet related to communication in the wide meaning of the word, that of exchanges and quick mind. Mercury rules two zodiacal signs, Gemini and Virgo.

In Gemini, Mercury emphasizes learning and the development of knowledge. In Virgo, the planet focuses more on improvement requiring love for detail and for analysis. These distinct characteristics of Mercury illustrate well the wide range of the skills of this personal planet. It must be underlined that Gemini also concerns the written word, curiosity, and eloquence, whereas Virgo appreciates figures, constructive criticism, and science. When Mercury is well-aspected in a natal chart, all these areas are auspicious.

As for Uranus, he was discovered only in 1781. Since then, some astrologers consider that he is the "higher octave" of Mercury, that is, he has more or less the same features as Mercury, but to a higher and more abstract extent.

Whether this theory is accepted or not, Uranus must always be regarded as a planet which gives prominence to the realm of ideas and intuition – of intellectual nature, and not of emotional nature like Neptune – although Uranus strives to shake them up. He appreciates nothing more than pure creation and the principle of making a clean sweep of acquired knowledge so as to better move further. Uranus shuns conformism; he enjoys surprising people, and he feels comfortable when he is a pioneer, different from ordinary mortals. Contrary to Mercury, who innately adapts to his environment, Uranus is inflexible and wants to impose his will, even if it means that the outside world must comply with his conceptions.

As a consequence, the advantage of people having an auspicious link between Mercury and Uranus is that they potentially know how to express themselves in an astonishing and efficient way on progressist, original, or innovative topics.

They are able to stand up vigorously for the causes they deem important. They are not afraid to assert loud and clear their freedom of opinion.

We can state that in general a fortunate connection between the two planets proves to be very promising for intellectual abilities. Indeed, the persons concerned are at the same time rational – Mercury's quality – and extremely intuitive – Uranus' trait. They are often quick-witted, or they have dazzling outbursts or strokes of genius in their fields of interest. A nice explosive mix. Below, we are looking at how this is expressed in the four examples we have chosen.

In order to better explain this aspect, we are mentioning several well-known personalities (here Zendaya, Jacques Chirac, Eva Green, and Albert Camus). This article deliberately isolates the aspects so as to better describe them. For this reason, it claims on no account to be a psychological analysis of the celebrity in question, for whom many other articles are available in the "Focus" section.

It is possible to find thousands of other horoscopes having Mercury in favorable aspect with Uranus (or any other aspects), with the online tool search. The planets, positions in sign and in house as well as the orb, are configurable.

Zendaya

Let us honor the youngest case illustrating this aspect, namely the American comedian, former model, singer, and dancer Zendaya.

At the moment of birth, a nice trine links Mercury in Libra in the 8th House and Uranus in Aquarius in the 12th House. Uranus is noticeable, for he is in the sign he rules and at the same time in conjunction with the Ascendant. This angular position and this dignity, not to mention the dynamism coming from the number of his active aspects, endow him with overwhelming dominance in the chart, which deeply marks the personality of this young lady.

The least we can say is that the actress is already atypical because of her roots. With multiple origins – Afro-American from her father, German and Scottish from her mother – she grew up in an environment close to the entertainment world, rather intellect-oriented, since her mother managed a theatre.

The French magazine Le Point wrote about Zendaya that her CV resembles a list of events breaking the sound barrier. A comment that astrologers enjoy, because they would have used exactly the same wording to assess the Mercury-Uranus aspect of Zendaya's natal chart.

In addition, we find again that she uses provocation to draw public attention to causes she deems just and important.

Moreover, she claims the fact that females of color must be better represented in movies.

Besides, Zendaya was often known for her generous donations in favor of victims (here, this expression fully corresponds to the 8th and 12th Houses, i.e. donations and investments, as well as assistance to the destitute).

Jacques Chirac

President Jacques Chirac, who led France between 1995 and 2007, stood out for his lively and quite original style, which fits his Mercury-Uranus aspect.

In Chirac's chart, it must be noted that Uranus is in Aries and in the 2nd, in trine with Mercury, and in a loose angular aspect with the Midheaven. Both planets are definitely among the dominants, as well as the Sun and Jupiter, with a special mention for Uranus, who rules the Ascendant.

Chirac's intellectual qualities are obvious. During his studies leading to a scientific baccalaureate, he got interested in literature. Then he graduated from Sciences Po among the top three students of his year group in 1954, and he was admitted to the ENA (national school of administration) in the autumn of the same year.

Chirac showed deep curiosity about numerous topics throughout his whole life. Thus, one cannot help drawing a parallel between his passion for the arts and civilizations of Africa, of Asia, and of Latin America, in which, despite his more than busy schedule, he became almost an expert and an erudite, and the action of Uranus, drawn to originality and nonconformism.

When he was appointed prime minister, the man whom Georges Pompidou nicknamed the Bulldozer, owing to his dynamism and his vitality, imposed his casual and at the same time studious behavior.

Furthermore, we find again an unusual expression of his talents in 1998, when France experienced an unprecedented institutional period. The socialist president in those days, François Mitterrand, had to accept to work with Chirac, who was the main representative of the opposition. This occurred for the first time, and it is not surprising that a person having an auspicious Mercury-Uranus aspect has allowed to pave the way for this exploration.

Later on, with a view to winning the presidential election, Chirac carried out a thorough cleaning of his party, the RPR, and Charles de Gaulle's heritage. This is a different way for Uranus to indicate that he loves to put an end to things in order to better renovate them.

Nowadays, although the overall assessment of Chirac's terms of office shows mixed results, we believe that the effects of the Mercury-Uranus aspect are rather positive. He marked the spirits with his stand during the first Gulf War when he opposed George W. Bush.

Actually, Chirac's approach to a multipolar world is interesting and avant-garde, thus showing us that, in addition to Uranian characteristics, he had also those of his solar sign, Sagittarius, in which Mercury too is posited.

Eva Green

We are dealing once more with a comedian having an atypical personality. On the one hand, she was fortunate to be born in a well-off family which offered her a classic and middle-class education. On the other hand, she asserted quite early her street performer tendencies.

However, in any scenario, it is clear that Eva Green does not like to toe the line or to be listed in a catalog.

With Mercury in Cancer and in the 11th House, we see the mark of the numerous social contacts which probably helped her ascent in the world of entertainment. In trine with Uranus in Scorpio and in the 3rd House, Mercury emphasizes a certain desire for instability and the will to increase the number of experiences.

In fact, she lived between London and Paris, a very Mercurian duality. It must be added that the trine between Mercury in Cancer, the sign of home, and with Uranus in the 3rd, the House of short trips and of contacts, reinforces the proneness to move house, while allowing her to adapt herself easily.

In the movies, Green achieved world fame when she brilliantly played opposite James Bond, embodied by Daniel Craig, in Casino Royale. Yet, the independent young lady first sniffed at the scenario, and it was necessary to make a second attempt to convince her, with the success we are all aware of.

Her mother, the actress Marlène Jobert, doubted that the cinema environment would suit Green, thinking that her sensitivity might make her too vulnerable. This was plausible, given the tie between those two planets as well as the Sun, which highlights the Water element. What occurred afterwards proved Jobert wrong.

Albert Camus

Albert Camus / Author : United Press International public domain 1957 / CC BY-SA (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0)

One of the greatest French writers has a quite exact sextile between Mercury in Sagittarius and in the 3rd House, and Uranus in Aquarius and in the 5th House. The association of these two planets, the first one in the House of writing (for Mercury), and the second one in the House of creation (for Uranus) works wonders.

Albert Camus extensively made use of his talents as a novelist, a playwright, a committed essayist, and a philosopher. Indeed, Mercury in Sagittarius and in the 3rd had more than one string to this bow.

Camus' favorite subjects reflect equally well the potential of this aspect. He, who studied in Algiers, followed passionately the topic of the independence of his homeland. He advocated a peaceful solution to the conflict.

However, neither the Algerians, nor the Pieds-Noirs (Europeans born in Algeria) understood his stand immediately. It is true that his vision often stirred controversy, or were intellectually unsettling at least.

Camus developed the thesis of a humanism based on the awareness of the absurdity of life, while finding arguments to take action. He considered that he was a "citizen of the world", and he was concerned about the fate of victims, wherever they might be. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1957. The title of his first novel, L'Etranger, (The Stranger in the U.S., The Outsider in the U.K.) perfectly sums up for the astrologer the forces at play in his brilliant destiny.

Nonetheless, his destiny abruptly ended on 4 January 1960, at the age of 47 only, in an accident. He was a passenger in a powerful car driven by one of his friends, in Villeblevin, a small village in the Yonne department.

At this fateful moment, researchers may have observed that transiting Pluto was in square with natal Mercury in the 3rd (short trips), whereas transiting Mars was in opposition with the natal Midheaven (destiny), between Pluto and Saturn. Furthermore, transiting Mercury, ruler of the Ascendant (vitality) was in exact opposition with Pluto, ruler of the 3rd House.
