Saturn and Your Part of Seriousness

Saturn is the most feared planet in astrology. He is less brutal than Mars, less hidden than Pluto, less insidious than Neptune, and far less unpredictable than Uranus. His implacable nature never goes unnoticed, and his influence is expressed in-depth, as time goes by. He modifies your scale of values, and moulds your identity as he crushes the trivial or artificial features unsuitable for your true personality.

No negotiation is possible with Saturn because he is the master of time. Try to avoid him, and you can be sure that he will get back to you later with the same old issues which you did not want to solve, usually with high interest rates. Saturn symbolises the share of seriousness you have in you, along with the share of vulnerability and the profundity in which you can safely dive, even though this simple evocation automatically frightens you.

Saturn's reputation is not too nice. In mythology, Saturn is referred to as Kronos, the god of time who dethroned and castrated his own father Uranus. He was very scared of losing power, and because he distrusted his own children, he swallowed them as soon as his wife Rhea gave birth to them. To escape such a baleful fate, she wrapped a blanket around a stone, so that Kronos mistakes it for Jupiter, their youngest son. Later, Jupiter did dethrone Kronos and made him throw up his siblings, among whom were Neptune and Pluto.

The place where Saturn is posited indicates the area in which you feel restraint and inhibition, some sort of obligation to partly renounce, or some challenge to be met. A fair share of your energy is devoted to this, and, based on your experience, you must learn how to successfully face the challenge.

If you are able to master Saturn in our natal chart, and if you dare to confront him even though he is afflicted, you earn the right to turn time into your ally. Only good wines age well. If you stand back and look at people around you, you easily see that time does not affect everybody in similar ways. Some people achieve wisdom, flexibility, and above all, kindness and compassion. Some other self-centred people definitely crystallise their vulnerability and limit their perception of the world to their earthly identity only. They forget that no action can be achieved without love and selflessness, and that growth implies that essential issues must be addressed, and if possible tackled, with determination. "For God's sake! What's the purpose of my life? What the hell am I doing here... What to do with my time?" And especially, "Who am I? What is the meaning of the ‘I' so often uttered without pondering over its real meaning?". Such recriminations may be heard when Saturn frowns.

Louis Pasteur is a good illustration of the Saturnian archetype, a person focused on hard work and long-term goals, a tireless and obstinate researcher, introverted but aware of his worth. Saturn is the friend of time provided that we are willing to clear-sightedly integrate him into our natal chart. Saturn is the one who is able to structure our personality and turn our bad and good experiences into an invaluable source of riches. Without Saturn, whatever we go through never becomes a factor of progress. Would it be only in view of earthly balance and in order to feel stronger and more self-confident, regardless of the spiritual plane, Saturn is unavoidable. This is why we must confront him with serenity and force, even though at first we all tend to shun our potential weaknesses.

Saturn symbolises your share of seriousness, your weakness, the area in which you must struggle in responsible ways and without cheating, and sometimes the debt linked to a few past events. On the other hand, Saturn also symbolises the lever which you can pull in order to turn time into your ally and your friend, and which enables you to grow each day richer in terms of wisdom and open-mindedness.

In astrology, as always with planets, the position in sign indicates the colour which your seriousness takes on, whereas the position in house, much more important, points to the challenging area of life. The aspects to Saturn indicate the more of less difficult way you face it. If Saturn is in tense aspects with other planets, there is no reason why you should lose hope, on the contrary. It is most likely that you chose several ordeals matching your strength in order to grow more rapidly than other people.

A natal chart is never bad or good. No hierarchical classification can be established because there are as many criteria for judgement as there are possible destinies. You have the freedom to follow your path in all lucidity, and above all, to have confidence in your future.

In this article, we provide the meanings of this factor of seriousness in your natal chart. We first explain the position of Saturn in house, the most important one, and then, his position in sign.

In astrology, there are five personal planets, namely, the Sun, the Moon, Mercury, Venus, and Mars. For the other planets, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto, two elements are to be taken into account. The first one is that the meaning in sign is not very important. Indeed, they are slow-moving planets, and therefore, they are found in the same sign in the charts of people born in the same year, or several years apart in the case of Neptune or Pluto. The only case where these slow-moving planets have an important role is when they are linked by aspects to other personal factors of the chart. For these reasons, we deem it useless to elaborate on the explanations of slow-moving planets' position in sign.

By contrast, the meaning of their position in house is of major importance, although less marked than in the case of personal planets. The second important fact is that the influence of non-personal planets, more particularly trans-saturnian Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto, translate into EXTERNAL events. Unlike personal planets, which are somehow part of you and forge your destiny similarly to the carpet which takes on the shape of the ground on which it is unrolled (destiny unfolds according to what we are), non-personal planets seem to provoke events marked by some form of fatality or by a convergence of external influences which are beyond your control. The only thing we can do is simply to accept them.

You can instantly get the position of your Saturn in sign and in house. All you need to do is locate the red glyph of Saturn ((a cross with a leg on its right side) in the house area outside the zodiacal wheel. Then you can check the accurateness or the resemblance between your personality traits and the relevant text in the paragraphs below.

Saturn in House

Saturn in the 1st House

Solemnity, seriousness and discipline are your keywords. It is difficult for you to relax, and it is most likely that at the beginning of your life, you are shy, quite introspective, and distant. You may be worried even though you have no reasons to do so. Your doubts may be overwhelming to the extent that they affect your vitality.

As time goes by, thanks to your strong will, your serious side becomes an asset for your success. You learn spontaneity, risk-taking, and lightness, and you are less concerned with the image you project because, in your heart of hearts, there already are hindsight, solemnity, and some sort of wisdom!

Saturn in the 2nd House

Financial affairs, and more particularly, your earning capacity, constitute the challenges of your life. In this area, your practical sense is not too good and remains to be improved. This is the first thing you should work on in order to progress and to gain self-confidence.

You are distrustful and you spend too much time analysing before taking action by yourself; you must understand that, to be able to win, you must accept to lose, to take risks, and to give for the sake of giving. There is no other way out. As time goes by, you use your persistence to gain material security and to steady the flow of your income in order to overcome feelings of frustration.

Saturn in the 3rd House

Impersonal detachment or cold-looking demeanours may hamper your communications although they increase your concentration, your patience, and your ability to study and to accumulate knowledge. As far as your entourage is concerned, quality prevails over quantity, and you can easily alternate agitated and eventful periods with periods of solitude.

Your challenge is certainly to make an effort in order to be less demanding from people and to keep a minimal number of relations. Nobody is perfect, and neither are you! Pay attention to people's qualities and forget their flaws, for they should not prevent you from enjoying their company.

Saturn in the 4th House

You worry when you are at home, in private. You may feel, wrongly usually, that your family does not love you, that they do not understand you, that you are lonely, and that your father is too strict.

You are often attached to the past and to painful souvenirs. Your challenge is to understand that the present can become light and pleasant and that the burden of your sufferings comes from your own doubts and not from your family environment. If you succeed in doing so, you will win on all counts since, at the end of the day, you become responsible, stable and... happy at home!

Saturn in the 5th House

Because you are very serious and solemn, the realm of feelings, parties, leisure and childhood, as well as topics related to trivial and charming things, are unknown to you. Profundity and wisdom are invaluable qualities in many life areas. However, in the field of entertainments and pleasure, it is undoubtedly necessary to let animality and spontaneity be freely expressed.

Your challenge is to sometimes forget your cautiousness, your intellect, and your wisdom. It seems unimportant, but it is your whole approach to life that is to be reviewed and... altered. Keep what is already yours – deep feelings, loyalty, sense of responsibilities – but relax totally. The only possible danger is to garner moments of pleasure. And they are indispensable!

Saturn in the 6th House

The association of the astrological house of effort with the planet symbolising concentration and the necessity to overcome one's fears is not negative in itself. In your daily life and in your work, more than anyone else, you are dependent on your courage and your persistence.

The danger is that you underestimate yourself psychologically, or that you give up a task just because you think that you cannot live up to people's expectations. Your challenge is to gain self-confidence and wisdom and to pursue your effort because in the long run, they will be rewarded.

Saturn in the 7th House

You have a natural reluctance to grant your trust. As a consequence, associations, union, and sharing with others are difficult for you. On the bright side, you are endowed with caution and wisdom.

You ought to tone down this attitude because it may turn against you in the long run. You may marry late or with a person much older than you. This does not imply unhappiness! It is in your interest to open up to others, although it is hard for you to do so. At the end of the day, your harvest benefits your destiny and your evolution alike.

Saturn in the 8th House

Sooner or later, death and its environment – inheritances, successions, investments, sorrows, or detachment – are areas you will have to deal with, not necessarily in a negative way. Besides, the Tradition believes that this configuration gives longevity, if other aspects do not strongly state otherwise.

In the affective and sexual spheres, you do not easily grant your confidence, and you need to work on your inhibitions so as to overcome your own fears. Provided you display a strong will, Saturn, as the planet of time, allows you to consider these areas with grace. They become sources of pleasure and joy, under the condition that... you put aside your serious side, precisely. This is likely to occur after your first experiences have taken place.

Saturn in the 9th House

Despite what you may say, you perceive all things foreign or remote as worrisome, and during the first part of your life, you do not travel, or you do not enjoy travelling. Your sober, sometimes conformist concepts of things and persons can hardly reconcile with the spirit of adventure, or with amazing and unknown events linked to foreign matters, both literally and figuratively.

With time, you become more and more interested in what you do not know, and you often use your natural rigour and seriousness to gain higher knowledge in the fields of moral, philosophy, religion, or politics. During the second part of your life, your reluctance for long-distance trips may turn into a thirst for discoveries and an unbridled freedom to bite, at long last, into the fruit that used to seem so dreadful to you.

Saturn in the 10th House

Your responsibilities constantly increase, slowly, but steadily, as years go by. Your acute sense of duty, your good management of time, your long-term vision, and your moral rigour are the qualities which contribute to your inexorable rise to power with, deep down, odd feelings of anxiety.

With your definite taste for power or for success, you work your way up the top place. But the danger to fall is strong. You need as much persistence to reach the heights of your career as to... remain there! Many Heads of State have this configuration, at the same time beneficial and a source of potential disappointments if too much importance and energy are dedicated to it. Indeed, climbing to the top should be only one facet of life.

Saturn in the 11th House

As soon as you become a member of a community, and when you are surrounded with people or with friends, you instinctively protect yourself, and you even hide. There is nothing you can do against this. In public, you do not show your real face, but in friendship, you are loyal and reliable.

You prefer quality to quantity, and your friends have every reason to be happy that they won your confidence because they know that they can rely on you under all circumstances. Your friends are usually much older and more seasoned than you.

Saturn in the 12th House

The combination of the house of ordeals and sacrifices with the planet of renunciation may seem awkward at first. However, it may help you assert yourself when you are facing painful circumstances, or when destiny's strikes bring about periods of isolation.

If your generosity of spirit and your will are up to the stake – your quick and intense evolution - you may take advantage of this promising but difficult configuration. Then, you become stronger, more lucid, and more dedicated than ever.
