Understanding Astrological Compatibility

This series of articles explores the principles used to assess affinities between two partners from their natal charts. It is important to distinguish between falling in love and feeling comfortable together over time.

In our view, comparing two charts does not fully answer the first question, which also depends on timing. A natal chart is continuously activated by cycles and forecasting techniques such as transits, progressions, and the solar return. Each partner may therefore be going through a period that is favorable to meeting someone, or not. For the magic of love at first sight to occur, both people must also be available at the same time.

Comparing two charts can, however, provide a more static assessment of the relationship by highlighting affinities, complementarities, and potential challenges. Synastry, the comparison of two natal charts, is particularly useful for this purpose.

When a favorable period coincides with strong affinities, the chances of a harmonious encounter are naturally greater. The ideal sought must also be taken into account: depending on individual sensitivity, someone different from oneself may sometimes prove more stimulating than a theoretically very compatible partner.

Finally, we offer a basic overview of compatibility for each of the twelve zodiac signs. It should remain a general guide, since a natal chart cannot be reduced to the Sun sign or the Ascendant alone, but must be considered as a whole.
