The Sun in conjunction with the Moon

Astrological aspects: general introduction

The analysis of a natal chart must be as comprehensive as possible. This is what we do as we make our personalized reports available in our e-shop. It must be borne in mind that many astrologers concentrate on the interpretation of planets in signs and in houses, and of angles, without paying enough attention to aspects. On the contrary, we believe that when aspects involve personal planets between themselves or slow-moving planets, they are of fundamental importance. In all cases, they are at least as significant as the Ascendant or the Sun. This is particularly relevant when the orb is tight (i.e. when the aspect is exact). This is the criterion we apply for this new series of articles which describe how well-known personalities experience certain aspects.

The Sun in conjunction with the Moon

As we address the Sun-Moon conjunction, it is necessary to constantly bear in mind that this is a major aspect. Both are luminaries, a word that classical astrology uses for the two celestial bodies included with the planets, but luminaries have a higher status. The Sun, the Moon, and the Ascendant are the most important features for the interpretation of the sky map.

The Sun is the provider of our vital energy and of our will. He is associated with our masculine part, the yang. He speaks volumes about the way we claim our identity, as well as our outer self-assertiveness and our leadership capacity.

The Moon is related to the feminine principle, the yin; she is linked to our inner world, our sensitivity, and our emotions. She also describes our spontaneity when facing events, on an instinctive level.

When the Sun and the Moon are in conjunction, it means that our lifestyle and the way we express the two facets of our personality cannot be considered separately.

By extension, in the family and during childhood, this configuration indicates that, as one grows up, one finds it difficult to make the difference between what pertains to the father's role, and what pertains more to the mother's traditional role. In the best-case scenario, one creates an image of both parents as a tight-knit couple resembling the ideal one. This may either match fairly well the reality of the situation, or it may be some sort of fantasy that is kept bottled up.

In some other cases, once an adult, the person unconsciously confuses what is feminine and what is masculine, i.e. the protective mother and the father exercising authority. One finds it hard to gain autonomy and to make the correct choice between these two attitudes.

One is generally deeply self-centered. The fact to start living as a couple proves quite thorny to experience in concrete life, because if the Sun prevails, the desire to live together comes up against too many high demands. On the contrary, if the Moon gets the upper hand - which depends mainly on the sign in which the conjunction is posited, as well as on the aspects received – the almost exaggerated attachment to the mother brings about a certain lack of maturity and stability.

Anyway, this conjunction, which is the equivalent to a new Moon, highlights the zodiacal sign in which the luminaries are posited; most often, the said sign becomes dominant. Sometimes, the Sun and the Moon are in different signs, (one is at the end of a sign, while the other is at the beginning of the next sign), which slightly modifies the analysis.

Lastly, it must be remembered that when dealing with conjunctions, the blend always works for better or for worse according to the aspects the luminaries receive.

For instance, when transiting slow-moving planets activate the conjunction, there may be excessive assertion or undue sensitivity, with positive or detrimental results.

At best, for those having this configuration, willpower, imagination, and sensitivity mingle together to bring about their fair share of satisfaction. At worst, they trigger periods of doubt, of hesitation, of instability, and of loss of usual landmarks.

In order to better explain this aspect, we are mentioning several well-known personalities, here Marlon Brando, French novelist Colette, Harrison Ford, and Princess Stephanie of Monaco. This article deliberately isolates the conjunction so as to better describe it. For this reason, it claims on no account to be a psychological analysis of the celebrity in question, for whom many other articles are available in the "Focus" section.

It is possible to find thousands of other horoscopes having the Sun and the Moon in conjunction (or other aspects), with the online tool search. The planets, positions in sign and in house as well as the orb, are configurable.

Marlon Brando

The comedian, already a real myth in his lifetime, has a Sun-Moon conjunction which catches the eye of astrologers. It is in Aries, in the 4th House, that of family roots.

In the first zodiacal sign, the most virile of all signs, the Sun may tend to smother the Moon. Therefore, logically, from an early age, Marlon Brando went through strong emotions which probably made him feel ill at ease.

We know that his family life was not smooth; his father was absent, and his mother had thrown in the towel because she was an alcoholic. Brando, a personage who had become a great star and enchanted the public, succeeded all by himself. He became his own symbolic mother and father.

This planetary pair is mainly under the leadership of Mars, ruler of the sign, who is in exaltation in Capricorn. Since this is a tense aspect, Brando had to build up a carapace of toughness to overcome what he considered to be a weakness. The problem is all the more acute that Pluto in the 8th House (ordeals and ensuing crises and metamorphoses) forms an additional challenging aspect which leads to very destructive tendencies.

Fortunately, because his natal chart is very complex, Brando was able to counterbalance this forecast thanks to other assets of his natal chart.

If we focus on the conjunction, we observe that it is involved in a nice Fire Grand Trine, a pattern linking Jupiter in Sagittarius in the 1st House with Neptune in Leo in the 9th House.

Despite the darkness of his initial state, Brando has always sought some level of grandeur. Perhaps, this facet of his personality showed through cinema screens, and inspired generations of movie-lovers, who still revere him such a long time after his death.

Colette

The case of the French author Colette is particularly interesting owing to the fact that in her chart, the conjunction functions as a catalyst of all the specific traits of the nature of Aquarius.

The literary recognition she enjoyed enabled her to publicly support causes which in those days were very modern, such as feminism, and an assumed and even demanded bisexuality.

A person having a Sun-Moon conjunction in a radical sign like Aquarius could only end up choosing a lifestyle which is the exact opposite of that of the conservative middle-class.

Yet, Colette was born in a family in which she grew up as the subject of her mother's adoration. Her mother, whose name was Sido, was quite representative of the behavior associating the yin and the yang. She seemed to be the dominant member of the household. Jules-Joseph Colette, the father, was a war hero who returned home weakened and amputated after a battle in Italy. As for the mother, she enjoyed living lavishly, which led the family to the ruin and compelled them to part with Colette's natal house.

In the natal chart of the author, the Sun and the Moon are in opposition with the ruler of Aquarius, Uranus, who often indicates sudden reversals of fortune. The tensions affecting the Sun-Moon duet also point to an entangled or even hectic love life, on which her novels were based, given the cerebral nature of Aquarius.

Colette divorced twice and did not hesitate to carry on openly with women as well with many men. She also had an affair with a very young man, and she immortalized it in 1923 in one of her best-selling novels, The Ripening Seed.

Harrison Ford

Here is a natal chart worth analyzing after having delineated that of Marlon Brando. Indeed, Harrison Ford also has the famous conjunction, but in Cancer, i.e. on the Moon's territory. Therefore, the case of Ford is entirely different, because the Moon makes herself comfortable, while the Sun is dimmer.

Nurturing and fertile values are considered more important than individual assertion and ambition. Although his career is successful far beyond what the majority of top-ranking actors hoped for, Ford himself gives the impression that he is slightly surprised by his achievements.

Although he has reached the age of 79, he keeps an almost eternally childlike side, at the same time grumpy and charming.

In his chart, both luminaries are in the 10th House, an important House representing the career. The duet is in sextile with Neptune, which strengthens Ford's imagination and his desire to escape from the harsh reality.

Throughout his career, his approach was much more to wait for good opportunities instead of looking for them. Actually, he acknowledges that he has benefited from incredible strokes of luck. He believes that the main purpose of his profession is to help and entertain his audience.

Regarding his private life, he has been married three times. Although he separated from his first two wives, he still keeps on protecting them. He is now living with Calista Flockhart, with whom he seems to experience a symbiotic marriage.

Princess Stéphanie of Monaco

Princess Stéphanie of Monaco / Author : Roland Gerrits / Anefo - November 1986 / CC BY-SA (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0)

Princess Stéphanie of Monaco is the youngest child of the couple formed by the unforgettable Grace Kelly and Rainier II, Prince of Monaco. Stéphanie is another interesting and "sporty" example of the Sun-Moon conjunction in a natal chart. Both luminaries are involved in a Grand Square linking the fixed signs. Indeed, the Sun and the Moon in Aquarius are in opposition with the Ascendant in Leo, in square with Jupiter in Taurus on the Midheaven, and in square with Neptune on the Imum Coeli.

The interpretation of this pattern is crystal clear. Nothing in the chart seems to suggest any sort of institutional role and its procession of the duties that she can hardly cope with.

From a young age, Stef de Monac (her nickname) took malicious pleasure in provoking her family in every possible way. It must be underlined that, since the Sun-Moon pair is in the 6th House, Stéphanie tends to adopt a lifestyle unhindered by constraints.

After a foray into the world of fashion, she tried her hand at singing. Irresistible, the title of her song, matches the personality of Stéphanie. During the spring of 1986, the rock princess could be seen everywhere, her androgynous figure calling the tune.

This was followed by a very turbulent period, with numerous and widely publicized short-lived relationships interspersed with successive infidelities.

In short, the Sun-Moon conjunction illustrates perfectly the confusion between feminine and masculine principles, probably reinforced by the high status of the parents. As time goes by, the favorite of her father will end up calming down, and will achieve serenity as she leaves the principality.
