Mars and Pluto in Dynamic Aspect

Astrological aspects: general introduction

The analysis of a natal chart must be as comprehensive as possible. This is what we do as we make our personalized reports available in our e-shop. It must be borne in mind that many astrologers concentrate on the interpretation of planets in signs and in houses, and of angles, without paying enough attention to aspects. On the contrary, we believe that when aspects involve personal planets between themselves or slow-moving planets, they are of fundamental importance. In all cases, they are at least as significant as the Ascendant or the Sun. This is particularly relevant when the orb is tight (i.e. when the aspect is exact). This is the criterion we apply for this new series of articles which describe how well-known personalities experience certain aspects.

Mars and Pluto in challenging aspect

These planets with obvious affinities are synonymous with strength, courage, ardor, and thirst for power.

Mars is more "first degree" because he is the ruler of Aries, a sign which is the archetype of primality in the characterological meaning of the word. Mars gives a hot-headed temperament which prefers to take action immediately instead of thinking deeply beforehand.

A personal planet whose cycle lasts two years, Mars relates to sporting or military feats. He encourages enterprising spirit and provides energy, audacity, but sometimes brutality which may turn into violence too.

As for Pluto, he is a collective, faraway planet. His effects must be carefully examined because they usually impact on generations. A turn around the zodiac takes him 256 years; he is posited roughly at the same place in the chart of people born one or two years apart. This is the reason why astrologers consider mainly the aspects Pluto forms with fast-moving planets (personal planets) or with the angles of the chart. His position in sign or even in House has very little or no influence.

Symbolically, Pluto represents hidden and instinctive forces. Those having a mighty Pluto in their chart are thirsty for power, but they refrain from showing it. They prefer to work in silence, without being distracted from their goal. In the circumstances where Mars impatiently throws up his hands, Pluto manages to remain unrelenting, for better or for worse.

When these planets are linked by a dynamic aspect, the people concerned go through intense experiences which are as many challenges to take up. It cannot be denied that the whole configuration predisposes to a certain aggressiveness coming from oneself or from external events.

It may be caused by a demanding context, tug of war, or conflict, the detail of which can be found in the Houses activated by the aspect.

In a female chart, it is possible that Mars' energy, typically virile, symbolizes the male person who makes life difficult for her.

In a male chart, there may be problems of rivalry and reckless actions.

Furthermore, some specialists in astro-psychology believe that a tense aspect between Mars and Pluto indicates that the behavior may be marked by sadism when the aspect is very tight (an orb of less than 2 or 3 degrees) and when, simultaneously, there is no auspicious, therefore soothing, aspects formed with several other planets of the sky map.

Let us recall that both planets relate to sexuality, and sometimes to sadomasochism. In short, without scaring anyone, this aspect must be channelled so that it becomes an asset instead of an energy working against the chart's owner.

When the latter manages to do so, the Mars-Pluto aspect turns into a powerhouse which enables the chart's owner to overcome nearly any ordeal. Indeed, it is necessary to recall that all aspects considered negative or tense are driving forces helping to move further, to mature, and to gain a wiser, stronger, and more serene personality.

Provided it is under control or transcended, a negative aspect represents good luck in a chart, whereas a positive major aspect (trine or sextile), tends to bring about languor and the desire to rest on one's laurels, even though it seems pleasant and soothing.

In order to better explain this aspect, we are mentioning several well-known personalities, here Greta Garbo (opposition), Jake Gyllenhaal (square), Christina Aguilera (square) and Bruce Lee (square). This article deliberately isolates the aspect (a square or an opposition) so as to better describe them. For this reason, it claims on no account to be a psychological analysis of the celebrity in question, for whom many other articles are available in the "Focus" section.

It is possible to find thousands of other horoscopes having Mars in aspect of square or opposition with Pluto (or any other aspects), with the online tool search. The planets, positions in sign and in house as well as the orb, are configurable.

Greta Garbo

Mysterious and enigmatic, Greta Garbo has an unclassifiable personality. Of Swedish origin, and from a very modest background, the divine actress succeeded in becoming a great star in Hollywood, a real myth.

Pluto in Gemini in the 1st House gives Garbo's appearance an ambiguous and fascinating charm. In addition, his opposition with Mars in Sagittarius points to an international destiny.

It is interesting to note that it was Mauritz Stiller, her mentor, who negotiated on her behalf her first contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Meyer. In this case, it was as if she had actually entrusted someone with her convincing power which has proved effective, similarly to a mighty lever for relationship.

When Garbo started, it was still the silent film era, and she learnt to accentuate her acting and to fine-tune her expressiveness with the support of Pluto. In her chart, the Mars - Pluto aspect is on the communication axis (Gemini Sagittarius), a feature which enabled her to successfully go through the transition from silent to sound movies, although perhaps at the cost of huge efforts.

We also see the influence of this dynamic planetary duet in Garbo's predilection for melodrama. A manner to exorcize her dark desires?

Anyway, she has achieved posterity for having declared in confidence that "I would like to remain alone with myself. I feel the need to be reborn, like the phoenix rising from his ashes, to get rid of the opinion that I am nothing". It is doubtless that with such a duet being in charge, the diva lacked no assistance.

Jake Gyllenhaal

Let us move to the chart of the talented but much more optimistic Jake Gyllenhaal, a typically Sagittarius actor.

Nevertheless, he must contend with a powerful square formed by Pluto, at the end of Libra in the 3rd House (communication), and Mars in Capricorn in the 6th House (health, daily life).

Born to a family immersed in the cinema, he was noticed quite rapidly and could have aspired to all sorts of roles right from the beginning.

In addition to a penchant for films noirs and thrillers, it was his role as a homosexual cow-boy in Brokeback Mountain which caught the attention of the general public and earned him worldwide fame.

The film utilized perfectly well the universe of the Mars-Pluto aspect: violence, hidden or forbidden things, and sexuality.

In the area of health, we find the effects of this duet which urged Gyllenhaal to push his limits, for instance when he decided to lose some ten kilos for his role in Nightcrawler by Dan Gilroy in 2014.

He looked so emaciated that his numerous fans were worried. Fortunately, he has recovered since then.

Christina Aguilera

A precocious talent, when she was an adolescent, Christina Aguilera's career was launched by an influential record label. When she reached adulthood, she kept on working hard and even became one of the most powerful music stars.

To begin with, it must be noted that Mars in Capricorn highlights ambition and perseverance, in conflict with Pluto in Libra in the 8th House (ordeals, financial complications, sexuality).

This aspect may refer to her father, who has caused her many tribulations. He was a soldier, a revealing profession matching the nature of the planets involved. Aguilera and her mother used to say that both of them have been abused by him physically and emotionally.

A beginning singer, she found in music a way to exorcize her painful memories. It was precisely this past which explains her commitment to cooperate with a non-profit organization to support homeless women and children victims of abuse.

As we see it, Aguilera has been able to sublimate the challenge represented by the two planets as she used the force of Mars, active in the 11th House (network of associations, collective or humanitarian projects).

In conclusion, although she is experiencing a brilliant career and she has managed to run a tight ship, it is most likely that she had guts, perseverance and courage to overcome difficulties.

Bruce Lee

We are closing our short selection of samples illustrating this aspect with the chart of a famous personality whose affinity with this tough aspect is perhaps deeply revealing.

Bruce Lee was considered to be one of the greatest martial arts masters in his day. It must be said that in his natal chart, there was a critical planetary structure which included Pluto in square with Mars, the latter being in opposition with Jupiter and with Saturn.

It is impossible to overlook these two planets, because they are also in square with Pluto, who is therefore the apex planet. Since these explanations may be too technical, let us just remember that such a configuration produces by itself a considerable power. Should we add the nature of the planets involved, we would get a highly explosive combination.

Pluto is doubtlessly the one who pulls all the strings, since he is in the 8th House (a House having similar values as those of Pluto), while Mars is posited in the sign under his rulership (Scorpio).

Here, death or irreversible transformations are inescapable topics.

His biography confirms that as he was training, he has been severely injured, and that he underwent the consequences of the wound all his life. His death is believed to be the result of cerebral edema caused by a rare allergy to a painkiller. Lee entered the legend forever.

Nevertheless, his death remains mysterious, surrounded by hypotheses among which some theories imagine a settling of scores with the Chinese mafia. Here again, it is Pluto expanding his shadow beyond Lee's death.
