The Importance of Sagittarius
Even though Bruce Lee has passed away a long time ago, he remains a legend of martial arts. He is considered the greatest master of those disciplines as well as one of the best actors of a genre he imposed using only his charisma. Furthermore, he was instrumental in changing the way Westerners looked at Asians in the movies.
Nowadays, Lee is appreciated as an accomplished artist, a major figure in the world of pop culture owing to his contributions as an actor but also as a director, a philosopher, and a founder of Jeet Kune Do, a specific form of martial art. He fully deserves an article, because his natal chart and his life are particularly interesting to analyse.
Indeed, the chart of this American-Chinese star is both radical and quite simple to interpret, for it is straightforward. We shall start with Sagittarius, the sign tenanted by both the Sun and the Ascendant.
Since they form a tight conjunction, it is obvious that the luminary and the 9th sign are important. In analogy and therefore in connection with foreign matters, the world at large, and higher education, the typical and pure Sagittarius is entrusted with the mission to explore these fields.
Lee was born in San Francisco's Chinatown in 1940. His father, a star of the Opera of Guangdong, certainly passed on to him the taste for the entertainment industry's occupations. Besides, when he was still a child, he was given the opportunity to appear in some of his father's films in China.
Simultaneously, he was initiated into Tai-Chi-Chuan (or Tai-Chi) around the age of 13 before he returned to the States, mainly due to passport issues. To channel his energy and to give him a good training, his parents decided that he would pursue his higher studies in Seattle then in Washington.
Sagittarian traits are noticeable in these beginnings: faraway travels and university curriculum. Lee probably enjoyed immersing himself in the existential questions of his philosophy classes, since they influenced his life afterwards. He never forgot to practice some sort of wisdom and to keep his distance from martial arts.
He possessed to a high degree the main attributes of Sagittarius, i.e. an animal body and a human head. He is known for such physical qualities as dazzling speed, strength, dexterity and suppleness. It must be noted that he constantly strove to improve himself. Jeet Kune Do for example is a martial art based on Kung-Fu that he developed by adding body-building.
The Vitality of the Sun-ascendant Conjunction
The Sun-Ascendant conjunction is well-supported by a trine from Pluto. This aspect is particularly interesting because the sign of Scorpio is also very highlighted by the influence of four fast-moving planets, namely Venus, Mars, the Moon, and Mercury.
Whenever the Sun – willpower, vitality, charisma – tightly conjuncts the Ascendant – vitality again, physical energy, instinct – his characteristics are increased. The same holds true for conjunctions with the four angles, and especially with the Ascendant.
Most of the time, people having a Sun-Ascendant conjunction are extremely noticeable. Thus, when they enter a room, they look radiant, catch everyone's eye and command respect without having to say a single word. This configuration is among leaders and certain actors' main assets. The effect is even more visible with extroverted signs such as Sagittarius.
Getting back to Bruce Lee, such a conjunction in a Fire sign accounts for his extraordinary energy. It is reinforced by Pluto in Leo, who also produces indomitable might.
Dominant Scorpio, T-square, and Extremism
Lee's survival instinct, proper to the nature of Pluto and of the 8th sign, is deep and potent. Lee can rely on the regenerative capacity and the magnetism of his Pluto-Sun tie. However, it must be borne in mind that the planet is the apex of a T-square which connects almost all the other planets: the Venus-Mars-Moon trio in Scorpio (Mercury is further down in the sign, therefore not considered), and is opposite the Jupiter - Saturn generational conjunction in early Taurus.
In all, the T-Square links up six planets in Fixed signs (Scorpio, Leo, Taurus). Although this planetary pattern helps stabilise Sagittarius' mutable tendencies, it also increases its rigid behaviour. As one knows, T-Squares in Fixed signs are tricky to deal with, for the ensuing tensions are hard to dispel since the person has difficulties evolving and changing his habits during severe crises.
Lee's life has proved it. He experienced the highest summits of success, and he died from a brain oedema at only 32. Looking at the pattern associating several planets, it must be emphasised that the natal Moon in Scorpio rules the 8th House, symbol of the end of things and therefore of death, which deepens the action of Pluto. This might be an indication that Lee was not meant to become a centenarian, even though in terms of forecasting, death is very difficult, if not impossible, to predict, which is in fact an excellent thing.
The Energy of Mars, for Better or for Worse
Lee's tragic end can also be explained by the partile Mars-Pluto square in the 8th House in the natal chart, although, as already mentioned, the most significant aspects do not always result in what is expected. Indeed, the stars incline but do not compel. Astrology points to possible paths and probabilities only.
Partile squares do not cancel the qualities of the planets involved. Thus, the might of Mars (dignified in Scorpio) blends with the indomitable and secretive determination of Pluto to endow Lee with the exceptional physical and psychological talents he displays in his movies. However, this square had the potential to push Lee too far, for instance by prompting him to take excessive risks.
Mars opposes Saturn and Jupiter. Here again, despite this tough aspect, the planets put in common their traits, sometimes with restraint in the present case, but not always. It is most likely that Lee underwent periods of fatigue and discouragement. Nonetheless, Jupiter's exaggeration and Saturn's constancy certainly turned Mars' energy into a quality seldom found elsewhere.
Planetary Transits on the Day of Lee's Death
On the evening of his death, on 20 July 1973, in Hong Kong, Jupiter, ruler of the chart, was squaring his natal position and Saturn. Saturn was squaring Neptune. Neptune was conjunct the natal Sun near the Ascendant. There was nothing really determining regarding the cause of death.
Nevertheless, symbolic directions brought the natal Pluto-Mars square exactly on the Ascendant – health – which is mind-shattering, while on the contrary, secondary directions indicate nothing significant.
In the chart of the solar revolution of 27 November 1972, prior to the death, there is a Mars-Venus conjunction which replicates the square formed with natal Pluto. Moreover, the Ascendant of the solar revolution chart is the same as the Ascendant of the natal chart. This phenomenon indicates that the period is crucial, since in addition, transiting Neptune conjuncts the natal Sun. The most troubling feature is that, in the solar revolution chart, the exact Uranus-Mars opposition – with an orb of less than 36 minutes – forms a T-Square with Venus, Mars being in Aries (the head), an omen stronger than anything else, the Uranus-Mars aspect being well-known for bringing about accidents and brutality.
Lightning Bolt and Freedom
Lastly, although Mercury forms no square in the natal chart (the orb is too wide), he opposes three slow-moving planets in the middle of Scorpio. Mercury is in tough aspect with Saturn and Jupiter but also Uranus, synonymous with lightning bolt and revolt. Lee was probably able to control these indomitable features thanks to martial arts and the cinema.
In summary, he was certainly a free thinker and a pioneer. This is suggested by his strong Sagittarius and his highlighted 11th House, in which three personal planets are posited.
Therefore, it is not surprising that he paved the way for those he inspired and will continue to inspire. His unique solar charisma accounts for the enthusiasm of the public and of his numerous fans. They will worship his films for ever.
