Mercury and Neptune in favorable aspect

Astrological aspects: general introduction

The analysis of a natal chart must be as comprehensive as possible. This is what we do as we make our personalized reports available in our e-shop. It must be borne in mind that many astrologers concentrate on the interpretation of planets in signs and in houses, and of angles, without paying enough attention to aspects. On the contrary, we believe that when aspects involve personal planets between themselves or slow-moving planets, they are of fundamental importance. In all cases, they are at least as significant as the Ascendant or the Sun. This is particularly relevant when the orb is tight (i.e. when the aspect is exact). This is the criterion we apply for this new series of articles which describe how well-known personalities experience certain aspects.

Mercury and Neptune in harmonious aspect

It is very interesting to analyze this aspect, because it associates two planets having an entirely different function. Mercury is a personal planet which rules exchanges, spontaneous thoughts, and communication.

It involves our intellect and our capacity to reason rapidly, contrary for example to Saturn, who handles the deepness of reflection. Mercury describes our propensity to evaluate, discriminate, or classify items or people, and to explain our thoughts to others, in writing or verbally.

Never very far from the Sun, Mercury mainly determines how we express ourselves with words. He deals with our eloquence and the quality of our texts. He also deals with our moves, and therefore by extension, our trips and our more or less great skill, particularly in trade, but sometimes in manual work too.

The House in which Mercury is posited indicates the areas of life which interest us, and on which we wish to share our viewpoints, or simply, topics we feel comfortable with, easily adaptable to circumstances.

As for Neptune, he enjoys remaining mysterious. He is associated with sensitivity, intuition, daydreaming, fondness for the supernatural, in an almost naive and irresistible way. When it is considered alone, this trans-saturnian body involves collective trends rather than characters, because it moves very slowly; the persons born several months apart have Neptune at the same place in their sky map. For this reason, he affects people's life only when he is linked to other natal planets or angles of the chart (Ascendant and Midheaven).

He rules the sign of Pisces, which points to universal matters. Indeed, Neptune would like to prompt all of us to converge on the same direction, to merge with the world, although he encourages us in a mode which remains vague, as if all we needed to do was to go with the flow, or to give ourselves to it. The planet is often found in the charts of artists or of mystics.

When they get along well, Mercury and Neptune enable us to synthesize sense of reality and intuition.

Innate curiosity, associated with vivid imagination, allows those who have an auspicious conjunction, a sextile, or a trine between Mercury and Neptune, to become deeply humane, creative, and efficient at the same time.

Their alliance brings about a fanciful, sensitive, and sometimes very lucky temperament. People with such a positive aspect may become masters in the art of communicating their emotions in all their hues, while bearing in mind the achievement of a tangible result.

They are not disconcerted by complicated or unclear situations, as well as by unspoken things, quite the contrary. Their intuition, added to their reflection, works wonders, even though depending on the situation and the respective strength of both planets in the chart, either logical thinking or insight gets the upper hand over the other mode of functioning.

In order to better explain this aspect, we are mentioning several well-known personalities (here Ernest Hemingway, Steven Spielberg, Victor Hugo, and Nicole Kidman). This article deliberately isolates the aspects so as to better describe them. For this reason, it claims on no account to be a psychological analysis of the celebrity in question, for whom many other articles are available in the "Focus" section.

It is possible to find thousands of other horoscopes having Mercury and Neptune in favorable aspect (or any other aspects), with the online tool search. The planets, positions in sign and in house as well as the orb, are configurable.

Ernest Hemingway

Ernest Hemingway was awarded the Nobel Prize for his entire body of work and achieved worldwide fame in his lifetime. He tried his hand at various genres, first as a war correspondent, trying to be as close to reality as possible (Mercury's quest), and at the same time, adopting the romantic posture of the writer who observes things subjectively and sensitively (neptunian perception). His heroes had the same personality characteristics as himself.

In his chart, Mercury is very powerful, even though he is found in the 12th House, "hidden" so to speak, and not in an angle.

The planet has many aspects, and rules roughly all the features (we deliberately do not mention the other aspects, because they are less precise anyway).

Mercury rules the Midheaven in Gemini, in which Neptune is posited (in conjunction with Pluto), with whom he is connected. This Mercury-Neptune association (Pluto is too far away and is not part of this configuration) emphasizes Hemingway's writing style which moves a wide audience, and apparently flows effortlessly.

His best-known novel, The Old Man and the Sea, which tells the story of a fisherman fighting a huge marlin far out in the Gulf Stream, touched the readers.

His admirers consider that this was a masterful illustration of the essence of human greatness faced with the power of nature.

It should be added that Hemingway was very fond of game fishing. He fell in love with Cuba, where he settled down. The sea was a source of total inspiration, which is very Neptunian.

Steven Spielberg

It is obvious that Steven Spielberg, a genius director, needs to think big, despite a modest Ascendant in Cancer. He was born with the Sun in Sagittarius, the sign in which Mercury is also found. This position denotes an open mind interested in all sorts of cultures and of influences, and fond of adventures, at least in the intellectual area.

Although the planet is not highlighted in the chart, it forms an interesting sextile with Neptune in Libra. The connection between these two planets probably contributed to turn the film Jaws into a tidal wave at the box office. This put Spielberg into orbit, quite early in his career, even though five years earlier, his film Duel was acclaimed by the public but also by critics.

The story is about a large man-eating white shark attacking swimmers in a beach resort of the East Coast of the United States. Once again, the atmosphere is very neptunian, bearing in mind that the sequels based on Jaws, as well as the receipts, seem to be related to Mercury, the planet ruling trade and tourism. This must not be forgotten.

On a completely different note, Spielberg was keen on the topic of origins, vague or muddled, in his long filmography: E.T., the Extra-Terrestrial, for instance, resonates well with Neptune in the 4th House. Science-fiction is one of his favorite genres which results from the blend of Neptune and the sign of Sagittarius.

Lastly, his quest for justice and balance (Neptune in Libra supported by Mercury) is felt in many of his films, Lincoln and Pentagon Papers, just to mention two relatively recent examples.

Victor Hugo

When they took the baccalaureate exam, all those who had a hard time giving a paper on a text by Victor Hugo remember at least two striking facts: Hugo has been extremely prolific, and his style is a good example of the romantic artist.

He mainly passed on to posterity thick novels such as the Bible, and lovely poems. In the natal chart, Water values are prevailing, especially through the sign of Pisces, in which the natal Sun is posited.

There is also Mercury in Pisces in the 5th House, in trine with Neptune in Scorpio and in the 1st House. The portrait is quite easy to decipher. Hugo had a passion for language, and a very fertile imagination, which is typical of his Sun sign, but also matching the aspect we are dealing with, i.e. the Mercury-Neptune auspicious link.

Therefore, it is not surprising that Hugo's work is multifaceted (fiction, theater, drawings, watercolors, photography).

Neptune's characteristics are clearly perceptible, whether through extreme sensitivity, or unlimited expression of feelings.

It is necessary to mention Hugo's political career as well as his need to stand up for just causes. He put his Mercurian eloquence at the service of the most destitute people, and he showed great compassion in the majority of his works.

Incidentally, we could assume that Mercury in the 5th House (children) and in Pisces (multiplicity) in trine with Neptune (no limitations) refers to the man who had five children with Adèle Foucher, his childhood friend and wife.

Nicole Kidman

Nicole Kidman / Author : Georges Biard 05-2017 / CC BY-SA (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0)

Although her beauty and her acting skills are widely acknowledged, Nicole Kidman mainly comes across as a great intellectual person. This can be felt through the roles she portrayed and in the films she chose.

This is why it is not surprising that Mercury is prominent, because the Sun is in Gemini, a sign ruled by Mercury.

He forms a very nice trine with Neptune in Scorpion in the 1st House. We see that like Steven Spielberg, this unmissable movie star has the planet of inspiration in the deep, tormented, and mysterious 8th zodiacal sign.

These character traits can be observed in Eyes Wide Shut by Stanley Kubrick, or The Others by Alejandro Amenábar, just to mention two films among the nearly 30 films in which she starred, although she was not yet 55.

In Kidman's case, the Mercury-Uranus sextile must not be overlooked, and particularly, the sextile with Pluto, ruler of Neptune. Kidman is endowed with a constant special psychological intensity which strengthens her intellectual abilities.
