The Moon and Mercury in favorable aspect

Astrological aspects: general introduction

The analysis of a natal chart must be as comprehensive as possible. This is what we do as we make our personalized reports available in our e-shop. It must be borne in mind that many astrologers concentrate on the interpretation of planets in signs and in houses, and of angles, without paying enough attention to aspects. On the contrary, we believe that when aspects involve personal planets between themselves or slow-moving planets, they are of fundamental importance. In all cases, they are at least as significant as the Ascendant or the Sun. This is particularly relevant when the orb is tight (i.e. when the aspect is exact). This is the criterion we apply for this new series of articles which describe how well-known personalities experience certain aspects.

The Moon and Mercury in harmonious aspect

The Moon and Mercury are two planets having at the same time a lot and little in common. Beginning with what links them, it is necessary to mention their swiftness – astronomically speaking – and the features of their symbolism.

The Moon switches signs every two and a half days. She is said to be changeable. She relates concretely to our daily mood and to our temperament.

As for Mercury, he requires slightly more time than the Moon to go through the zodiac. Nevertheless, he remains very fast and is among the personal planets near the Sun. Mercury gives quick-wittedness and dexterity in particular. Owing to his three annual retrogradations, the time he takes to cross a sign varies between 15 and 70 days.

As we are aware, the more rapid a planet is, the more personal it is. (A planet changing its zodiacal position very slowly necessarily affects a large number of people, and the interpretation of its position in a sign is less individualized.) This is why the Moon and Mercury are particularly important, just like the Sun, Venus, Mars, and of course the Ascendant.

The Moon, a Water planet, describes emotions. One laughs, cries, sulks. One is overwhelmed by stirring feelings, even though one does not clearly understand what is occurring in oneself. The Moon is related to instinct, the unconscious, sensitivity, and imagination. She is inspiring and creates a bridge between dreams and reality.

She is passive. She does not act, but she reacts to stimulations depending on the sign she is in. She is impulsive and dazzling in Aries, sensual and insistent in Taurus, lively and mobile in Gemini, etc.

In contrast, Mercury is a rational planet and does not deal with emotions. He rules mental matters, namely, the intellect, communication, writings, reason, logic. He defines the style, provides agility, including manual deftness, and he gives the ability to analyse any situation with detachment and without qualms.

In passing, let us note that Mercury or any other planet cannot shape intelligence. It is the way one communicates and thinks that is described, and not the intellectual quotient. The style is intuitive and swift with Aries, concrete and efficient with Taurus, curious and multi-talented with Gemini, etc.

When both planets are in harmonious aspect, it is natural to imagine that their cooperation will bring about an outgoing personality and a relaxed behavior. It is here the association of spontaneous emotions with efficient mind.

One appreciates change, one remains young, curious, lively and subtle. Memory is usually reliable, oral expression is good, and tolerance is constantly at work.

Sensitivity and logic work hand in hand. One has intuition, imagination, and is often a good orator or a talented author. One is able to remember old souvenirs and to transcribe or to share them. This is why this aspect is often found in the chart of poets, writers, some comedians or directors, and sometimes of singers or sculptors.

An auspicious Moon-Mercury combination indicates that one has more than one string to one's bow, and that skills may be of intellectual or manual nature.

In order to better explain this aspect, we are mentioning several well-known personalities (here Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (favorable conjunction), Nolwenn Leroy (trine), Charles Aznavour (trine), and Gwyneth Paltrow (trine)). This article deliberately isolates the aspects so as to better describe them. For this reason, it claims on no account to be a psychological analysis of the celebrity in question, for whom many other articles are available in the "Focus" section.

It is possible to find thousands of other horoscopes having the Moon and Mercury in favorable aspect (or any other aspects), with the online tool search. The planets, positions in sign and in house as well as the orb, are configurable.

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

Should it be necessary to find an extremely representative example for this aspect, it would probably be Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, a French author, poet, and traveler. He was born with the Sun in Cancer, a sign ruled by the Moon, and the Ascendant in Virgo, ruled by Mercury. Moreover, in his natal chart, these two planets are in a very tight conjunction in Leo in the 11th House.

At first sight, Saint-Exupéry's personality and physical appearance took after the Moon. He had a round face, and he was a dreamy child. He failed several competitive exams, for the Moon is not a planet interested in encouraging the sense of competitiveness.

Nevertheless, the army fulfilled his taste for movement. He joined the air force, an area in which he was responsible for delivering the mail by air. Here, he was in line with the role of Mercury.

Besides, this experience provided the substance for his first novels, Southern Mail and Night Flight. This latter book earned a prestigious prize and marked the beginning of his literary career.

His military feasts are not elaborated in this article, because they are not related with this aspect. The focus is placed on The Little Prince, a work written during WW II and illustrated with Saint-Exupéry's own watercolors. However, it was published posthumously, after his death in a plane crash.

The Moon-Mercury duet in Leo enabled this book to universally touch people's heart through the absurd allegory of human behaviors.

In Saint-Exupéry's chart, the conjunction is splendidly supported by a magnificent trine in Sagittarius sent by the Jupiter-Uranus duet (success and originality), and an exact sextile from Mars (concrete action) in conjunction with the Midheaven (destiny).

Nowadays, The Little Prince is translated into not less than 500 different languages and dialects – after the Bible and the Koran.

Nolwenn Leroy

An author, composer, and singer, Nolwenn Leroy became known when she won the second season of Star Academy, the most popular TV talent show in France in the early 2000.

The French singer and musician has an interesting quite tight trine formed by the Moon in Aquarius and Mercury in Libra. Therefore, the ethereal facet prevails and gives lightness and poise to the way she expresses herself.

This artist received a classical education. She managed to overcome at the same time a certain shyness and a few prejudices linked to her career which started with a TV show having high (too high?) audience ratings which was sometimes belittled.

Since then, she has been able to find her place and to retain a loyal public with her originality and her talent.

Although neither the Moon, nor Mercury are among the dominants of her natal chart, their common influence can be seen in Leroy's adaptability and creativity.

For instance, she gave a new momentum to her career by reviving her Breton roots. She celebrated them in an album where she sang in regional languages, including Breton and Irish Gaelic.

The joint action of the Moon and Mercury can also be found in Leroy's commitments. Indeed, both planets increase her all-rounder nature. especially in favour of causes dear to her heart.

Charles Aznavour

Charles Aznavour is another example of talented French artist whose chart has a harmonious link between the Moon and Mercury. However, in this case, both planets put the Earth element in the spotlight, since Mercury is in Taurus in the 3rd House (writings), while the Moon is in Capricorn in the 12th House (adversity).

He was of Armenian origins. He recorded his first songs in the forties. He died in 2018 and illustrates marvelously well the longevity of a sound and prolific career with 1,200 songs to his credit.

When he started, friends and people with whom he shared psychological affinities were extremely helpful. Édith Piaf took him under her wing. As her loyal accompanist, and spurred by curiosity, he seized the opportunity to learn.

However, he had to take his troubles patiently, because the critics did not spare the quality of Aznavour's voice which was not strong enough in their opinion.

He managed to bide his time, which is not surprising, since the Moon is in Capricorn in the 12th House.

It must be underlined that this luminary is in opposition with a passion conjunction formed by Venus and Pluto in Cancer in the 6th House. It is obvious that the singer and actor managed to deal with and to express the intense and deep-seated emotions connected to his Armenian background.

He always supported the Armenian diaspora, and successfully rose public awareness of the tragedy of Christian Kurdish communities persecuted in the Middle East.

Gwyneth Paltrow

Gwyneth Paltrow is an actress who has the Sun in Libra, and who is mindful of the image she gives in society. One of the assets of her natal chart is probably the auspicious link between the Moon in Gemini and Mercury in the solar sign in conjunction with the Sun.

It must be acknowledged that this successful comedian who became known in the nineties has turned into an unparalleled communicator.

She was able to grasp the spirit of the times and to reinvent herself at the right moment. Perfectly exact, the trine between the Moon and Mercury certainly explains why Paltrow is today almost better known as a style creator than as an actress.

Indeed, she is tremendously successful with Goop, her online platform focusing on wellness, followed by millions of internet users. Between two yoga lessons, Paltrow shares her vision of a lifestyle at the same time chic, unconventional, and bold.

In addition, she sells all sorts of trendiest items which are very sought after on her website. Natal Venus in Leo (elegance, luxury) in the 6th House (work, perseverance) accounts for this success.

It must also be noted that Mercury – the planet ruling trade and activities requiring communication skills – is in conjunction with Uranus, the planet of originality.

This combination enabled her to be an amazing performer in the movies in which she pretends to be a fragile lady, but she can as well show that she is a formidable businesswoman who pays no attention to criticisms.

t is doubtless that, strengthened by her astrological privileges, Paltrow will keep on amazing her numerous fans.
