Astrological aspects: general introduction
The analysis of a natal chart must be as comprehensive as possible. This is what we do as we make our personalized reports available in our e-shop. It must be borne in mind that many astrologers concentrate on the interpretation of planets in signs and in houses, and of angles, without paying enough attention to aspects. On the contrary, we believe that when aspects involve personal planets between themselves or slow-moving planets, they are of fundamental importance. In all cases, they are at least as significant as the Ascendant or the Sun. This is particularly relevant when the orb is tight (i.e. when the aspect is exact). This is the criterion we apply for this new series of articles which describe how well-known personalities experience certain aspects.
The Moon square Mars aspect
Today, we are focusing on the Moon - Mars in square in the natal chart. These planets are different in every respect; in addition, this aspect is divisive by nature, as we shall see in this article.
The interpretations that follow are applicable for the opposition, with the distinction that the effects will be inconsistent for this aspect, while the square acts in a more constant manner. Furthermore, the square, specifically for these two planets, is known to have more intense effects.
Let us start with the Moon, whose importance is considerable. With the Sun and the Ascendant, she is one of the three parameters which are most significant in the analysis of the horoscope.
However, her effects are probably less visible, since she is related to the inner world, to our emotions and our instinct.
Traditional astrologers give different interpretations depending on the gender. If the owner of the chart is a female, the Moon represents her own psychological structure in terms of receptivity and intuition. In the owner of the chart is a male, the Moon describes the type of woman he is drawn to and who may become his spouse later on, but also the mother firstly.
Mars refers to the will to take action, and to the energy spent to reach one's goals. The planet stimulates boldness and the desire to undertake. Boiling, explosive, Mars does not like to waste time pondering. He is uncomfortable with the world of feelings and of emotions, because he perceives them as weaknesses and useless delays.
Nevertheless, despite their obvious differences, the Moon and Mars have in common their primary side, their swiftness, and their disconnection from rationality. They are usually the cause of our most spontaneous reactions, over which our capacity to control is necessarily limited.
Now, if we look at the square aspect (a 90° angle), we note that the dynamics of the two planets lead to frequent quarrels or conflicts. Here, susceptibility is exacerbated, and the person concerned must fight his own demons while in his mind, he imagines most of the time that he is the victim of attacks which actually do not exist.
Rightly or wrongly, this inevitably brings about awkwardness, because one does not know how to gauge self-assertion and receptivity. In any case, one must learn to restrain oneself, especially at home with one's most fragile friends and relatives.
We cannot recommend strongly enough that those having this configuration in their chart think twice before taking action, but also before speaking.
In the field of health, there may be a few consequences on the parts of the body indicated by the signs where the Moon and Mars are posited, bearing in mind that the Moon, as well as the Ascendant and the Sun, indicate one's weaknesses or assets.
We must bear in mind that, notwithstanding the difficulties this aspect predisposes to, it gives forthrightness and spontaneity. Excess is mainly what must be fought. As the very realistic saying goes "One is always wrong to be right with too much force or insistence". We will add, especially if one is sure: the person needs to control himself/herself under all circumstances.
It often happens that one of the two planets gets the upper hand. If it is the Moon, one rapidly feels disconcerted in adversity or by the prospect of having to wage a battle. If Mars prevails, there may be a tendency to launch clumsy activities resulting in regrettable unpopularity.
Keywords associated with a Moon-Mars square may be as follows: impulsiveness, propensity to get carried away by emotions, verbal and sometimes physical violence, loss of control, unrestrained spontaneity, brutal frankness, aggressiveness stemming from a lack of analysis of the situation. These are only sheer tendencies and potentialities, which are balanced by the rest of the chart, particularly by the position in signs of the two planets and the aspects that the square receives, but also by the protections which may be somewhere else in terms of reserve and self-control.
These characteristics exist too, also but differently, for the family of dynamic Moon-Mars aspects, i.e. opposition, sesquisquare, quincunx, semi-square, and conjunction, if there is no safeguard elsewhere. Oppositions have rather strong saw-toothed like effects when transits activate the two planets involved; as for squares, the tendency is constantly there, whether followed by action or not. Quincunxes, which are special because they are the result of a sextile and a square, there is at the same time self-control but also propensity for getting carried away, both occurring sometimes simultaneously or with a time gap. The effects of conjunctions must be analyzed based on the rest of the configuration of the natal chart, but they can be very powerful. Minor aspects have the same meaning, although they are less intense.
In order to better explain this aspect, we are mentioning several well-known personalities. This article deliberately isolates the square aspect so as to better describe it. For this reason, it claims on no account to be a psychological analysis of the celebrity in question, for whom many other articles are available in the "Focus" section.

Keith Richards
The mythic guitar player and founding member of the Rolling Stones was born with the Moon in tight conjunction with the Midheaven, which reinforces the importance of his emotions in the field of career. Nevertheless, the Moon undergoes the square of Mars in Gemini and in the 7th House, but not in angle.
Uranus too is involved in the square with the Moon. However, his role here is mainly to increase the effect of Mars.
When Keith Richards published his biography, soberly entitled Life, he added a few subtleties to the self-destructive image he had been given for a long time. Thus, he wrote that reviewing his past brought up some of the most painful emotions. For instance, he remembered vexations at school, the baby he lost; "it is a wound which can never heal; it is hard to reopen it". All these personal confidences are proper to the dominant Moon, actually fragile but not publicly known. With such a Mars, hurtles come mainly from the other one, at least from Richards' viewpoint.
This aspect also points to the constant rivalry-friendship with his friend and partner Mick Jagger, whose Ascendant falls on Richards' Mars, precisely. Their synastry does not go unnoticed. Richard's Moon-Mars square is also felt through his series of sensational declarations, especially about many other famous musicians and artists.
Apparently, paying compliments is not his cup of tea. Perhaps it is the modest way he expresses his affection, who knows.

If Wikipedia starts the page dedicated to Nicolas Cage mentioning the actor's impulsive character, it is because this trait cannot be called into question.
Born with the Sun in Capricorn, Cage also has Mars in this sign, in which the planet of action is very comfortable. Mars enabled him to make a name for himself in eventful and suspense films where the stamina of the hero is a major asset.

We are closing this lively list with a sportsman, since the aspect is very relevant.
