Uranus and the Ascendant in Dynamic Aspect
Astrological aspects: general introduction
The analysis of a natal chart must be as comprehensive as possible. This is what we do as we make our personalized reports available in our e-shop. It must be borne in mind that many astrologers concentrate on the interpretation of planets in signs and in houses, and of angles, without paying enough attention to aspects. On the contrary, we believe that when aspects involve personal planets between themselves or slow-moving planets, they are of fundamental importance. In all cases, they are at least as significant as the Ascendant or the Sun. This is particularly relevant when the orb is tight (i.e. when the aspect is exact). This is the criterion we apply for this new series of articles which describe how well-known personalities experience certain aspects.
Uranus and the Ascendant in challenging aspect
This article deals with an aspect between a planet and an angle of the sky chart. Thus, it won't lean on the analysis of the combination of two energies, but of Uranus's impact on a sector representing a field of experience, here, for the Ascendant, the native's personality, such as the latter may wish – more or less consciously – to present to the world.
This concerns his appearance, his way of being, dressing, behaving, and interacting with others. We also find valuable indications on health, charisma, and vitality.
The Ascendant plays a major role in the analysis of the birth chart because it is very personal: it depends on the precise moment of birth and changes sign approximately every two hours.
It forms an axis with the Descendant, the 7th house, and opens the 1st house. Any planet being in close connection with the Ascendant makes a major impact because it provides a color and symbolism, which are added to the sign, where the Ascendant lies. Sometimes the compatibility is great, other times the combination is trickier to live with.
In this article, we shall describe the dynamic aspect between Uranus and the Ascendant, which means the square or the afflicted conjunction. In this regard, it is worth reminding that the opposition to one of the four angles is interpreted as a conjunction with the opposite angle and not as an opposition: it is not "negative" in itself. In other words, a planet conjunct with the Descendant or Imum Coeli is not malefic for the Ascendant or the Midheaven, in the absence of aspects of tension with other planets.
With Uranus, it is the surprise effect that enters the game, which can happen at any time of one's life, sometimes in a pleasant manner, but not necessarily for the best.
The native is likely to change his attitude or tastes without his entourage realizing what is going on. He can behave eccentrically, quit the game, rebel. This is especially true when transits activate Uranian energy. But it remains difficult to predict where the lightning shall strike.
Last but not least, sometimes the change comes from outside, without the native's knowledge. It is useless, moreover, to be scared about what could happen: it is impossible and fortunately, by using other positive energies, one can always overcome the problems caused by an aspect of a challenge.
Uranus in the Ascendant or in aspect of this angle triggers originality, sometimes marginality. In some cases, it creates a physical difference (very tall or small, remarkable strength, or skill, etc.), or relates personality (the subject is unpredictable, he reacts in an unexpected manner, he does not behave according to the traditional codes).
During a negative aspect like in this article, Uranus, due to an increasingly irresistible desire for freedom, creates a form of rebellion, of giving into rules and hierarchy.
In order to better explain this aspect, we are mentioning several well-known personalities, here James Dean (unfavorable conjunction), Angelina Jolie (square), Russell Brand (square), and Tina Turner (square). This article deliberately isolates the aspect (a square or an opposition) so as to better describe them. For this reason, it claims on no account to be a psychological analysis of the celebrity in question, for whom many other articles are available in the "Focus" section.
It is possible to find thousands of other horoscopes having Uranus in aspect of square or unfavorable conjunction with the Ascendant (or any other aspects), with the online tool search. The planets, positions in sign and in house as well as the orb, are configurable.
His dazzling fate turned him into someone iconic, James Dean is typically Uranian, with the planet falling exactly on his Ascendant in Aries. In his case, it should be noted that the latter governs his Sun sign, Aquarius, thus taking on even greater importance.
Uranus and the Ascendant are also at the heart of a T-square, a very energetic, demanding and rather exhausting composite aspect, which includes Saturn in Capricorn and in the 10th house (career, social destiny) and Jupiter in Cancer in sector 4 (family roots, home). Being in cardinal signs, the forces intensify the areas where each of them wants to assert themselves.
As a reminder, James Dean was born into a family where the mother took on Jupiter's warm role (he was very close to her), while the father, considered cold and distant, corresponded well to the Saturnian representation.
Unfortunately for him, the latter died when he was only 9 years old, and this was the first setback in this aspect. Following which, young James Dean asserted his independence – a typical Uranus requirement – and decided to become an actor.
We all know the outcome, namely, the phenomenal success of Rebel without a Cause. With East of Eden and Giant, James Dean would only have shot three films before his death at 24, but wonderful films!
An excellent driver, he was driving his Porsche Spyder when a car cut him off in the middle of the countryside – a silly and unexpected accident – and this sealed his destiny.

Child of the seraglio, with parents who are both actors, not to mention several members of her family work in the cinema industry, Angelina Jolie has however always seemed atypical in this environment. As a teenager, she stood out through her rebellious and solitary nature, sought her way, dressed in punk, and did not feel comfortable anywhere.
For her, Uranus is in Libra and in the 4th house, in a perfect square with the Ascendant Cancer. It would be complicated to better illustrate wounds linked to one's origins. After a few somewhat erratic quests, she decided to resume cinema, achieving a sensational breakthrough.
After turning into a sex symbol, she played opposite Brad Pitt in the memorable Mr. and Mrs. Smith. The actor was in a relationship with Jennifer Aniston those days but left everything for this Uranian with an exceptional career (just like his) which then took him into a hurly-burly of life.
A conventional scandal. The two lovebirds traveled around the world, adopted many children, and gave birth to three biological children: Angelina Jolie leads a frantic life and loves to fly planes.
This is not the last surprise that the actress has in store for her admirers, since she seems to be devoting herself more and more to humanitarian missions, effectively using her glamorous image, a bit like Lady Di.
Today, aged 48, she still seems to be settling scores with Brad Pitt but accepts her destiny, alone at the helm, independent and through complete freedom.

Jack-of-all-trades, singer, presenter, humorist and columnist, Russell Brand is one of those celebrities who can't be labeled: and that's good! Like Dean and Jolie, Russell Brand, went through a chaotic childhood. He never shied away from solemnizing his courageous mother, while being less enthusiastic about his very unpredictable father.
He quickly took advantage of having free rein, Russell Brand rapidly embarked on an adult life, doing theater and consuming narcotics from the age of 15 to 16.
The Stand-up discipline gave him a breakthrough, a perfect beginning for improvisational talents granted by this natal Uranus. Television, Uranian world as well, reached out to him: he took charge of very popular British programs like Big Brother then Leicester Square.
In regard to Brand, Uranus is located at the end of Libra, in the 8th house, and squared to the Capricorn Ascendant. The planet is at the heart of a T-square between Venus and the Ascendant, which led to a very scattered love life.
Fortunately, the aspect is counterbalanced by a trine of Mercury, which rules the Sun.
Even behind his professional successes, the disturbed child was never really far away. He said he himself suffers from bipolar disorder and an attention deficit hyperactivity.
He also defends a host of principles and original ideas in the books he has written, namely his autobiography and Revolution, a work in which he talks about being against consumer credit and abolishing honorary titles (doctor, senator, milord, etc.) among other things and the establishment of local, organic, and ecological food production.
Indeed, Uranians always dream of a better and a different world!

No one will be too surprised to learn that the tigress Tina Turner is also a good representative of this aspect: her Ascendant in Leo is thwarted by a Uranian square in sector 10 (career), located in Taurus.
In her case, the fixed mode explains the reason for her desire to emancipate, which was resisted in a major way, more than once.
We find a context identical to the three previous cases, namely an unstable family and a fleeing and violent father.
Unfortunately, this situation pushed her first to rush into the arms of a violent man too, Ike Turner. She was still a minor when they met, Tina Turner fell under the yoke of a mentor, who manipulated and exploited her.
She assumed the consequences of her actions, enduring its humiliations, constraints, and other excesses. This marital hell, as she calls it in her autobiography, lasted 16 years. Fortunately, the Uranian trigger occurred right in the midst and made her muster up the guts to leave this husband who was suffocating her. She obtained the divorce in 1978.
In fact, her solo career has proven to be even more brilliant, given that she has become one of the most popular artists in the world.
Since the 2000s, as she got older, she felt the need to limit her projects and other public appearances. She now lives peacefully in Switzerland and takes care of her weakened health.
A beautiful revenge on fate, she was indeed mistreated by Ike Turner but now is able to find genuine support from her current husband.
