The Sun and the Ascendant in conjunction

Astrological aspects: general introduction

The analysis of a natal chart must be as comprehensive as possible. This is what we do as we make our personalized reports available in our e-shop. It must be borne in mind that many astrologers concentrate on the interpretation of planets in signs and in houses, and of angles, without paying enough attention to aspects. On the contrary, we believe that when aspects involve personal planets between themselves or slow-moving planets, they are of fundamental importance. In all cases, they are at least as significant as the Ascendant or the Sun. This is particularly relevant when the orb is tight (i.e. when the aspect is exact). This is the criterion we apply for this new series of articles which describe how well-known personalities experience certain aspects.

The Sun and the Ascendant in conjunction

This article discusses an aspect between a planet and an angle of the sky map, specifically the conjunction of the Sun with the Ascendant, in cases where it does not receive any negative aspects.

As a reminder, when it is commonly said that someone is Aries or Taurus and so on, reference is made to the position of the Sun in sign in the theme.

The Ascendant, on the other hand, does not concern a celestial body like the Sun, but is a fictitious point located in the astrological sign at the eastern horizon that rises at the exact moment of birth. It depends on the place and the exact time of this, and is therefore a very personalized element of the chart. Indeed, it moves on average by one degree every four minutes, and by a whole sign in two hours.

The Sun animates our deep self, our will, our need for authentic expression, our deepest aspirations. Very different, the Ascendant pertains to the way we present ourselves to the world, and not what we really are. It is somewhat the costume we choose - more or less, the question of free will being far too complex to be discussed here - it is our appearance: it describes what others perceive of us. It is related to our look but also to our vitality and health.

So much so that some amateur astrologers have fun guessing someone's Ascendant whose birth time is unknown, taking into account simply his physique. Unfortunately, even for an experienced astrologer, this does not work or very badly, because the risk of error is significant. Physical appearance depends not only on the Ascendant but on a combination of different factors of the sky map, including the sign and planet dominants, which themselves depend on the strength of active aspects, dignities, planetary activity, and their angularity. Moreover, depending on whether the Ascendant itself receives such or such a tight aspect (with a weak orb) from a planet, the appearance, the look of the native will be modified: Jupiter brings, for example, roundness mixed with power, Uranus a certain singularity (tall height or other particularity), Mars a sporty side, Mercury lightness and mobility, etc.

The Sun Ascendant duo represents one of the main keys to understanding the character, and when the two objects are not hindered, they enhance the ability to radiate with intensity.

In general, we are dealing with natives who exude charisma and natural authority. When they enter a room, silence is made, glances turn towards them as their magnetism is present and visible.

Indeed, when the deep being and the apparent being coincide, it results in a greater power of affirmation than in other Sun Ascendant combinations for which it is necessary to compose with different character traits, which do not always agree, such as the duos of signs that follow each other: Aries and Taurus, Taurus and Gemini, etc. which have almost nothing in common.

Let us add that personalities who possess this "double sign" quite logically correspond to the archetype of the sign, and that the Sun will often be part of the dominants, and this all the more when there is a conjunction between Ascendant and Sun.

These interpretations are also valid, in a much more attenuated way, for a positive aspect to this angle. Here, the effect of the conjunction is simply much stronger than if it were a mere trine or sextile, but it goes in the same direction.

In order to better explain this aspect, we are mentioning several well-known personalities. Here Jean-Claude Van Damme, Leonard Cohen, Lucy Lawless, and Alyssa Milano. This article deliberately isolates the aspects so as to better describe them. For this reason, it claims on no account to be a psychological analysis of the celebrity in question, for whom many other articles are available in the "Focus" section.

It is possible to find thousands of other horoscopes having the Sun and the Ascendant in conjunction (or any other aspects), with the online tool search. The planets, positions in sign and in house as well as the orb, are configurable.

Jean-Claude Van Damme

Jean-Claude Van Damme / Author: Georges Biard 08-2012 / CC BY-SA (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/deed.en)

Belgian, martial arts specialist, and very extroverted, Jean-Claude Van Damme or JCVD as he is often nicknamed, is a living embodiment of the American dream. He corresponds to his Sun Ascendant conjunction in Libra, which reflects a need to please and seduce at every moment.

Venus, ruler of this Sun Ascendant duo, is found in Scorpio and in the 2nd house. It indicates that the stunt actor is much more subtle than one might think at first glance. In sextile to the Moon and square to Uranus, his charming side has well helped him to earn money, even though he is not immune to some unexpected disappointments in this area.

It's a little-known fact, but when he was young, JCVD practiced classical dance, a typical art of Libra and even more so of a double Libra, in his quest for visual perfection.

Then, JCVD also did bodybuilding, with the aim of attracting attention and asserting himself. In doing so, he follows the injunctions of a favorable Sun on this Ascendant which keeps him lucid enough not to fall into excess.

Certainly, the general public - especially French-speaking - has sometimes associated him with some of his absurd quotes that made people laugh. However, the actor consciously played on this flaw, thus seeking to compose a fun character, who was afraid of nothing.

The most famous quote is probably this one: I am fascinated by air. If we removed the air from the sky, all the birds would fall to the ground... and the planes too... At the same time, you can't touch the air... it exists and it doesn't exist... it feeds man without him being hungry. It's magic. (...) Air is a bit like my brain.

Without knowing it, JCVD was perhaps expressing in this way an astrological reality about his planetary signature, all airy like the sign of Libra!

Leonard Cohen

What a complex artist! We know today that one should not trust the apparent dignity and true modesty of Leonard Cohen, two emblematic qualities of Virgo.

As often, this sign turns out to be full of facets and Leonard Cohen, a myth of an era and double Virgo, illustrates it perfectly well.

Born in a wealthy environment in Montreal, Leonard Cohen was torn, in his early youth, between the desire to follow a rather bourgeois path - he embarked on law studies - and the attraction of poetry and bohemian life.

We all know the rest, as he leaves us a work that will have made more than one dream. In his case, the Sun, which is closely conjunct to the Ascendant, is square to the Midheaven (the career) and sextile to Pluto. The planet is largely dominant, suggesting an ego larger than he would admit.

This configuration shows the dilemmas we just talked about, the difficulty of reconciling the temptation of social success, hard to openly assume for a Virgo native, and a depth, a power that he had within him.

This need for recognition allowed him to combat his lack of self-confidence, quite common for a Virgo native. He did not like his voice, yet extraordinary with its Plutonian gravity, especially when compared to another great of the time: "I am small, emaciated, I have acne scars. I can't hide my Jewish origins unlike Dylan".

Despite everything, he will overcome what he considered as weaknesses, according to the biography of Sylvie Simmons in 2012: "Thus, he assumed these weaknesses like Christ the sins of humanity and made a pleasing offering to the God of Israel who, charmed, gave him in return the grace to seduce his audience". A beautiful tribute that well illustrates this solar position.

Mercury, ruler of the Sun and the Ascendant is in house 1 and in Libra. Well aspected by Mars and Saturn, it certainly contributed to quickly give the singer the image of a real seducer and ladies' man.

For the anecdote, the astrologer will have noticed that his successful song "I'm Your Man" released in 1988 reflects, maturity arriving, assurance and a beautiful self-affirmation, Leonard Cohen having become more solar than Ascendant Virgo, in accordance with what we are used to say concerning these two elements of the theme.

Lucy Lawless

With the Ascendant and the Sun in Aries (as well as the Moon, which we will not discuss here, deliberately, since the article is a focus between two astrological data), Lucy Lawless, a double Aries, could only have an assertive, dynamic and full of vitality personality, and this especially since Mars, the ruler of the chart, is itself in house 1 and without any dissonance.

In her case, the social position in view of her father, mayor and then president of finance for the municipality where she grew up, probably served as a model for her.

Let's not forget indeed that the Sun also represents the father figure and in her case, he clearly transmitted the desire to shine and to follow her own path, very much in the Aries style.

After discovering drama during her high school years, she will start by travelling and having multiple experiences without asking anyone.

Thanks to her striking appearance that captures attention, Lucy Lawless then participates in the Miss New Zealand competition and wins the crown at 21 years old.

Normal for an Aries, knowing that the sign generally wants to play leading roles, and if possible at a young age.

This crowning will serve as a springboard for a career in cinema. Her beginnings in advertising and on television allow her to land small roles, one of which is in a series that features characters from mythology. Once again, she hits the mark and becomes the warrior princess Xena in 1995, who gives the Greek demigod a hard time, and seduces many fans excited by her role.

She is best known for this character, even though she has diversified since then.

However, it should be noted that the weight of Saturn, also in house 1, has been felt over the years. Despite all the fire that lives within her, Lucy Lawless has had a discreet evolution in recent years.

Whatever the case, she has amply taken advantage of her dynamic and dominant solar configuration.

Alyssa Milano

Alyssa Milano / Author : Tom Sorensen 12-2011 / CC BY-SA (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0/deed.en)

On the Wikipedia page of the talented actress, a typical comment of this solar position on the Ascendant is listed: Alyssa Milano grew up in the public eye.

Thus, early success and good fortune marked the journey of the actress who attended her first auditions at 8 years old.

One must mention that starting by playing the role of Arnold Schwarzenegger's daughter, she set the bar quite high from the beginning.

However, it was the series Charmed and its Girl Power ideology that immediately endeared her to all the teenagers who identified with her. This corresponds well to a Sun in Sagittarius, placed on the Ascendant.

Doubling down with the natural confidence of the sign and this Sun, Alyssa Milano has always given the impression of holding the reins herself. In other words, her ability to seize opportunities, characteristic of Sagittarius, worked perfectly to lay the groundwork for her career. One will have noted the presence in house 1 of the ruler of the theme, Jupiter, which amplifies these assets.

Let us note that the duo is sextile to Uranus and square to Pluto. Although she quickly experienced the joys of fame, Alyssa Milano was not content with this status, becoming a highly committed activist for the #MeToo cause.

She thus played a key role in the mindset change that has taken off since the Harvey Weinstein affair. Her Sun, both buffeted by Pluto (sexuality, power) and supported by Uranus (surprise, original ingenuity), allowed her to strike with the efficiency of lightning.
