The Moon and Mercury in Dynamic Aspect

Astrological aspects: general introduction

The analysis of a natal chart must be as comprehensive as possible. This is what we do as we make our personalized reports available in our e-shop. It must be borne in mind that many astrologers concentrate on the interpretation of planets in signs and in houses, and of angles, without paying enough attention to aspects. On the contrary, we believe that when aspects involve personal planets between themselves or slow-moving planets, they are of fundamental importance. In all cases, they are at least as significant as the Ascendant or the Sun. This is particularly relevant when the orb is tight (i.e. when the aspect is exact). This is the criterion we apply for this new series of articles which describe how well-known personalities experience certain aspects.

The Moon and Mercury in challenging aspect

Here we are going to examine an aspect of tension in more detail between the two fastest stars of the zodiac, the Moon and Mercury. They don't lack common points; both are linked to primacy (in the characterological sense of the term) and to early ages in existence.

However, they possess an important difference, the Moon only lives through the perspective of subjectivity and mood, while Mercury would like to be more objective as it works with the mind.

As we know, the Moon is the counterpart of the Sun which concerns our inner world. It is driven by the yin energy. It governs our emotions, our instinctive requirements, our safety reflexes, as well as the nurturing principles.

It is linked to the feminine side for men and for women, by its receptivity. On the negative side, it indicates a passive, reactive temperament, which gets carried away by events that are indolent or even elusive. It can lead to addictions since it corresponds to all forms of addiction.

For its part, Mercury is related to the intellect, exchanges, and communication. The planet governs our ability to adapt, our movements and our greater or lesser ability to communicate, especially when it comes to trade.

We must also keep in mind the case that concerns us, that a badly experienced Mercury concerns the flaws of one's usual qualities: it can indicate manipulation, bad faith, cunning (symbolically, Mercury is the god of thieves), dispersion, excessive speed or sometimes superficiality.

How do Lunar and Mercurian energies combine when they oppose each other? When a person is affected by this aspect, there is a struggle between emotion and reason.

The latter feels torn between the reflex of wanting to find logical explanations for those triggered by feelings. The entourage does not know what to expect given this person's spontaneous reactions, which seem to fluctuate.

In some cases, the more this person thinks, the more he/she gets angry, paradoxically. The solution can only come if one were to take a step back from the current situation. You have to remain calm and put things into perspective, which is not always an easy task.

Imprisoned in his/her inner world of daydreams and poetry, this person is unable to effectively communicate their profound thoughts.

Conversely, there is also the fear of seeing one's intimacy get disturbed, which leads to misunderstandings through exchanges and reinterpretations, in complete subjectivity.

Those who have to deal with themselves or with their loved ones, in regard to such a behavior, will have to be lenient with this little "flaw" which is not so serious, at the end of the day. One should also not forget that any dynamic aspect in a theme, if it represents a challenge, turns into an asset in life when it is mastered, often at maturity.

In order to better explain this aspect, we are mentioning several well-known personalities, here Robert Redford (unfavorable conjunction), Uma Thurman (square), Prince (square), and Judy Garland (opposition). This article deliberately isolates the aspect (a square or an opposition) so as to better describe them. For this reason, it claims on no account to be a psychological analysis of the celebrity in question, for whom many other articles are available in the "Focus" section.

It is possible to find thousands of other horoscopes having the Moon in aspect of square or opposition with Mercury (or any other aspects), with the online tool search. The planets, positions in sign and in house as well as the orb, are configurable.

Robert Redford

Let's begin with the famous actor Robert Redford, who has a very close conjunction between the Moon and Mercury in Virgo and in House 6. The duo undergoes an opposition of Saturn (in House 12) and a square of Jupiter (in House 9) which shakes him up strongly.

It should be noted that the sign and the house (which represents health and daily obligations) are both in affinity with Mercury. We can deduce that the latter probably took over the Moon. The difficulties related to this aspect must have led him to face certain obstacles in expressing his emotions, especially since he was a child.

Even if he didn't speak much about this period of his life, we know that he suffered from being born into a very modest family, in the Hispanic community of Santa Monica. During his youth, he came across a feeling of suffocation on a daily basis - represented by Saturn in the 12th house – which certainly led to the unacknowledged dream of seeing the world and its destiny in a big way: Jupiter, very powerful in his sign and in sector 9 explains his attraction to wide open spaces.

It is likely that he knew how to take advantage of the contradictory aspects of his personality. Ecologist right from the start, he bought several hectares for example on the Sundance site, as he wanted it to respect the environment. Years later, he was at the origin of the eponymous festival, which reveals independent talents, in this area that genuinely matters to him.

Having communicated little about his personal life, he now enjoys living in this haven of peace and tranquility, far from the limelight.

Uma Thurman

Cinephiles are aware that the beautiful Uma Thurman was born into an intellectual and bohemian family: she owes the choice of her first name to her father, a professor of religion and a convinced Buddhist. When it comes to her, Mercury dominates, in the 9th house and is in conjunction with the Midheaven (the career), in her solar sign, Taurus.

The planet also forms a noticeable square with the Moon in Aquarius and in House 6. Therefore, one can feel contradictions in terms of work and daily life.

It didn't take her long to distance herself from her native environment, as she left school at 15 and immediately began a career as an actress. Her parents weren't thrilled about it, but her natal Moon in Aquarius must have titillated her.

Despite being famous and successful rather quickly, the actress never wanted to dwell on her intimate life. It was only many years she confessed during an interview about having had an abortion when she was a teenager and almost being a victim of Harvey Weinstein.

To break her silence, she had to be persuaded to defend fair causes, in particular the right of women to freely dispose of their bodies and their choices.

Today, she is less present in the cinema and remains discreet, she does not seek to be talked about at the slightest opportunity.

Prince

In retrospect, it's clear that Prince, a musical genius, maintained a teenage side throughout his life. He was a very early virtuoso and creator and composed his first song at the age of 7 and danced on stage with James Brown at the age of 10.

He mastered all kinds of instruments and never stopped experimenting with new genres of music. We can also find the sense of multiplicity through the nicknames that have been attributed to him: the Purple One, His Royal Badness, The Prince of Funk or even the Minneapolis Kid. All these words seem to hit the target.

To sum up, these identities that fluctuate according to moods go well with the logic of a native of Gemini marked by an angular Moon.

However, the aspect of tension between the solar ruler, Mercury, which is in this sign, and a Moon in Pisces, does not facilitate verbal expression. He undoubtedly had a problem with excessive emotions due to which he wasn't able to transcribe his feelings into words.

Beyond his disappearance, here are still many enigmas concerning the musician. Moreover, clever as any native Gemini, he quickly understood that the many rumors that were circulating about him served at the same time to inscribe his legend.

Judy Garland

Judy Garland / Author : Clarence Sinclair Bull - Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer publicity photographer 1943 Public domain

Not everything has been rosy, to say the least, for Judy Garland's career. With her two sisters, she was brought to perform at a very young age on stage and was pushed by her actor parents. After getting advice from the latter, then from all those who shaped her life, she changed her first name, then her name. She was extremely rigorous while training for comedy and treated it as the Holy Grail.

This is how she caught the attention from the powerful boss at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, who turned her into the starlet of the 1930s, through family films.

Unfortunately, there was a steep price to pay, starting with having been robbed of the little pleasures of adolescence. When it came to her, there was an opposition between the Moon, on the last degree of Sagittarius, and Mercury, on the first degree of Cancer, which predominated her astral chart.

The aspect is very precise, with a Saturn that adds a touch of severity and difficulty in extracting itself from authority.

This Moon in house 6 and Mercury in 12 weighed a lot on her health (the two houses are related to this domain). Judy Garland remains known for her many addictions which have been fatal.

These began with taking medication from an early age, to make her lose weight when she was still growing up. This is what the studios wanted, but it was also the condition that was laid down, in order to go on a series of shootings. Following which, her own consumption of amphetamines, alternated with barbiturates, and this didn't help.

This did not prevent the actress and singer from leading an exceptional career. Peter Lennon, in The Guardian in 1999, for example identified Garland as a "chameleon" artist because of her ability to alternate between comic, musical and dramatic roles.
