Strong 6th Sign
Just for a change, we shall begin this portrait by focusing on the importance of a House of the natal chart. In the case of Robert Redford, a giant of American cinema and a cult figure of the seventies, one might expect to see that one or several Houses considered important are highlighted, the Ascendant or the Midheaven for instance.
But it is not so, since in the chart of this outstanding actor, five planets, including the luminaries, are posited in the 6th House. The astrologer notices in addition that four of them – Venus, Mercury, Neptune, the ruler of his Ascendant in Pisces, and the Moon – are in Virgo.
The 6th sign increases this symbolism. The willingness to do a service dictates Redford's attitude in his every daily move. Whereas he must overcome the contradiction of his solar self, which endows him with nobility and presence, though self-restrained owing to the above features, the natal Moon reveals that in the private life, sensitivity is under the yoke of Mercury's reason. Last but not least, Neptune, ruler of the Ascendant in Pisces, is part of the group (6th House in Virgo). To sum up, whatever Redford's additional traits may be, everything indicates that the natal chart ought to be read through the prism of Virgo in the 6th House, i.e. the need to be helpful, simplicity, love for animals and nature, and some degree of modesty despite the fact that the Sun is in a blazing sign and Jupiter in domicile dominates the entire chart.
A Zapping Mercury
Going back into the past, Redford's childhood is more in line with these astrological positions than the general public may think. He was born in California, the homeland of cinema. His father was a milkman and his mother, a housewife. He grew up in a modest Hispanic district. With Neptune, the child escaped through dreams of a better life. At school, under Mercury's influence, still hindered by the lack of the culture of his origins, things went awry.
However, Redford seized every opportunity, for he is good at sports. Baseball allowed him to earn a scholarship and to join a university in Colorado. He spent a short time there, because he dropped out rapidly after his first failure. Then he worked on an oil rig, a job he chose in order to make money rapidly and to enjoy his financial independence.
Redford found a new vocation. Fascinated by European painters, he settled in Paris then in Italy, and tried his hand at fine arts.
Leo Side Under Strict Control
Once his reserves were depleted, he returned to New York to embark on the performing arts. Suddenly, it all clicked into place. After his beginnings on the stage and the television, he caught the attention of Sidney Lumet. In 1965, on the big screen, he took his first steps in Inside Daisy Clover. The role earned him the Most Promising Newcomer Golden Globe. Scenarios rolled in.
The following year, he played with Marlon Brando and Jane Fonda in The Chase by Arthur Penn. In 1969, he formed a duet with Paul Newman in a western which became a cult film, Butch Cassidy and the Kid. The seventies offered him a consecration. He played in many films directed by Sydney Pollack: Jeremiah Johnson, The Way We Were, Three Days of the Condor, among other hits.
He did not get big-headed although he was ackowledged by the most important personalities, by the public, and by the women who fell under his spell. Virgo is always there to control Leo. A perfectionist, he went behind the camera, and in 1981, with Ordinary People, he won the Best Director award.
It was impossible afterwards to forget the romantic actor in Out of Africa, Sydney Pollack's big production in Kenya. With Meryl Streep, he left the audiences of the whole world in tears. This is the manifestation of the influence of Venus and Neptune.
Virgo and Ecology
In the nineties, a new turn started for Redford. It was marked by the strong characteristics of Virgo and the 6th House, i.e. concern for the environment. He shot A River Runs Through It (1992) then The Horse Whisperer (1996). He founded the Sundance Film Festival in a small city in Utah. He felt in love with the location several years before, and gave it this name which refers to Sundance Kid. This is indeed the child of the royal sign of Leo imposing his views with authority but for a good cause. He created an ecologist ski resort, and militated in its favour more and more actively.
Neptune's Idealism
It must be noted that in his private life, the tensions in Redford's natal chart give him a demanding and tormented character. This partially comes from the T-square linking the planets in Virgo to Jupiter in Sagittarius and in the 9th House, as well as to Saturn in the 12th House. Owing to this concentration of raw energy, Redford is torn between various needs challenging him in the literal sense of the word, even though he may not show it. Fleeing to wide open spaces may bring some relief (Jupiter in Sagittarius and in the 9th House: the cow-boy living in a wild area).
As far as love is concerned, he was married for 27 years to a Mormon lady from Utah with whom he had four children. He divorced in 1985 and remarried at 71 with a painter with whom he still lives. A priori, his profile matches what we wrote earlier about the position of the Moon and Venus, two planets involved in feelings, conjunct Neptune in Virgo.

Under Saturn's Influence in 2018
In 2018, the transit of the slow-moving planets highlights the Earth element and benefits Redford's stellium in Virgo. Pluto sends a lasting trine to natal Mercury and natal Moon, while in the course of next spring, Uranus entering Taurus will support natal Venus.
However, the recent transit of Saturn on the Midheaven, then on the North Node, indicates that the actor is aware of the passing of time. Although in great shape during the last Sundance Festival, he hinted that he might make less movies.
