The Sun and Mars in tense aspect

Astrological aspects: general introduction

The analysis of a natal chart must be as comprehensive as possible. This is what we do as we make our personalized reports available in our e-shop. It must be borne in mind that many astrologers concentrate on the interpretation of planets in signs and in houses, and of angles, without paying enough attention to aspects. On the contrary, we believe that when aspects involve personal planets between themselves or slow-moving planets, they are of fundamental importance. In all cases, they are at least as significant as the Ascendant or the Sun. This is particularly relevant when the orb is tight (i.e. when the aspect is exact). This is the criterion we apply for this new series of articles which describe how well-known personalities experience certain aspects.

The Sun and Mars in challenging aspect

In this article, we examine the discordant relationship between the Sun and Mars, whether it's an unfavorable conjunction - meaning it receives one or more significant negative aspects - a square, or an opposition.

The Sun and Mars, archetypes of masculinity, respectively illuminate our potential for radiance and our need for action.

In the analysis of the birth chart, the Sun occupies the first place due to its major influence: it reveals our vitality and unveils how we assert our authentic self, how we exercise our will. It allows us to express our tastes and deep inclinations.

In a feminine chart, the Sun provides indications about the type of man who attracts her, with whom she desires a lasting relationship, especially for marriage.

As for Mars, it draws its symbolism from the warlike actions of Ares, the ancient Greek god of war. Unpopular for his fiery and explosive character, he nonetheless represented invincible courage.

Mars is our driving force; it urges us to engage in combat, both literally and figuratively. It imparts a courageous or daring temperament, driven by the need to take the reins.

In a woman's chart, Mars also describes the kind of men who attract her physically, instinctively, for simple adventures rather than stability and long-term commitment.

For all natives, the position of this planet in sign and house indicates the areas where personal efforts are made to improve their situation. However, when Mars is negatively aspected, it can lead to violence, impulsiveness, or recklessness, sometimes manifesting as inflammations, fevers, or injuries.

When Mars and the Sun, two Fire planets, form dynamic aspects such as a square, opposition, or tense conjunction, the blend takes on a spicy flavor. Individuals involved feel torn between their certainties, based on their experience, and their frenzied desire for novelty. This combination reinforces authority, but it can become arrogant, even abrasive, tinged with dogmatism. If this is the case, it may result in a lack of authority instead.

If Mars dominates, the character becomes rebellious to any constraint, sometimes bordering on asocial behavior. The native disregards wise advice or patience, preferring to follow their own path.

When the Sun is predominant, pride makes the person self-important and challenging to live with due to their mental rigidity and the belief that they are above others.

Like any dissonance, this one must be channeled and overcome, depending on the other factors in the overall chart. Once the challenge is managed, often with maturity, the qualities of Mars and the Sun can be expressed favorably. There are no "bad" aspects or absolute fatalism; there are only challenges to face in order to transform vulnerability into an asset.

In order to better explain this aspect, we are mentioning several well-known personalities (here James Franco (square), Milla Jovovich (opposition), Robert De Niro (square), and Natalie Wood (unfavorable conjunction)). This article deliberately isolates the aspect so as to better describe them. For this reason, it claims on no account to be a psychological analysis of the celebrity in question, for whom many other articles are available in the "Focus" section.

It is possible to find thousands of other horoscopes having the Sun in tense aspect with Mars (or any other aspects), with the online tool search. The planets, positions in sign and in house as well as the orb, are configurable.

James Franco

Let's begin by analyzing the connection between these two planets in James Franco's chart, which appears very consistent. The American actor, director, screenwriter, and producer is an Aries and has both the Sun and Mars angular, emphasizing their dominance.

It is interesting to note their mutual reception since the Sun resides in the sign ruled by Mars, and Mars is positioned in Leo under the dominance of this luminary. However, the dynamic square aspect between these planets is offset, adding an additional specific factor. In his case, overcoming the challenges of this discordance may be easier to resolve.

Considering that the Sun and Mars, both Fire signs, are also in the same element, it is a matter of managing the abundance of available energies.

His iconic role in Spider-Man, the blockbuster that catapulted him to stardom, seems to align perfectly with this impulsive temperament, providing an outlet for his need for action.

However, he did not escape the #MeToo movement in the United States and faced allegations of inappropriate conduct.

Franco has partially acknowledged these accusations, publicly discussing a struggle with sex addiction since 2016. This issue resonates with his astrological chart, which is heavily influenced by testosterone.

Milla Jovovich

Famous for both her beauty and strong character, Milla Jovovich leads a versatile career, alternating between roles that showcase her talent and unique assets.

As a Sagittarius native, her birth chart features a Sun opposed to Mars in Gemini, located in the 12th house. The challenges appear to stem mainly from the position of this planet, suggesting the presence of hidden enemies, potentially harboring resentment or jealousy.

Often criticized by critics or questioned about her private life, Milla Jovovich has reacted as a rebel, refusing to be destabilized and sometimes even slamming the door in the face of those who bother her.

Her tumultuous family background, marked by unstable and unloving parents, has contributed to forging her resilience.

She is a compelling example that it is possible to use astrological tensions to achieve success without timidity and through sheer determination.

Robert De Niro

Robert De Niro / Author : Olivier Strecker, 05-2011 / CC BY-SA (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/deed.en)

A true cinema legend, Robert De Niro was born with a Sun in Leo square Mars in Taurus. The beginnings of this actor, who portrayed the timid lion from The Wizard of Oz in a school production, are anecdotal but ironically foreshadowing.

He later learned to roar with all his might, delighting film enthusiasts for over fifty years, successfully reconciling his desire for natural radiance associated with his Sun sign and the necessity to work, represented by Mars in Taurus.

Although it wasn't always easy, he never shied away from the physical demands of his roles, meticulously preparing for them.

His deep commitment shines through in his films, revealing brutal realities of war or the underworld, as well as the personal dramas of "ordinary" people willing to make any sacrifice for their passion.

As the need arose, he learned to play a musical instrument, handle firearms, or even gain a few dozen pounds (quickly lost after filming).

While universally described as calm, polite, and refined in everyday life, Robert De Niro has at times intimidated his co-stars.

Aware of the good fortune he has had, he strives to continue his path with more serenity, freed from the need to prove his worth, as was the case in his younger years.

Natalie Wood

Natalie Wood / Author : Unknown publicity photographer 04-1958 / Public domain

The unforgettable performer of West Side Story possesses a Sun-Mars conjunction that doesn't go unnoticed. These two planets, applying to Pluto, are in Cancer and in the 10th house, representing one's career and social standing.

However, they are afflicted by the Moon in a square aspect, exposing Natalie Wood to the vicissitudes of fame, a status hardly compatible with the intimate nature of her Sun sign and under the influence of the ruling planet.

As a child star, she was pushed by an unscrupulous mother who pursued her own ambitions through her daughter.

Of Russian origin and of modest means, although born in California, Natalie Wood must have felt a considerable pressure on her frail shoulders from a very young age. She had to compensate for the family's lack of income and the thirst for success by taking on roles from the age of 5.

Subjected to the whims of directors and the demands of her mother, the actress endured all sorts of hardships and tortures in the name of truth on screen. For example, she bore a lifelong scar on her wrist after being forced to run in pouring rain.

Later, she experienced a great passion with Robert Wagner, marked by a divorce and a remarriage ten years later.

Amid scandals and disputes, her death by drowning on November 29, 1981, remains shrouded in mystery. No one knows for sure if her beloved husband may have pushed her into the water during a dispute fueled by Wagner's jealousy of Christopher Walken.

The tragic death of the beautiful actress remains one of the most famous cold cases in the United States.

From an astrologer's perspective, the Sun-Mars duo, troubled in a Water sign with the involvement of Pluto, resonates with this murky disappearance. It is also noteworthy that Uranus in the 8th house potentially indicates an unusual ending.
