The Three Modes and the Fixed Principle
Interpreting a natal chart means first of all, as every astrology enthusiast knows, looking at where the planets are located in the zodiac signs, studying their dignity, identifying the angular houses, analyzing each planet-house connection, and paying close attention to the major aspects involving personal planets, especially the tight ones, which are the most powerful.
But this approach is far from complete, since other notions, admittedly less important, can add depth to our understanding of a personality. The hemispheres and quadrants, which reflect the distribution of the planets, the four elements, polarities, house emphasis, esoteric decans, the analysis of house rulers, planetary patterns, compound aspects, and modes, to name only some of them, all bring greater subtlety to the interpretation. In this new series of articles, we turn to the last of these categories, the cardinal, fixed, and mutable modes, beginning with the cardinal mode.
The twelve signs are divided into three groups, cardinal, fixed, and mutable, each with its own particular character. These modes are assigned according to the position of the sign within the season to which it belongs. Thus, Aries begins spring and is a cardinal sign. Virgo is the third sign of summer and is mutable, and so on.
The cardinal mode is associated with initiative, action, dynamism, momentum, impulse, and starting things. The fixed mode is about continuity, building, the desire to endure, to stabilize, to maintain a situation. The mutable mode, finally, favors adaptation, movement, improvement, and change.
No mode is “superior” to another. Every chart has its own distribution of modes, and that distribution is in itself an additional element to take into account. It works in the background, alongside the meanings supplied by the other factors.
Since there are three modes and twelve signs, beyond the general interpretation of the mode itself, we then need to look at which signs are giving it their particular nuance.
Let us see what happens with the fixed mode.
When the Fixed Mode Dominates the Chart
As the logical continuation of the cardinal mode, which encourages decision, impulse, and the desire for rapid action, the fixed mode corresponds to the will to stabilize what already exists. It favors perseverance, patience, and stubbornness, relying on the long term to consolidate what has been achieved. Sometimes obstinate, individuals with a strong fixed mode will resist being diverted from their goal. All their energy goes into avoiding anything that might lead them away from their path.
There is here a desire to progress, to explore things in greater depth, and to improve continuously, regardless of how long the effort lasts and without any particular concern for the schedule, the idea being simply to complete what has been undertaken.
Such stubbornness can, however, make the person rigid and too closed to useful help or sound advice that may come along. In some cases, it is better to abandon what had been started, and here it may sometimes take a long time before one finds the courage to change course and give up what had been acquired with so much effort. Learning to let go will be necessary.
The fixed mode is expressed through four distinct nuances, depending on the signs involved in the chart. Thus, Taurus will tend to stabilize the practical situation, Leo will be keen to strengthen the will even further and remain faithful to its identity, Scorpio will consolidate attachments through the emotional intensity invested in them, and Aquarius will strive to preserve ideas and principles.
Let us look in greater detail at what this means.
The Fixed Mode in Taurus: Practical Constancy
Taurus is the typical embodiment of the fixed mode. Its need for security, continuity, or tangible reference points generally corresponds to being grounded in concrete reality. This may concern, for example, the place where one lives, habits, relationships, income, and possessions. There is a rejection here of anything abrupt. If change occurs, it needs to happen gradually and smoothly, without sudden jolts.
Concentration on one's goals is favored. Faithfulness and endurance at work are favored as well. Time is an ally, with the aim of accumulating and consolidating what has been acquired.
On the other hand, these qualities are sometimes accompanied by possessiveness, excessive attachment, and, in some cases, stubbornness. There is a natural resistance to any change imposed from outside. In extreme situations, the refusal to abandon a project, leave a place, or move on may lead to real difficulties.
The Fixed Mode in Leo: Creative Constancy
With this sign, there is an apparent paradox between the nature of Fire, usually considered spontaneous (we generally think of the Fire of Aries), and the notion of fixity. In reality, Leo's Fire keeps the flame burning instead of lighting it. There is continuity in self-assertion, ambitions, willpower, and creative energy.
Thus, the fixed mode in this sign goes hand in hand with courage, loyalty, self-confidence, and authority. This inner assurance makes it possible to overcome obstacles and protect a creation, a team, one's family, or one's reputation with serenity.
With dissonant planets placed in this sign, vulnerabilities appear: misplaced pride, an inability to acknowledge mistakes, excessive authority, and significant sensitivity to any criticism, even if justified. The person may then retreat into their own world or into the character they have created for themselves, resulting in damage that could easily have been avoided with a little flexibility.
The Fixed Mode in Scorpio: Constancy in Passion
In this highly charged sign, emotions and deep bonds become crucial, more so than concrete achievements. One gives oneself without reserve to a project and, unlike Taurus and Leo, it is no longer possessions or image that matter, but the strength of feeling.
The ability to go all the way is remarkable here, whatever the difficulties. The person will want to analyze the situation in depth in order to bring it to completion, with tenacity, resistance, and concentration.
We often speak of a capacity for transformation in connection with this eighth sign. Yet transformation is a change. But this transformation, if it occurs, happens in a radical way, after a long period of reluctance or maturation. There is no ongoing fine-tuning, as we shall see in the next article on the mutable mode.
The possible excesses of the fixed mode resonate with the importance of emotions in this complex sign. With Scorpio, there may be a strong need for control, resentment, jealousy, a refusal to forgive careless words, or an inability to move on, with all the consequences this may bring.
The Fixed Mode in Aquarius: Intellectual Constancy
With Aquarius, once again, we find an apparent paradox. Aquarius is associated with freedom, unpredictability, originality, renewal, and a break with conventions. Yet constancy seems at odds with these concepts.
In reality, here too, the contradiction is only apparent. Aquarius can change collective rules, but not its own principles. Its independence of mind is such that it can support a minority view for a long time and strongly resist group pressure. It is in this sense that we can speak of fixity, because what is involved here is its convictions, not practical achievements, which may vary without being incompatible with this mode.
The constructive side of this mode expressed through Aquarius ranges from faithfulness to ideals to resistance to conformism, along with intellectual perseverance, long-term vision, the ability to develop innovative systems, and the strength to defend one's opinions during conflicts.
The challenge here will be to avoid falling into dogmatism, intellectual intolerance, rigidity, or the certainty of always being right. Care must be taken to prevent attachment to principles or reasoning from making the person less receptive to emotional considerations.

Muhammad Ali or the Will to Go the Distance
The fixed mode is illustrated in spectacular fashion by the chart of legendary boxer Muhammad Ali. Indeed, if there is one athlete who distinguished himself by his endurance, tenacity, and loyalty to his convictions, it is certainly him. Whatever the ups and downs of his career, he never stopped striving to return to the highest level.
We know in particular that he was stripped of his world title after refusing to serve in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and had to make immense efforts to regain it, despite the obstacles.
With a fixed mode above 83%, we thus find in his birth chart three fixed signs at the top of his sign dominants: Aquarius, Taurus, and Leo. The Moon, Mercury, and Venus are in Aquarius, Mars, Saturn, and Uranus in Taurus, and his Ascendant in Leo, a particularly clear concentration of this energy.

Jessica Alba or Building for the Long Term
With Jessica Alba, the fixed mode is expressed in a much more concrete way. Her career has thus been built and consolidated progressively, over time, in keeping with the character of Taurus. Alongside her acting career, she moved into entrepreneurship by creating The Honest Company in 2011. She then developed it over many years.
In her chart, the fixed mode exceeds 84%, with Taurus at the top of her sign dominants. We find there the Sun, Mercury, Venus, and Mars, no fewer than four personal planets, which is very rare. As for the Moon and the Ascendant, they are respectively in Aquarius and Leo, forming a very strong combination in fixed signs, with a clear predominance of the concrete and persevering dimension of Taurus.

Jennifer Jason Leigh or Constancy in Originality
With Jennifer Jason Leigh, the fixed mode takes on a much more intellectual and personal coloring. For several decades, the actress has remained faithful to a demanding career, marked by often unusual roles and unconventional choices, without systematically seeking the easiest or most commercial paths.
Her chart is a particularly spectacular case: the fixed mode reaches nearly 86%, with no fewer than seven planets in Aquarius, the Sun, the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. The Midheaven is also in this sign, illustrating in an almost caricatural way the ability of fixed Aquarius to defend a personal, original, and independent direction over the long term.

Drake or Intensity Over Time
The career of Drake also reflects the perseverance of the fixed mode. Since rising to prominence in the late 2000s, the Canadian rapper has managed to maintain a leading position in the music industry for many years, in a field where careers can nevertheless change very quickly.
In his chart, the fixed mode reaches more than 71%, with Scorpio at the top of his sign dominants. The Sun, Mercury, Venus, and Pluto are indeed in Scorpio, while Mars is in Aquarius, the Ascendant in Leo, and the Midheaven in Taurus. The four fixed signs are therefore represented in significant positions in the chart, with a strong predominance of Scorpio's intensity and tenacity.
