Interpreting a natal chart means first of all, as every astrology enthusiast knows, looking at where the planets are located in the zodiac signs, studying their dignity, identifying the angular houses, analyzing each planet-house connection, and paying close attention to the major aspects involving personal planets, especially the tight ones, which are the most powerful.
But this approach is far from complete, since other notions, admittedly less important, can add depth to our understanding of a personality. The hemispheres and quadrants, which reflect the distribution of the planets, the four elements, polarities, house emphasis, esoteric decans, the analysis of house rulers, planetary patterns, compound aspects, and modes, to name only some of them, all bring greater subtlety to the interpretation. In this new series of articles, we turn to the last of these categories, the cardinal, fixed, and mutable modes, beginning with the cardinal mode.
The twelve signs are divided into three groups, cardinal, fixed, and mutable, each with its own particular character. These modes are assigned according to the position of the sign within the season to which it belongs. Thus, Aries begins spring and is a cardinal sign. Virgo is the third sign of summer and is mutable, and so on.
The cardinal mode is associated with initiative, action, dynamism, momentum, impulse, and starting things. The fixed mode is about continuity, building, the desire to endure, to stabilize, to maintain a situation. The mutable mode, finally, favors adaptation, movement, improvement, and change.
No mode is “superior” to another. Every chart has its own distribution of modes, and that distribution is in itself an additional element to take into account. It works in the background, alongside the meanings supplied by the other factors.
Since there are three modes and twelve signs, beyond the general interpretation of the mode itself, we then need to look at which signs are giving it their particular nuance.
Let us see what happens with the cardinal mode.
When the Cardinal Mode Dominates the Chart
As we have seen, the cardinal mode calls for action, for turning thoughts into concrete initiatives. As soon as an idea springs to mind, someone strongly marked by this mode tends to start asking practical questions: how can I use this idea? What kind of structure should I create to carry my project through? There is a taste for making decisions and, if necessary, convincing others to come along.
This energy regularly shows itself through a multiplicity of goals over the course of a lifetime.
Waiting, on the other hand, is not a strong point, and patience even less so. Creativity, courage, and boldness are very much present and generally help the person achieve what he had in mind. But too much speed, too much fire, and too little preparation can also sink the project. Rivalry, leadership issues, or difficulty letting go of an idea may enter the picture as well, even when that idea seems doomed to fail.
So, as with signs, elements, houses, and planets, every mode has its strengths and its vulnerabilities. These depend in particular on the signs involved.
The Cardinal Mode in Aries: Direct Initiative
When the sign involved, or the sign that carries the most weight in the chart, is Aries, we find the most recognizable form of the cardinal mode. There is a need for speed, a need to find out immediately whether the project is viable or not. The person simply has to give it a try.
Aries tends to create a context of competition and urgency, often somewhat imaginary, that pushes him to get things started at all costs, however inadequate the preparation may be. For him, the real risk would be to become a follower, something he would find unbearable.
One of the usual Aries characteristics is a rapid loss of enthusiasm. Novelty has tremendous appeal, but by definition, it does not last. If preparation takes too long, other ideas for action appear, and the motivation behind the original project can drop sharply.
The Cardinal Mode in Cancer: Protective Initiative
People are often surprised to learn that Cancer belongs to the cardinal mode, because of the ideas usually associated with the sign: the need for protection, trust that is slow to develop, fear of novelty and of its possible consequences for security, whether emotional or practical.
But the mode is definitely there, even if it is less visible than in Aries. It works at its best as soon as Cancer's favorite areas are involved: family, home, business, land, property, anything that needs to be made secure. Or developed. The initiatives will be all the stronger when an emotional challenge is at stake.
The other side of the coin is precisely the possibility of being too much under the sway of emotions. Sometimes this works in the right direction, but in other cases, very human and not always controllable issues may arise, such as touchiness or questions of authority.
The Cardinal Mode in Libra: Relational Initiative
As with Cancer, a beginner may be surprised that gentle Libra belongs to the cardinal mode. But softness, charm, and diplomacy are perfectly compatible with initiative. It simply takes a very different form from the Aries version. It becomes all the more effective when the situation involves alliances, agreements, encounters, or associations.
The means of action here is social and relational. The person has a talent for finding the right words and the right timing, and can act successfully in negotiations, partnerships, or when the balance within a group needs to be changed.
The approach is more discreet than in Aries, but just as effective. Less frontal, it focuses instead on the result, obtained this time through charm and an ability to influence people almost without seeming to do so.
The Cardinal Mode in Capricorn: Strategic Initiative
This last sign may also seem less like a cardinal sign because of its somewhat serious and cold image, but that image is in fact just a facade. Capricorn sticks to his ideas, looks very far ahead, and follows a methodical approach. The person concerned does not appear to rush forward, but careful, studious preparation does not take away from initiative. What matters is building something, with control, responsibility, and staying power.
The slowness is deceptive. The iron will is very real, and people around him can be surprised to see that once the project has been launched, it soon gathers momentum. Which makes sense, since the groundwork has been done for a long time beforehand.
Ambition is often the driving force here, and the action undertaken has a strong chance of working out. Difficulties, however, may come from the sign's somewhat stern, technical, and purely efficiency-oriented side. Capricorn may be the master of time, but not always of emotions: harshness, excessive control, and oversized aspirations can slow down or even thwart the long-awaited success.

Tyra Banks or the Taste for Taking the Lead
The chart of Tyra Banks offers a very good illustration of a dominant cardinal mode. This television host, actress, model, producer, and entrepreneur has launched numerous projects and carried them through successfully, with a master's touch.
The cardinal mode exceeds 75% in her chart. Particularly striking are the Moon and Mars in the 10th House, in Aries, the sign that also contains her Midheaven, a configuration very much in tune with this dynamic.

Arthur Rimbaud or the Impulse to Break Away and Start Again
With Arthur Rimbaud, we find a very different expression of the cardinal mode, this time directed toward new departures and breaks, rather than straightforward social success.
With exceptional precocity, Rimbaud overturned all the literary codes of his time and, at twenty, almost gave up writing altogether to devote himself to travel and trade, from then on multiplying projects and initiatives.
In his chart, the cardinal mode reaches nearly 72%, with Libra strongly emphasized: it contains the Sun, the Moon, and Venus, as well as his Ascendant.

The case of James Dean adds another angle on the possible manifestations of the cardinal mode, which exceeds 75% in his chart. Here, it expresses itself intensely through a strong taste for risk and a fierce need for independence. The actor simply has to follow his own path, with no concern whatsoever for the conventions of his time.
His three dominant signs are Capricorn, Aries, and Cancer, while Uranus, very powerful and almost exactly conjunct the Aries Ascendant, with an orb of 13 minutes, makes freedom and the absence of constraints sacred values he could hardly renounce, with, as the other side of the coin, a frequent difficulty accepting his obligations.
