A Grand Cross Prompting to Action
What is much in evidence in Kathy Bates's chart is the pattern composed of the Grand Cross, or Grand Square, its other name. With this kind of chart, the person is fortunate enough to have a good representation of the Fire, Earth, Air, and Water elements, since the planets are posited there de facto. In Bates' case, there is also the privilege of involving the angles of the chart. Enough to swing!
Let us have a closer look at this comedian who is popular although her name is not always immediately remembered by the public. However, if her face and her presence are mentioned in many films which have passed the test of time, then, a lot of people could probably identify Bates.
In a word, she came from the theatre and after some time, she made a breakthrough in the eighties. It was mainly her lead role in Misery, an adaptation by Rob Reiner after a Stephen King's novel, in 1990, which earned her an Oscar. As a fiendish and mentally disturbed nurse who keeps in her home a renown author, of whom she is a fan, she is particularly credible.
To start the analysis of her chart, we concentrate on the general influence of the Grand Cross, i.e. the Ascendant in Virgo, in conjunction with Mars (even though in the 12th House), Jupiter in the 3rd House, the Moon posited on the angle of the Descendant, and lastly, a conjunction gathering Uranus and Mercury on the Midheaven.
Note that the Sun and Venus, albeit in conjunction with Mercury, are technically a little bit too far to be included.
What does the Grand Cross bring about? The impression can be summed up in the word "challenge". Indeed, this pattern combines two T-Squares; it has two oppositions and four squares, and even more if there are conjunctions like in this natal chart.
What is important here is using a huge energy to move forward without being overwhelmed by the tensions of the aspects at play, and least of all without giving up, which would be the easy way out. Luckily for Bates, fixed signs are not concerned, which offers some ease in the manner in which to cope with this challenge which generates so much dynamism.
Two Dominant Signs Which Could Have Made Her Shy
With such a chart, Bates certainly feels instinctively that she has inner contradictions that she can solve through action only. Since she has the Sun in Cancer and the Ascendant in Virgo, this core feature counterbalances the slightly overly reserved tendencies of these signs.
Cancer focuses on inner life, sometimes even on the past, and may be shy. A flaw it shares with Virgo, a sign constantly seeking perfection, and hesitating to claim its rights for fear of being unworthy. Besides, people marked by Virgo are sometimes more demanding with themselves than with others.
The subtlety of Bates' acting proves that she has an undeniable talent as a comedian. Nevertheless, more charismatic female colleagues may steal the show. For example, she was supplanted by the beautiful Michelle Pfeiffer, while Bates was initially chosen to play in Frankie and Johnny.
The Virgo Ascendant and the Intelligence to Know How to Adjust
If, as mentioned above, the Ascendant in Virgo does not give a diehard assurance, however, it enables the person to use his strategic intelligence. Therefore, in Bates' case, although she was never meant for leading lady roles, at least she managed not to be locked in the same type of characters.
She could have very well personified wicked or unbalanced women one after the other, but no. The public adopted her as a heroine in Fried green tomatoes, a film applauded by reviewers.
After that, she also made a lasting impression when she played the wealthy but unconventional Molly Brown in Titanic, in 1997, the best support of Rose and Jack. With her outspokenness, this role seemed cut out for her.
Planets Scrambling to Be the Dominant
In Bates' case, dominants too must be analyzed. Since several planets are in an angle, and with quite a tight orb, they must be evaluated in a different manner. Therefore, unsurprisingly, we find again Mercury, who is also the chart ruler, as well as Uranus, his "partner in crime", receiving a host of aspects (like Jupiter), both posited on the Midheaven.
These two planets give a free and original thinking process which shows in Bates' work. Jupiter in domicile, and the Moon, ruler of the Sun sign, complement the classification. Jupiter and Mercury account for Bates' bon viveur nature and ease of contact with the audience.
In short, Bates has very varied assets thanks to the planets and the signs in play.
The actress also successfully tried a hand at television, joining the casting of the cult series American Horror Story, in which she personified the serial killer Delphine Laurie. A sort of return to the roots (Misery), after all.
She added to this nice filmography the activities of director and of producer. Had we needed to get a confirmation that the tense aspects of a chart often turn out to be valuable, Bates is there to remind it.
Calm Regarding the 2020 Transits
In 2020, oddly, Bates is rather unaffected by big transits. She is well-nominated for the upcoming Oscars for supporting role in the film by Clint Eastwood, which is remarkable at 71.
However, she is not the favorite, and in this context, it is improbable that she will win a new statuette. But at least, she is not hindered by the current mundane tense aspects.
