If the weight of fears and torments is reflected in literary works, then it is not astonishing that Stephen King is such a prolific author. Since his beginnings in the 70's, he published over fifty novels under his name, and many others under a pen name; he also contributed as scriptwriter or film director. In all, he sold over 350 million books across the world. This is the basic portrait of this specialist in thriller, horror, and fantasy, among other genres.
The analysis of his natal chart, aiming at finding his driving force, reveals a few interesting features. With the Sun in Virgo and the Ascendant in Cancer, Stephen King is endowed with a vulnerable physique, an impressionable mindset, and probably a lack of self-confidence stemming from his deep sensitivity. The first difficult years indicate that his Virgo-Cancer nature compelled him to find in his inner world the responses needed to overcome his handicaps. At first sight whimsical, it is the imagination of Cancer which works as the primary outlet. Then Virgo, a quite different sign but also interiorised, gives the first impressions a cerebral dimension, as well as a great attention to detail, and a deep eagerness for research.
There is an outstanding configuration, which takes a preponderant place in the chart and seems to express both King's work and path: a kite pattern, in other words, a grand trine linking several planets and his Midheaven (the career) in Fire signs, which must be dissected carefully. First of all, the Pluto-Saturn conjunction in Leo, usually a generational aspect, plays a major role here, since it is in the 1st House, and it is part of the kite. The two planets, of notorious reputation, add their blended energies to the overall personality. They strengthen what is stated above and translate into one word: fears. Saturn indicates a loner, an estranged father, and the feeling to be fettered. Pluto, like the god of hell, sheds a more diabolical light, the fascination of evil, in fact. However, as we can see, although they are part of King's basic equation, he was able to use them positively to create, because they are harmoniously linked to the other planets and receive no harsh aspects. Actually, King discovered over time that he had at his disposal more numerous capacities of renewal and construction than he thought when he was young.
Getting back to the kite, let us consider the Moon in Sagittarius, who links Saturn and Pluto to his Midheaven, therefore the career. Furthermore, this position, in the 5th House, the House of leisure, creation, and entertainment, suggests that King managed to use the resources of his psyche and his instincts, and became immensely popular through his works. Since the Moon also rules the Ascendant, she brings about a huge imagination and a deserved success, because King behaves genuinely. Finally, the planet which dominates this configuration – as well as the whole chart – is of course Mercury, which is quite fitting for a writer. Mercury is in Libra, conjunct Neptune. Mercury is the focal planet which energises the pattern with two sextiles, one to the Saturn-Pluto conjunction, and the other, to the Moon. As a result, communication skills are twice highlighted. Mercury is not opposed to a planet, but to an axis, the Midheaven. But his position at dead of night, in the Northern hemisphere and dominating the chart, shows how intellectual work done in the shadows can lead to success. Although it may first seem surprising that this natal chart is not marked by Scorpio, it is a particularly striking example of a Mercury dominant, which must be analysed without overlooking his Neptune conjunction.
King's writing is based on a certain naturalism, since he likes to imagine very realistic characters, whose ordinary routine he depicts before cleverly throwing them (and us also!) into the supernatural. Besides, many of his heroes (or anti-heroes) have occult skills and play with evil, whether they are victims or persecutors. Everyone bears in mind scenes that are so brilliant that it is no wonder that they were turned into a wonderful film: the writer who became mad in Shining, played by a frightening Jack Nicholson, or Carrie, an unpopular student who takes revenge on everybody by provoking a real carnage.
Let us now consider the mark of Mars, synonymous with repressed violence, since he is posited in the 12th House. Mars is not to be overlooked either. In brief, it is fortunate that Stephen King had his pen to exorcise this violence, which he himself could have been a victim of! If his narrator talent works wonders, it is because he carries us away and always takes us back between two realms: the real one and the imaginary one, banality and demoniac phantasmagoria. Sometimes, we do not know any more whether he is in the Cancer register (remembrances, thoughts...), or in the Virgo register (meticulous report of what is occurring/has actually occurred).

In his life, Stephen King seems to hesitate between bizarre and ordinary poles. A faithful husband, and a "normal" father, he was tempted to stop writing after a serious accident in 1999. Since then, he resumed work at variable rhythms, depending on his health. He recently declared that he felt better, which enabled him to get back to his former production pace. Is it the consequence of progressed Uranus in the House of his Midheaven, in a long-lasting mundane square with Pluto, while Mars travels back and forth on his very important Mercury-Neptune natal conjunction? His last novel, Mr. Mercedes, a thriller in line with the direction recently taken by the Master of Horror, may transcend harsh aspects, one more!
