Ascendant in Scorpio: Extreme Sides

When this singer, author, and composer is mentioned, it is difficult to reach unanimity. Aside from her talent, Lana Del Rey is a divisive personality who enjoys maintaining the mystery. Determined, reluctant to follow the path set forth, she declared that she learned music by singing in churches, then mainly as an autodidact.

In her natal chart, we notice the prominence of the Water element which increases her sensitivity, with the Sun in early Cancer on the day of birth – therefore the summer solstice – and the Ascendant in Scorpio.

By nature, the Ascendant is what is perceived immediately when people meet someone for the first time, bearing in mind that Pluto, the ruler, is in domicile and in trine with the Sun. Pluto's note, including his dark facets, almost mystical in the case of Del Rey, as well as the taste for provocation, are strong. Indeed, as soon as she achieved success, she proposed a universe definitely of this type.

The title of her third album, Born to Die, which earned her worldwide fame, is quite suggestive in this regard.

She likes to get her inspiration from singers who wandered in limbo like Kurt Cobain (Nirvana) or Lou Reed. The next album is titled Ultraviolence, again a topic in which people marked by Scorpio are interested, without any fear. Let us also underline that when an adolescent, she stood up against almost everything. Her path is impacted by her early alcohol addiction, which was the reason why, when she was 15, she was sent to a strict boarding school, where she stayed during three years.

In this sign, the position of Saturn in the 1st House, near the Ascendant, turns Del Rey into a loner, a demanding, at times curt and glacial person eager for revenge. The square between Jupiter and her Ascendant increases her innate tendency to distinguish herself from others. In fixed signs, just like the natal Moon, this aspect may indicate a sometimes... stubborn character.

Planets in Cancer: Excellent Boosts for the Imagination

With the Sun in Cancer, one may believe that the beautiful Del Rey is happy to be in a world in which dream is constantly present. Thanks to her rather positive Mars, despite his opposition with Neptune, in conjunction with the Sun and therefore also in trine with Pluto and even with the Ascendant, Del Rey is endowed with energy and fighting spirit, and gives shape to her hopes. Thus, she gladly draws her inspiration from American myths having scents of nostalgia. In her clips, she pays homage to Hollywood's golden age with the idealized values of blues, of jazz, or of the folk culture.

In brief, she goes without inhibition where her soul takes her to, full of imagination.

Further in the sign, Mars in conjunction with Mercury (Mars is between Mercury and the Sun) enables Del Rey to express a broad range of emotions, particularly as an author, in her songs. This is all the more so that there is a wide sextile between Mercury and Venus.

The Moon in Leo: the Desire to Shine

The Moon, ruler of Cancer and therefore of the Sun-Mars-Mercury trio, is in Leo and gives Del Rey self-confidence. Everybody knows the charisma on which she relies naturally to be appreciated by her audience. Is she overdoing? It is hard to tell, but anyway, she owes it to her natal Moon, unpredictable, especially since she is connected to Uranus in Sagittarius.

In addition, there is a Grand Cross pattern in her sky map. It links the Moon to the Ascendant in Scorpio, Jupiter in Aquarius in the 3rd House (communication), and Venus in Taurus on the Descendant (relationships with other people). We shall get back to it later.

This configuration constitutes a reservoir of powerful energies with a big capacity for inertia, because they involve fixed signs. This may reinforce Del Rey's obsessive sides, since it provides few possibilities to find an outlet, at least through flexibility and adaptation when conflicting situations occur.

Venus Highlighted: Devouring Love Life

Fortunately for Del Rey, Venus in Taurus is strong, in domicile and at the same time in an angle. Venus allows to enjoy unreservedly the good things of life. And in particular in her romantic relationships, where love and the art to please play a major role. It must be observed too, for those versed in karmic astrology, that Venus is at the center of a conjunction linking the Black Moon and the North Node. In other words, as far as one appreciates this fatalistic (and bold) branch of astrology, Del Rey possesses every feature of a femme fatale (Lilith) who manages to bewitch people, and almost makes this the mission of her life (North Node).

This said, Venus being in conflict with both Jupiter and the Moon, nothing is easy. Del Rey herself acknowledged that her love life has not been a quiet river. Jupiter, exaggeration, and the Moon, moods, are not here to offer repose. One remarks a slight opposition from Saturn, which strengthens the trait.

The fact that she is living now with a policeman who suits her seems in any case to calm her down and to bring about the fulfillment she deserves.

Transits for Every Taste

In conformity with a quite complex chart, transits influencing her presently are varied. Lately, her planets in Cancer have been slightly challenged by several slow-moving planets transiting Capricorn, the opposite sign. Communication, above all, was not too smooth.

This year, 2021, her planets in fixed signs also undergo tensions caused by Jupiter and by Saturn in Aquarius. The relationship axis is involved, as well as Venus, who is going through the transit of Uranus. Perhaps her love affairs may not get stabilized soon.

Nevertheless, the return of Jupiter to his natal place may bring about opportunities when he will be well-supported (for instance when transiting planets highlight Air signs).

Lastly, Neptune in Pisces becomes in the long run auspicious to Del Rey's Sun-Mars-Mercury trio in Cancer and to Scorpio. Neptune provides a fruitful source of inspiration to her musical compositions, whatever happens.
