The Aries-libra Duality Highlights Relational Matters
It is quite rare that an astrological chart matches so well the psychological portrait of a celebrity. This is the case for John Lennon, founder of the mythical Beatles.
Today, even 38 years after his death, the artist remains one of the most striking personalities of the Peace and Love movement.
Born in Liverpool on 9 October 1940, Lennon had the Sun in Libra and the Ascendant in Aries. This polarity, this duality describes his psychological profile.
Indeed, Libra is the zodiacal sign which, more than any other sign, needs company in order to exist, whereas, on the contrary, Aries is the most individualistic sign.
Therefore, what does such a person look like? In his first contacts, at school, Lennon wanted to be the leader, as he declared several times in his interviews. His longing for love implied the capacity to attract followers.
Actually, throughout his life, Lennon experienced successive stages of passionate relationships, friendships or love affairs – with the other members of the group, especially Paul McCartney – as well as Yoko Ono. In his chart, the Sun is in an angle, on the cusp of the Descendant, conjunct the Moon's North Node (still in the 6th House). Moreover, Mars, ruler of the chart, is also posited in Libra and in the 6th House.
Despite this appearance of a bad boy, that he cultivated in early adolescence, then later of a nonconformist who did not care at all about his image, Lennon was always yearning to find a partner, a support, so as to exist and to shine.
When it did not work, he showed a quite uncouth facet, resorting to caustic humor in order to shock – in this regard, everyone remembers his famous sentence in 1963 at a concert attended by the Queen Mother and Princess Margaret: "On this next number, I want you all to join in. Would those in the cheap seats clap their hands? The rest of you can rattle your jewelry" – or he quarreled with those he loved. All this is very clearly displayed in his chart, which includes very nice aspects along with strong tensions, as we shall see.
Grand Trine and Numerous Talents
Now, let us analyze the out-of-sign Grand Trine which probably participated in Lennon's exceptional, not to say global, success. It links the Moon in Aquarius in the 10th House, Uranus in late Taurus in the 1st House, and Mars-Neptune in Libra in the 6th House. In this case, this configuration suggests a talent which is multifaceted.
Composer and singer with The Beatles (often in duet for both with McCartney), Lennon also engaged in writing. He explored several genres: caricatures and comics when a teenager, then satires, where his style and his sense of wordplay hit the target, but poetry too, collaborations on plays and novels.
He acknowledged that the way he worked was very erratic and scatter-brained. Nonetheless, without knowing how, it pleased the public, which is typical of a Moon-Neptune cooperation.
Moon in Aquarius in the 10th House and Pacifist Activism
It is most likely that the Grand Trine helped to arouse his interest in spirituality. With the Moon in Aquarius, albeit she is not his dominant planet, he could only be avant-garde and pacifist or even slightly eccentric.
Imagine, his anti-war and above all utopian hymn is his most emblematic creation in this regard: You may say I'm a dreamer, But I'm not the only one. I hope someday you will join us, And the world will be as one.
He campaigned against the Vietnam war in the late sixties and stood up for peace in the world in general. He was urged to do so by Yoko Ono, herself an influential artist, whose link can be understood through the Moon in Aquarius (a different or even misfit partner) and through the trine Venus sends to the Midheaven.
In astrology, Grand Trines are believed to make life easier, although sometimes to the detriment of fighting spirit. This is what Lennon partly experienced too. Since he did not really appreciate The Beatles' sudden fame, he resented mass hysteria and took refuge in heavy irony.
A Powerful T-square Indicating Poorly Channeled Emotions
As mentioned above, Lennon's astrological sky is not a bed of roses. He had to cope with a T-Square involving also the Moon, Mercury in the 7th House, and Pluto in the 5th House. This may point to some childhood trauma or to issues caused by his first romances, the Moon and Pluto being in the 5th House.
Apparently, the fear of losing the person loved or his mother may have spurred him to seek different means of expression, for his survival.
However, this configuration suggests that the way he tried to communicate might have been clumsy and violent. Despite his intention to spread kindness and gentleness into the world, he collided with tough opponents.
Thus, we know that he went through many problems with the US government, which decided to expel him in 1972. It was thanks to a petition signed by numerous personalities such as Bob Dylan, Fred Astaire, and even the mayor of New York, that he was finally allowed to stay.
Nevertheless, we all know the sad and paradoxical end of the artist who sang for a better world and who was murdered by a mentally disturbed man in 1980.
Today, Lennon's fans often honor his memory with flowers and candles at the Central Park Strawberry Fields memorial, especially on the anniversary of his death, on 8 December.
About Lennon's Death
When he passed away, on 8 December 1980 in New York, at 11:00 P.M. local time (9 December, 4:00 A.M. GMT), two major transits were affecting his chart. The mundane Jupiter-Saturn conjunction was exactly squaring the natal Midheaven, and Uranus was reaching his half-return (since Mars 1980, because it was his second passage, the most important one). The square Jupiter was sending to the Midheaven was exact to the minute. Nonetheless, was this double square commensurate with the attack which took Lennon's life? Certainly not, in our opinion.
Let us look at the solar arc directions. Except for the progressed Sun in opposition to natal Uranus, nothing significant could explain this event.
As for secondary directions, the Sun was in opposition to natal Uranus (of course) and Venus on the Descendant. The Jupiter-Saturn conjunction was this time in perfect opposition to natal Mercury. Here again, clues were too weak to explain such a tragedy.
As far as the solar revolution is concerned, we do not know whether Lennon was in New York or in Liverpool on 9 October 1980. Assuming that he was in Liverpool, there was a notable triple conjunction between the natal Ascendant, Uranus, and Mars in opposition to natal Uranus, which is a more significant clue.
The rest is less evident. A quadruple conjunction involving the Sun, the Moon, Lilith (both mean and true positions) and Pluto, ruler of the 8th House, was in exact opposition to the Ascendant (regardless of the place where Lennon spent his birthday). However, adepts of karmic astrology and of Lilith will certainly consider that this is a serious indication. It should be noted that Pluto exactly conjuncts the true position of Lilith (Astrotheme's default calculation).
In the natal chart, ominous dissonances stem from the opposition of Pluto, ruler of the 8th House as already mentioned, to the Moon (the beginning and the end of all things) at the top of the chart, ruler of the 4th House, in square to Mercury, all of them forming a T-Square. Astrologers using Arabic parts can observe that there is a square, almost exact to the minute, between Mars and the Part of Fortune.
To sum up, in Lennon's case, contrary to other personalities such as Patrick Dewaere, Coluche, Thierry Le Luron for example, sudden death was not explicitly indicated in the chart. This applies to a large number of brutal deceases, which is not a bad thing. Imagine the reverse, just for a second...
Astrology is not fatalistic, and humility is the rule when dealing with forecasts. The various techniques used provide hints, confirmed or not by facts, which is already very interesting, even though there still is a part of mystery as to how events may unfold. It is helpful to be informed, but at the same time, it is wise to put things into perspective, whether towards contentment or frustration.
Universality of the Characteristics of Aquarius and Neptune
In conclusion, this musical genius, a contrasted, extravagant, and endearing personage, was very sociable as well as critical and dissatisfied.
The Aries-Libra duality and the tense aspects of his chart explain these numerous facets.
The Grand Trine linking among other planets the Moon and Neptune enabled Lennon to have over the crowds an influence which still persists nowadays and which will probably last forever.
