Analysis of Anthony Hopkins's astrological chart

Astrology at the Service of Character Analysis

Daily news regularly puts the spotlight on all sorts of famous people. Although we are not fond of juicy information, we inevitably have an idea about a given political figure, a movie star, a Royal Highness, or a skilled sportsman.

Those well-known faces draw our interest and seem familiar to us, because we watch their successes or their setbacks day by day.

Astrology may also be considered as an interesting filter to better define their personality, and to guess whether the events they experience are confirmed by their planets' activities. Astrology does not reveal everything, of course, but using the dominants and other peculiarities of the natal chart, we can see whether the astrological portrait matches the collective image or offers unsuspected additional nuances.

After Lana Del Rey and Zendaya, here is an article about the charismatic Anthony Hopkins.

A Capricorn Improving Over Time

What an extraordinary personality has Anthony Hopkins, a man who still hits the deadlines at 83. As we shall see further down, he is in particular in the running for the Oscars next April. He is regarded as the typical incarnation of people born with the Sun in Capricorn, for whom the best keeps on occurring late in life, like the ripe fruits of a harvest.

For this British actor, director, scriptwriter, and composer, the sign of Capricorn is prevailing in many respects. Indeed, in his sky map, there is a triple Venus-Mercury-Sun conjunction, the last two planets being really very closed to one another. In addition, the position of the Ascendant in the same sign increases this emphasis. Thus, there are no less than four personal objects, which is quite rare.

In the case of this double Capricorn (this is how people having the Ascendant and the Sun in the same sign are referred to), the inner self, the willpower, and what is shown to others, i.e. the appearance, share identical characteristics. It is even more interesting to underline this fact that, owing to a secretive Sun in the 12th House (as well as Mercury), we are dealing with someone very modest who keeps his feelings to himself, whether they are intense, deep, or not.

The triple conjunction, which may be joyful in another sign or another House, takes here a spiritual dimension. There is a strong need for solitude and introspection, deepened by the Capricorn-12th House blend.

Strangely for an actor, Hopkins does not enjoy being in the limelight, and he felt no desire or craving to shine on stage. As a result, he imposed himself differently, with a very British restraint, a singular quality proper to him, which perhaps decided the Queen to ennoble him even more easily.

A T-square Increasing the Density of the Natal Moon and the Personal Planets

Does it mean that the crowded 12th House only reinforces the capacity to cope serenely with solitude and ordeals? No, because not everything is easy in the chart. Indeed, the square of Saturn and that of Neptune must be reckoned with. They form a T-square, the targets of which are the natal Moon and the Mercury-Venus duet. The Sun could almost be added "by capillary action", since the group of personal planets includes successive conjunctions.

As Saturn attacks the Moon, Mercury, and Venus - the latter being strengthened by a tight orb - he gives seriousness and vulnerability to anything related to emotions, feelings and private matters.

The comedian is at the same time tough, resistant and mighty owing to his Sun, his willpower, his ambitions, and the rational side of his temperament; he is weakened when he is touched, as soon as certain chapters of his personal life are discussed.

Here, affectivity is discreet and hidden; whatever happens, nobody can suspect that Hopkins is undermined by inner storms when he undergoes love setbacks or when he is overwhelmed by intense emotions. He is a warrior without soft spot (the Sun in Capricorn in sextile with Mars and in trine with Uranus), with a somehow tender and delicate heart (the Moon and Venus challenged).

Neptune adds complexity to this aspect of things, as if it were not enough. His square with the Moon brings about painful sensitivity, because it acts like an antenna which draws attention on depressing or frustrating situations. It causes confusion and through it, emotional insecurity.

Saturn in square with Venus (with a very tight and therefore potent orb) brings about the fear to surrender to sentimental urges, as if by letting oneself go, by giving too much of oneself, he risked losing the loved one, and as a result, he would suffer. There is also a quincunx with Pluto, which reinforces this vulnerability.

It must be remembered that this configuration means challenges. It exacerbates the tension of anything concerning personal life, the verb to love, emotions and feelings. This probably contributes to give the actor a quite special aura made of concentrated denseness and power that can be perceived in many of his films. This is all the more so that, in parallel, the other fields of life are marked by true charisma and a form of invincibility.

A Water Grand Trine Protecting the Social and Professional Destiny.

Although these first features constitute the main dominants, additional peculiarities must be observed in this sky map. To begin with, the Saturn-Pluto duet in good aspect with the Midheaven.

The Water Grand Trine pattern (sensitivity) is even more remarkable that it links the ruler of Capricorn (Saturn) to the ruler of the Midheaven (Pluto) and to the already mentioned Midheaven (the career) in Scorpio.

We see that here the two distant planets support Hopkins' social and professional ambitions. A special mention must be made for Pluto in an angle, in the 7th House, which is highly revealing. Indeed, Hopkins made a name for himself mainly with roles of villains or of personages facing hardship: The Bunker, recounting the last days of Hitler, The Fall of Mussolini, Elephant Man... till the most famous of his parts, that of the cannibalistic killer Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs. This film, the 30th anniversary of which is celebrated in 2021, is a reference in the whole world and won the major Oscars of those days.

Who could be surprised that Hopkins, whose fascinating way to personify a psychopath gives goose bumps, achieved this? This is actually the effect of Pluto in the 7th House, a mysterious planet connected with hell and evil. And of course, with the emotional denseness of the comedian we just talked about.

If it is necessary to distinguish the actor from his character, it should be remembered that this is how Hopkins experienced this potential of energy and of domination which might have been very unsettling in an ordinary life, but which here was able to propel his career to the heights.

A Constantly Astonishing Comedian

Inspiration also comes from Neptune, in exact trine (there are many in this chart) with the Earth Ascendant. Possibilities for achievement are great and besides, Hopkins has multiplied artistic adventures. As a painter, his works have often been exhibited successfully. He is a talented pianist too who has recorded several albums.

Let us look at Uranus in the 3rd House who forms another quite interesting trine with the Sun, and who is linked by a nice sextile to Mars, himself in sextile with the Sun as indicated above. This minor triangle endows Hopkins with lightning speed and efficiency when he communicates and when he presents himself to the world.

Despite the importance of slow-moving planets in the chart, it must be noted that Hopkins can rely as well on Jupiter in the 1st House who, although not in an angle, describes a person full of self-confidence embarking on new projects with enthusiasm. Moreover, Jupiter rules the Moon in Sagittarius, which agrees with this meaning.

The natal Moon, notwithstanding her vulnerabilities, just like Jupiter, are allies who have helped Hopkins build an international career. Thus, he acquired the American citizenship without having denied his British origins.

Current and Upcoming Meaningful Transits

As far as transits are concerned, Hopkins was particularly challenged during these last years, and he still is. The influence of slow-moving planets in Capricorn probably strengthened his qualities of seriousness, deep commitment, and his capacity for healthy aging.

In 2020, his Ascendant was the backdrop to the great triple conjunction of the beginning of the year. In addition, Hopkins is presently going through the return of Uranus, who is activating a quite sensitive point for him, since we have explained the link between this planet and the natal Sun. As a result, he will surprise us. It must be noted that he is in the running for the Oscars for The Father, which is taking place soon, on 25 April 2021.

In the course of the year 2022 and in 2023, transiting Pluto will be in opposition with his natal position, near the Descendant (House of relationships). Not all of us will experience this type of transit, on the one hand because it occurs late in life but also because it depends on the speed of Pluto, who may stay a changeable duration in a sign. For Hopkins, because, as explained earlier, his roles are influenced by the most distant planet and by its symbolism, it is certain that this transit will not go unnoticed. Perhaps he will offer us a last big transformation while enhancing even more his very strong personality, although it does not need it.
