The Sun and Saturn in Dynamic Aspect

Astrological aspects: general introduction

The analysis of a natal chart must be as comprehensive as possible. This is what we do as we make our personalized reports available in our e-shop. It must be borne in mind that many astrologers concentrate on the interpretation of planets in signs and in houses, and of angles, without paying enough attention to aspects. On the contrary, we believe that when aspects involve personal planets between themselves or slow-moving planets, they are of fundamental importance. In all cases, they are at least as significant as the Ascendant or the Sun. This is particularly relevant when the orb is tight (i.e. when the aspect is exact). This is the criterion we apply for this new series of articles which describe how well-known personalities experience certain aspects.

The Sun and Saturn in conflicting aspect

In the natal chart, the link between the Sun and Saturn tells us that we are dealing with a key aspect influencing the construction of the personality.

The Sun represents our ego, our willpower, our need to assert ourselves, the expression of our deep individuality, our strongest motivations, and the way we shine.

Saturn, for his part, symbolizes structures, limits, maturity, order, perseverance, the share of seriousness that we have in us, our capacity to take on responsibilities, and our ambition in some cases. Because he is related to authority in general, Saturn may also be associated with the role of the father or, in any case, of a father-figure.

Since Saturn has a difficult reputation, the tie between the Sun, self-assertion, and Saturn, and the master of time implies numerous challenges, including delays in the objectives we have set ourselves, as well as an inferiority complex problem to solve, a major self-confidence issue, whether it is concealed or not from the members of our inner circle. In short, inhibition or, now and then, as a reaction, excess.

More than other aspects, this one affects all areas of life. To face it demands a deep evolution, and the person concerned must be very patient when confronting the various hurdles arising on his way.

Nevertheless, what Nietzsche wrote totally applies to astrological charts. When a Sun-Saturn harsh aspect is eventually under control, the personality becomes stronger, wiser, and more solar, blending the qualities of these two planets, even though, beforehand, such results have required energy and effort.

With this configuration, it is necessary, for instance, to struggle against constraints in general, and to take a stand on one's environment rules. Young people, in particular, are exposed to this kind of difficulties with their parents – especially the father – then by extension, with any substitute figure: teachers at school, bosses at work, hierarchy, or the State and the administration.

Emotional life is not spared. It must be underlined that one tends to shift the responsibility for all inter-personal relationships on others, believing that the blame is on one's partner, one's friends, one's colleagues, or anyone who causes hindrances, sets a pace and rules that one does not always understand and that one finds difficult to live with.

In a couple, the person having this configuration may feel that the partner is somehow severe or in some cases, she may consider that he is not up to it, because in a female chart, the Sun symbolizes the husband, in addition to her own personality.

With squares (90°), clashes may be quite violent. Each partner digs in his/her heels and strives to impose his/her views on the other one. Since Saturn is connected with the notion of time, quarrels tend to occur according to transits, as long as the person is not fully prepared. Unlike Uranus, who decides rapidly, Saturn makes things last. In this case, the situation may grow worse for many years.

With oppositions, (180°), one spends one's time hesitating over how to express one's viewpoints. One may impose oneself autocratically, rigidly, and conservatively, or step back because one feels crippled by powerful inhibitions.

In summary, to manage to calm down these two planets, when they are in an inauspicious aspect, often constitutes the challenge of a lifetime. However, this ordeal may tremendously enrich the person having this kind of aspects, and one will achieve some degree of wisdom, once the issue is entirely understood.

In order to better explain this aspect, we are mentioning several well-known personalities. This article deliberately isolates the aspect (the square, here, with four examples, because in our opinion, it is more striking than the opposition) so as to better describe them. For this reason, it claims on no account to be a psychological analysis of the celebrity in question, for whom many other articles are available in the "Focus" section.

It is possible to find thousands of other horoscopes having the Sun in aspect of square or opposition with Saturn (or any other aspects), with the online tool search. The planets, positions in sign and in house as well as the orb, are configurable.

Catherine Middleton

In the natal chart of the Princess of Wales, spouse of William, Prince of Wales, the Sun is in Capricorn and in the 5th House, in square with Saturn in Libra and in the 3rd. This solar position already indicates a taste for conservative hobbies, which is, therefore, completely in line with her functions and her role.

The same holds true too for her vision for education. She is probably a mother who advocates discipline, and gives the image of a career woman while taking on responsibilities in other areas.

Nevertheless, it is most likely that she has a hard time keeping such total control, for Saturn plays the troublemaker. He is all the more powerful that here, he rules the Sun.

Thus, Saturn suggests that Middleton's communication is somehow stiff despite her undeniable kindness (the 3rd House and the sign of Libra).

Her apparent self-control and her demure behavior certainly hide a lack of self-confidence. Nonetheless, this is understandable if one imagines the weight of her personal destiny and the huge constraints that this means.

Fortunately, she has other assets enabling her to face those demands, such as an extremely good Mars, energy, in the 3rd House, communication, in trine with the Mercury-Venus pair, mental agility and charm.

François Mitterrand

The French president, who died on 8 January 1996, remains a prominent figure of the 5th Republic. It was the first time that a representative of the Socialist Party had reached the summit of the State in the Hexagon.

Furthermore, François Mitterrand served two terms, which means fourteen years in power, a record. Of course, we do not intend to carry out a full assessment of his terms in office, but instead, to highlight the most striking events related to the aspect we are interested in.

Actually, the latter corresponds very well to the general impression that Mitterrand gives regarding the way he exercised power. The Sun in Scorpio is the signature of an ambitious person who spins his web in the dark, focused on his goal. We all know that Mitterrand was an unparalleled strategist able to enter into difficult alliances, or even to betray, in order to efficiently achieve his aim.

The uncompromising facet of the Sun has probably been activated by the square from Saturn in the 10th House (career, social standing).

Mitterrand was born in a middle-class and catholic provincial family. In his youth, he undoubtedly suffered from what he felt was a narrow environment, a typical feature of a harsh Sun-Saturn aspect. Efforts to get out of this and to express his own identity have taken a long, a very long time.

His ascent, thwarted by General de Gaulle, a much more flamboyant rival, at least before Mitterrand too rose to supreme power, has been painstaking. Nonetheless, Mitterrand managed to patiently bide his time.

In 1981, eventually, he was elected, supported by a "pink tide" which aroused huge hopes in France. But his economic recovery plan failed. Investment money left the country, and unemployment became a growing concern.

Two years later, Mitterrand had to implement urgent changes and take the "turn of austerity". Anyone studying astrology is aware that these words totally match the universe of Saturn when he is uncontrolled.

Afterwards, Mitterrand had to give in again and to accept a political cohabitation, a new concept which forced him to work with a prime minister belonging to the opposing party, as early as 1986.

Despite all this, he was re-elected by the French in 1988 with flying colors.

Oprah Winfrey

The flamboyant presenter and producer Oprah Winfrey has the Sun in Aquarius, which fits her original ascent very well. In the United States, it is a quite atypical feat to make one's fortune when one is a black person coming from a disadvantaged background, while working in the very tricky realm of media and famous people.

In Winfrey's case, one may even wonder whether the well-known inferiority complex and the doubts peculiar to the tension between Saturn and the Sun would not explain rather well this irresistible need to take revenge on destiny.

As we have seen, this harsh aspect undermines self-confidence and brings about inhibition. It may also provoke a reverse excess, like in a compensating pendulum.

In Winfrey's chart, Saturn in the 10th and in Scorpio describes her relentless will to impose herself socially. Undoubtedly, she has come across many rivalries, and she often pocketed an affront.

Luckily for her, the Sun in the 2nd House (the money one earns oneself), receives auspicious aspects such as a nice trine with Jupiter, which enables her to counterbalance the brakes of Saturn.

Henceforth, she has demonstrated her worth only because of the simpe fact that her success is long-lasting, and that she has become an icon for numerous females. Not to mention that she is one of the richest journalists in the world, with a wealth amounting to almost three billion dollars.

Jane Fonda

Jane Fonda / Author : Georges Biard 05-2018 / CC BY-SA (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0)

Today, the American actress Jane Fonda still remains a superstar who does not need to prove anything. However, in addition, it must be remembered that she is the daughter of a legendary father in Hollywood, Henry Fonda.

In her natal chart, the mark of this parentage is rather clear, with the Sun in Sagittarius and in the 11th House. The horizon lines were wide open, and she was immersed in the cinema industry (in analogy with this House) in which she benefited from certain alliances.

Nevertheless, the square from Saturn in Pisces and in the 3rd points to the weight of her education and all the difficulties she experienced as she grew up in the shade of a father who was often described as being emotionally distant.

In several interviews, she declared that she was only seeking one thing, his affection and his recognition.

Moreover, Fonda personifies the principle of a woman who had to adopt values which did not suit her, and which cost her a lot (2nd House). She confided about her father that he was her only major influence. For him, she became a tomboy, pretending to be indifferent to the blows and bruises that she received. She had to be brave and tough, so that he could love her.

It seems that she suffered a lot from the discrepancy between the image of the father, that she got through his films (Saturn in Pisces), and reality, where he was unable to express his emotions.

We could have bet it, but it so happened that Henry Fonda, a cold seducer, also had natal Saturn in Pisces, in loose square with his own Sun!
