Mars and Neptune in tense aspect

Astrological aspects: general introduction

The analysis of a natal chart must be as comprehensive as possible. This is what we do as we make our personalized reports available in our e-shop. It must be borne in mind that many astrologers concentrate on the interpretation of planets in signs and in houses, and of angles, without paying enough attention to aspects. On the contrary, we believe that when aspects involve personal planets between themselves or slow-moving planets, they are of fundamental importance. In all cases, they are at least as significant as the Ascendant or the Sun. This is particularly relevant when the orb is tight (i.e. when the aspect is exact). This is the criterion we apply for this new series of articles which describe how well-known personalities experience certain aspects.

Mars and Neptune in challenging aspect

In this article, we examine the tense aspect, sometimes called the dynamic, negative, or challenging aspect, between Mars and Neptune. These are two celestial bodies with no apparent common points, yet their interaction is notably intriguing.

Mars, as we know, rules Aries. It aligns with the element of Fire and initiates the action of the first zodiac sign.

In an astrological chart, Mars describes our way of acting, our combativeness, our courage, our energy reserve, and our spirit of initiative, but also, in some cases, our aggressiveness, impatience, and lack of tact.

Neptune, on the other hand, rules Pisces, the last sign. In harmony with this sign, Neptune embodies the principle of consubstantiality and aims for a general merging into a greater whole.

In everyday life, this planet describes our ideals, our great dreams, our human or artistic sensitivity, our imagination, our ability to sense the zeitgeist, and our intuition. When poorly aspected, Neptune leads to illusions, deceptions, and various kinds of disorder.

When these two planets are connected by a challenging major aspect such as an afflicted conjunction, a square, or an opposition, individuals affected feel internal tensions between their dreams and their ability to realize them.

One must be cautious of both oneself and others, as it becomes difficult to assess reality as it is. At the same time, those with ill intentions may take advantage of this vulnerability.

It is common to be deceived by false promises or to underestimate the challenges that will arise. Poorly managed, this aspect can lead to significant confusion, hesitations, or mistakes that can be costly and generate bitterness or anger, often incomprehensible to others.

Fortunately, emphasizing Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn) or having a strong Saturn can mitigate the issues of this delicate combination.

Regardless, becoming aware of this dynamic can help avoid pitfalls, and like all aspects of tension, maturity and experience are there to transform this configuration into an advantage in life, by managing to filter the positive aspects of these two planets for beneficial use.

In order to better explain this aspect, we are mentioning several well-known personalities (here Steve Jobs (opposition), Isabelle Adjani (square), Steve McQueen (opposition), and Barbra Streisand (square)).

This article deliberately isolates the aspect so as to better describe them. For this reason, it claims on no account to be a psychological analysis of the celebrity in question, for whom many other articles are available in the "Focus" section.

It is possible to find thousands of other horoscopes having Mars in tense aspect with Neptune (or any other aspects), with the online tool search. The planets, positions in sign and in house as well as the orb, are configurable.

Steve Jobs

It's not an exaggeration to say that the company founded by Steve Jobs, Apple, has changed the way we live.

The man, a prodigy, indeed had the visionary talent of a Neptune ruling his Sun in Pisces. He was genuinely driven by the desire to provide solutions for the community, with a great concern for the ergonomics and aesthetic aspects of his technological products.

However, his Mars in Aries and in the 8th house opposed his Neptune in Libra and in the 2nd sector. Having grown up in a relatively unstable family, Steve Jobs had to channel his frustrations into his studies and quickly developed a passion for computing.

His fiery Mars and his perfectionism probably explain why he was perceived by some of his colleagues and associates as aggressive, irascible, or at least difficult to live with. Here we can see the conflict between the ideal (Neptune) he sought in his personal goals, and the difficulty of achieving them through action (Mars).

The world remembers the entrepreneurial spirit he instilled in his companies and his public appearances, where he was awaited like a messiah.

A rare form of cancer took him at only 56 years old, creating a global wave of emotion.

Although he was able to partially organize the future projects of Apple, we will never know what Steve Jobs could have imagined for the future, especially with the advent of artificial intelligence. This sense of incompleteness takes nothing away from his genius and his demonstrated ability to think outside the box.

Isabelle Adjani

With her ethereal beauty, Isabelle Adjani embodies a certain image of gentleness associated with her Sun sign, Cancer. However, her Aries Ascendant grants her undeniable energy, influenced by Mars, the ruler of her chart, which also resides in Cancer in her fourth house, alongside Uranus, indicating unstable roots.

The star evidently suffered in her childhood from a sense of unease linked to her father's Algerian roots, which were poorly accepted by her own mother, who was of Bavarian German origin.

Mars in square to Neptune in Libra, positioned in the seventh sector, has primarily influenced her relationships and contracts. Adjani has indeed gone through numerous romantic disappointments and often spoke of her illusions and the futile sacrifices she made for disappointing or elusive partners.

Although she has always protected her two children, keeping discreet about the problems encountered with their respective fathers, the same was not true with Jean-Michel Jarre, where the couple's breakup was splashed across the front page of a famous French magazine.

Furthermore, this aspect also played a role in certain financial and legal troubles, notably when she was accused of tax fraud in 2023. The star appealed the judgment, denying any wrongdoing on her part.

Steve McQueen

Steve McQueen / Unknown author before 1977 / Public domain

Steve McQueen, often referred to as the "King of Cool," epitomized the combined forces of Mars and Neptune, melding martial strength with Neptunian allure.

A Hollywood icon, Steve McQueen embodied Martian strength in many aspects of his character but also the qualities of Neptune, earning him the nickname "King of Cool" early in his career. He exuded a pleasing humor then, blending a touch of cynicism, casualness, and nonchalance in a delightful way.

Indeed, his astrological chart highlights a dynamic relationship between Mars in Pisces and Neptune in Virgo. The most striking observation is the presence of Mars, ruler of his Aries Sun, in a water sign ruled by Neptune.

Often, opposition in life manifests as a swing between two forces. When these forces share no common points, they generate internal conflicts within the personality.

His childhood was difficult, if not terrible, as young Steve was raised by a great uncle after being abandoned by his two alcoholic parents. This genetic legacy likely influenced his own later struggles.

Yet, his sensitive temperament and mysterious charisma easily captivated those around him, allowing him to escape a life of delinquency by embracing a career in cinema. This instinctual choice was the right one, even though he had to wait before finding success.

By the end of the 1960s, he finally became a global star, thanks to memorable roles and a unique presence.

Moreover, he managed to incorporate his passion for car racing and his taste for risk into his film projects. However, this energetic Mars and unclear Neptune in the second sector had various and even dramatic consequences.

As he matured, Steve McQueen's character was perceived as violent, uncontrollable, and highly competitive. Simultaneously, the role of Neptune explains that Steve McQueen struggled with addiction for much of his life, particularly with alcohol and drugs.

Lee H. Katzin's film "Le Mans," released in 1971, also illustrates the potential pitfalls of this conflictual aspect. The shooting turned out to be catastrophic, causing injuries, tensions within the team, and ultimately leading to the bankruptcy of the production company. Although the film remains iconic, the behind-the-scenes experience was far from restful.

Barbra Streisand

Barbra Streisand / Unknown author 1965 / Public domain

Actress, director, and globally renowned singer Barbra Streisand has captured the public's heart with her exceptional ability to connect deeply and immediately with her audience.

Her swift success contrasts with a challenging childhood marked by her father's death and her mother's indifference.

By immersing herself in the world of fiction, Barbra found her calling. Her numerous projects well illustrate her Mars in Gemini's voraciousness, still conjoined with Jupiter.

However, the square between Mars and Neptune in Virgo, a sign where the planet is in exile, showed her the downside. From seeing herself as an ugly duckling to a seductress, accumulating often unstable liaisons, Barbra Streisand experienced decades of ephemeral and difficult loves.

She humorously recounted some bizarre episodes in her autobiography, such as when Andre Agassi had to hide in a trunk to get to their secret meetings.

To illustrate the contradiction between these two planets, this quote from the actress speaks for itself: "I was a personality before I became a person—I am simple, complex, generous, selfish, unattractive, beautiful, lazy, and motivated."

Additionally, her Neptune in the 6th house, that of everyday health, caused her to suffer from tinnitus, ringing in her ears that is very bothersome, especially for an artist. The possible price of her golden voice.
