Five Planetary Pairs Conjunct: Uncommon Chart
Amy Winehouse' chart holds a very interesting potential. Some aspects are nice, while some others are highly-tensed. This proves that having an exceptional destiny is possible despite premature death.
The first fact to be noted is that the ten planets of the chart come in pairs of conjunctions, an astounding configuration because it is a rare phenomenon. In astrological order, we find Mars and Venus in Leo, the Sun and Mercury in Virgo, Saturn and Pluto in Libra, and Scorpio, Jupiter, and Uranus in Sagittarius, and lastly, Neptune and the Moon in Sagittarius and Capricorn.
There are no rules for such a layout in a chart. However, we shall try to carry out an analysis. For easy reference, we shall delineate the duets following the zodiac order instead of the order of decreasing importance.
It must be borne in mind that the conjunction implies a blend of the energy of the planets involved, and that this aspect always indicates the beginning of a cycle between the said planets.
The seat of honor is occupied by the most flamboyant couple formed by Venus and Mars in Leo. It is certainly the real driving force behind Winehouse's career. The two planets invariably give distinctive sex-appeal when they join forces. In Winehouse's case, the fact that the conjunction is in Leo provides even more brilliant possibilities.
Her extremely theatrical look may also be attributed to this Mars-Venus aspect. Indeed, the star's main trademarks often consists of a "beehive" hairdo, eyes contoured with an over-thickened Egyptian-like line, a modern Cleopatra, a mini-skirt, and fishnet stockings. Most of the time dressed in charcoal black, her favorite color, she sometimes wears fire hues, scarlet red and bright yellow. It is obvious that Winehouse is not the guarantee for traditional and perfect good taste. Nevertheless, her style hits the target, particularly with maestros Karl Lagerfeld or Jean-Paul Gaultier.
Next, we have Winehouse's Sun in Virgo. The tie with Mercury highlights a type of intellect specific to the sixth sign. First nuance, beneath the uninhibited show-woman facet, the British composer-singer suffered from deep emotional insecurity. An immoderate perfectionist, she did not boast so much about her truly special talent, and constantly strove to do better.
The third duet of planets, Pluto-Saturn, sharply contrasts with the above-mentioned aspects. Owing to its infamous reputation, the conjunction in the 6th House exposes to slides having far-reaching consequences. However, it endows with resistance to pain, especially because it is supported by the Moon, and with a wide orb, by Mars and Venus. Her famous song, Rehab, launched as a joke, echoed her experience. She turned her personal misfortune into universal reference.
The Sign of Sagittarius's International Scope
Then there is the Jupiter-Uranus pair in the 6th House too, but in Sagittarius. It may explain that Winehouse enjoyed such a quick and meteoric rise. Her second album, Back to Black, opened the doors to glory when she was not yet 25. Her songs moved a wide audience (Sagittarius) as well as the critics. She walked away with several awards among the most prestigious ones – the Grammy Awards. She sold millions of copies of her records. There is an exact quintile (a harmonious aspect of 72°) between these planets and the Sun-Mercury couple.
The last conjunction is perhaps that which draws most attention. Neptune, planet often highlighted in musicians' chart, is in conjunction with the Moon. This duet may be credited with Winehouse's haunted voice that many people have compared to great jazz singers like Nina Simone. This asset influences other people (the 7th House), and therefore, her public. Obviously, we could have thought that the danger of emotional overflows might have been controlled by the Moon in Capricorn. This did not occur, and we may see in it some solitude affecting the lady who, paradoxically, attracted the crowds.
Clash Between the Ascendant, the Sun, and the Moon
The luminaries (the Sun and the Moon) are caught in a T-square with the Gemini Ascendant and mutable signs, i.e. Virgo and Sagittarius. This means that there were considerable tensions between the three most important components of the personality. The T-Square brings about inner frictions between the Moon's idealism, the Sun's meticulousness in Virgo, and Mercury' misleading light-hearted appearance. This results in intense instability, since Mercury and Neptune are involved in the configuration.
It must be acknowledged that Winehouse was very resourceful. For example, she negotiated her first big salary with the label Island Universal when she was just 19. She was supported in all this by her Gemini facet.
Besides, the Ascendant produced an appearance which is inconsistent with Winehouse's ego. When a child, she had problems concentrating at school. She kept on trying many activities, became a "showbiz" columnist for the World Entertainment News Network, and a singer in a jazz orchestra. Simultaneously, she founded her own rap group and already started to compose music.
Tragic Death Cause by Fateful Lunar Nodes?
We could have mentioned the North Node-Ascendant pair in Winehouse's chart. It forms a sixth conjunction, bearing in mind that for this, one must be interested in so-called karmic influences, and therefore, to be considered with much caution.
The conjunction is active regardless of the method of calculation used for the North Node, i.e. the true or mean positions, which sometimes differ by over 20°. This is not the case here.
Such a configuration, referring to "life purpose", is interpreted as an incitement to impose one's personality. In the sign of Gemini, this happens through communication; given the link with the Ascendant, vitality and character traits are strengthened. Winehouse was prompted to become autonomous, to take initiatives, and to display courage and determination. May be slightly too much.
When she died on 23 July 2011, she was under the influence of a special transit. Indeed, for the first time, the lunar nodes axis was back in reversed position compared to the natal position. Moreover, mundane Mars was in exact opposition, in conjunction with the natal North Node, and in exact square with the Sun-Mercury duet, the latter being the ruler of the Ascendant, i.e. health. This is actually the only significant transit of this fateful day.
Regarding symbolic directions, we observe that at the moment of death, progressed Mars was in exact square with the Ascendant. The Venus-Mars pair reached the natal Sun-Mercury duet. This is the second strong feature, again connected to the natal Ascendant and the natal North Node. As for solar arc directions, the square is even tighter (barely minutes of orb), which suggests, perhaps, that the solar arc direction method is better than the symbolic direction method.
As we continue to look for astrological causes of death on that day, there is an almost exact Uranus-Mars square in the secondary directions chart, a third forecasting method. Moreover, Mercury sends an exact square to the Moon, the ruler of the progressed chart.
Some observers noticed that Winehouse thus enlarged the "27 Club", hinting at several highly-talented artists like for instance Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Brian Jones, Kurt Cobain, or Robert Johnson, who all died at 27. Based on the precision of those transits and directions, certain astrologers may believe that they are the mark of people who struggled until the end against their demons. They were more powerful than Winehouse, despite all the other assets which might have saved her.
