The Cost of an Ambiguous Sun-venus Duet
The natal chart of the late diva Whitney Houston is extremely nice. The sky map displays a blend of auspicious and taxing aspects which certainly explain her outstanding and at the same tragic life.
The singer, so talented in this area that she was called "The Voice", was a real queen; she was born with the Sun in Leo and supported by Venus in a Fire sign in conjunction with the Sun. Besides, the planet of love and beauty is involved in a configuration that we shall discuss again.
Born in a family having numerous musicians, Houston was very young when she followed in the footsteps of her mother, Cissy Houston, a renowned chorister. This was why the mother was well-placed to notice the extraordinary voice of her daughter, whom she naturally encouraged and allowed to pursue her rightful ambitions. Firstly, this implied a few modeling activities – the image of beauty and poise dear to the sign of Leo – so as to make a breakthrough more rapidly. Here are the gifts of Venus, bearing in mind that Houston was nonetheless ambivalent, as we shall see.
Indeed, posited in the 6th House, the pair of planets forms a Fire Grand Trine with the Midheaven in Sagittarius (professional destiny, foreign matters) and a beautiful Moon-Jupiter conjunction in AriesAries Owing to the influence of the Sun and of Venus on Houston's career, it was logical that love was one of the main topics of her songs.
However, the said Sun-Venus conjunction is also in square with Neptune in the 8th House and in opposition with Saturn in the 12th. It is clear that these two slow-moving planets join forces to tip the scales toward disaster and disappointment despite, once again, the brilliant facets of her existence. Saturn for difficulties and health issues, and Neptune for addiction to alcohol, drugs, and an indefinable but recurring malaise.
We also note that the conjunction is in the 6th House, which prevented Houston from falling too young in the trap of choosing the easy way out. This is always possible when the Sun is in Leo and there is a Grand Trine. Houston had a sense of ethics, of work, of effort, and of perseverance; she gave the impression that she was at the service of God, and later on, of her audience.
The Moon in Aries Accounts for Precocious Success
Regarding precocity and good luck, Houston could rely on the qualities of swiftness, willpower, and the opportunities of the Moon-Jupiter conjunction in the 1st House. At 20, Houston persuaded Clive Davis, one of the biggest American producers, to trust her. Her first album was enough to prove her right, since almost 25 million copies were sold throughout the world, which never happened to a near-beginner.
Immediately idolized by all sorts of public, it seemed that young Houston was set to experience a fairy tale. The eighties and nineties were a long succession of events confirming her great dispositions.
The Ascendant in Pisces Exacerbates Sensitiveness
Unwillingly, Houston probably drew crowds with her indescribable grace and the tone of her so bright and powerful voice.
More than once, she demonstrated in her career that she was concerned about the fate of the poorest, and this was corroborated by her interpretations. She never hit the target better than when she sang about unhappy or impossible love, like for example in the soundtrack of the film The Bodyguard, a successful romantic comedy in which she co-starred with Kevin Costner in 1992. She has devoted her person and her time to charity work.
The Ascendant in Pisces and its ruler Neptune, rather challenging and in the 8th House, have led her to misuse the traits of Pisces: alcohol, escapism and hard drugs, perhaps all of them simultaneously. Unfortunately, her death at 48, by drowning in her bathtub – at least according the official statement – caused by these abuses, is deeply symbolic of the configuration.
Mercury Hindered in Virgo and Painful Attacks
In the 7th House, the Mercury-Pluto conjunction – with Uranus nearby, in conjunction too – has prompted Houston to accept a frustrating and troubled emotional life and love affairs. In addition, Mercury in an angle and in domicile indicates a perfectionist mindset vulnerable to criticism.
Regrettably for her, after a splendid youth and two decades of achievements, the years 2000 represented mostly a long and slow descent into hell. She gradually became less successful, and health issues thwarted her projects (the 6th-12th axis is tenanted by the Sun-Venus conjunction in opposition with Saturn, as we mentioned earlier).
Houston's gorgeous voice betrayed her little by little. At the same time, she remained under the heel of her husband, Bobby Brown, and of a violent and disparaging bond which she can hardly get rid of.
Bogged down in her addiction predicament and a tough divorce finalized in 2007, Houston became the shadow of her former self. Furthermore, she was cornered by a few financial setbacks – which is particularly exacting for a Sun in Leo in terms of pride. Several months previously, the singer had to cede the manor in Atlanta, her main residence, to the tax authorities.
However, during the 2009-2011 period, fleeting success was back. But on 11 February 2012, in the afternoon, Houston was found unconscious by her bodyguards in the bathtub of the suite 434 of the Beverly Hills Hilton Hotel, in Beverly Hills, in California. A drowning, resulting from a cardiovascular disease and the use of cocaine, was the cause of death.
Houston's destiny has been in the image of this quite propitious planetary configuration – the Moon-Jupiter conjunction, trine Midheaven, trine Sun-Venus – as well as of the harmful influences of Neptune and Saturn, respectively posited in the critical 8th (existential crises, disruption, and emotional security) and 12th (ordeals, adversity, and loneliness) Houses.
