Scorpio and Metamorphosis
"A painting used to be a sum of additions. For me, a painting is a sum of destructions." Here is a quote which describes accurately the astrological case of Pablo Picasso, born with the Sun in Scorpio and influenced by a stellium (cluster of planets) in Taurus.
It is obviously the connection to the matter which obsessed the painter whose exceptional talent is unanimously acknowledged.
Astrologically speaking, the fact that the majority of planets are gathered in the eastern hemisphere indicates that Picasso has always acted his own way without concern about how the public would react to his work. Moreover, owing to the Ascendant in Leo, self-pride was not lacking, which is reminded to us by some of his famous quotes.
In addition, with the trio Sun in Scorpio – Ascendant in Leo, as well as the stellium in Taurus, the Fixed mode is strengthened in the sky map, which brings about stubbornness, perseverance, and a high sense of concrete realization.
Picasso was born in Málaga, in a family seeming very suitable for his future destiny. The father, a painting professor, then the curator at the provincial Museum of his natal town, spared no effort to encourage the precocious vocation of his son, who held his first paintbrush when he was around 8. As for the mother, she was the daughter of a winegrower.
On a side note, the surname Picasso is not Spanish; it comes from Liguria, a coastal region in the Northwest of Italy. However, investigations have not determined for good his kinship with an Italian family branch.
The first part of the young Pablo's childhood was cloudless. Very early, he showed passion for and dexterity in drawing. Unfortunately, when he was 14, his sister succumbed to diphtheria. This death affected him deeply, and more than usual, he sought refuge in his creations.
Indeed, Scorpio is a sign which can be at the same time fascinated and horrified by death and anything related to it. On this subject, Picasso had Mercury and the Sun in this sign in the 4th House. The Sun is in opposition with Saturn, and Mercury is in opposition with Jupiter. Therefore, the budding artist was led to this kind of existential questions quite early at home.
Luckily for him, the whole family moved to Barcelona. Not only did it help to open up new horizons, but it also gave Picasso the possibility to take a comprehensive artistic training course. This was still far from the days when, later, he asserted himself as the leader of Cubism, and got a malicious pleasure in breaking the traditional laws of western painting.
Once he reached that stage of maturity, he continually strove to bend and distort objects or bodies. He spared them nothing, in conformity with the style of Scorpio and its way of doing things.
Taurus and Interest in Form
Although Picasso remains known for having transgressed the proprieties like no one else had, he first engaged in an entirely classical pathway, at the Fine Arts in Barcelona, and at the Royal Academy San Fernando in Madrid.
The second zodiacal sign did not go unnoticed, as mentioned in the preamble. The planets posited there are Jupiter, Saturn – the most elevated planet of the chart, although not in an angle – Neptune, and Pluto. The contemporaries of Picasso born during the second quarter of 1881 (starting in April) have the same quadruple conjunction.
Picasso became one of the emblematic figures. This is not surprising, since four planets are posited in the House of social and professional life, and career, in this specific case.
The Scorpio - Taurus duality expresses itself through a fierce struggle between Eros and Thanatos. Picasso's proneness to melancholy led him to paint pictures which remain identified as the Blue Period. They were characterized by sombre works rendered in shades of blue and blue-green.
When he was barely 20, he found a mean to express his disarray after the suicide of one of his friends, Carlos Casagemas, a master of Post-Impressionism, a trend on which Picasso deliberately wanted to turn his back.
At the turn of the century, as one of his paintings was representing Spain at the Universal Exhibition in Paris, he felt a special attraction for the effervescence of the artistic circle of the French capital. He settled there, and hung out with other artists. Afterward, he spent most of his life in France.
At that point, came the Rose Period with lighter tones, then the Period of African art, of Analytic Cubism that he developed with Georges Braque, followed by Synthetic Cubism, which for the first time, launched the use of collage in fine arts.
The Moon in Sagittarius and Women
In 1907, Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, one of the most acclaimed painting of the African art period, is a magnificent illustration of Picasso's technical turn which was inspired by primitive arts. Anyway, the desire to always explore further, literally and figuratively, is typical of the influence of the Moon in Sagittarius, the sign attracted to faraway topics, anything related to the unknown, and the will to discover. In the 5th House, it points to artistic creation too.
The wide opposition with Pluto, though out of sign, increases the initial anxiety, already indicated by the Sun in Scorpio.
The position of the Moon can also be considered responsible for Picasso's complicated relationships with the fair sex. Although he was a great womanizer, Picasso has not left many tender memories for his partners.
Throughout his life, he maintained several mistresses besides his wife or his main partner. He married twice and had four children by three women.
His various spouses and lovers generally described him as a quite violent and uncontrollable person. Natal Venus in the 3rd House is nicely posited in Libra, the sign she rules, but the trine with Pluto suggests tension or permanent energy regarding eroticism.
Nevertheless, because Venus is in sextile with the Moon and with the Ascendant, the artist knew how to please and how to charm. In the 3rd House, Venus gave him the skill to communicate with gentleness, which contrasted with the deep nature of the Sun in Scorpio.
Anyway, his partners in love played a crucial role in the emotional and erotic aspects of Picasso's creative expression. The tumultuous nature of these relationships was deemed vital for his artistic process. Many of these women functioned as muses, and appearing in Picasso's huge work earned them a place in art history.
Uranus and the Desire to Create and to Renew a Different Style
It was mainly to the field of art that Picasso devoted all his energy and gave the best of himself. It is most likely that he owed this disposition to Uranus, who supports three of the planets in Capricorn and Mars in Cancer, and provides considerable energy. Besides, Uranus is frequently found in the chart of geniuses.
His sudden shifts from one genre to another always turned out well, for instance when he left aside Cubism and ventured into Surrealism. He was a supporter of communism, and he took a stand against the war. He wanted to convey messages, and he did it in a very Uranus-like fashion. He attended the World Peace Council in 1949, and drew the famous poster featuring a dove.
Even when he was ageing, Picasso never envisaged to stop painting. His work filled him with enthusiasm, and he never ceased to depict life under all its facets.
Ultimately, it was definitely the Taurus-Scorpio axis which was the specificity of this extraordinary man. He strove to put down roots and to leave a mark as much as to destroy his work with a furious stroke and to start afresh with a new style.
