Perhaps because Sharon Tate has been the victim of a particularly unjust and horrific tragedy, while she was believed to have a great destiny ahead of her, she remains a personality who arouses curiosity even 45 years after she passed away.
For once, we shall look at the horoscope of a deceased person, and as we do so, we shall put forward a few substantial questions about the potential of natal charts.
The number and the tightness of soft aspects immediately strike the practicing astrologer. Actually, one has to admit that being blessed with a nice configuration is not enough...
On 24 January 1943, at 5:47 p.m., when Sharon Tate was born in Dallas, she seems to have everything going for her. Aquarius shelters a tight Sun-Mercury conjunction, which constitutes the first indication about the open-mindedness as well as the intellectual and innovative potential of this child arriving in a family having for father an officer of the American army.
Her good and well assimilated upbringing probably reflects the grand trine linking this conjunction to another pair in Gemini, Saturn and Uranus. Both planets are the traditional and the modern rulers of Aquarius, respectively. They probably build a bridge between the classical and rigorous principles of her heredity, on the one hand, and the future, which is marked by the cinema, on the other hand. Indeed, the grand trine is strengthened by Neptune in early Libra pointing at artistic call.
Sharon Tate is very pampered by soft aspects involving five natal planets, including the Sun. Furthermore, she benefits from Jupiter's position conjunct her Ascendant. Although it is true that Jupiter is in the 12th House and forms no additional important aspect, the orb is tight enough for him to bring about good luck, success, and nice expression of the personality. We could still increase the list and add that the Sun, Mercury, as well as Saturn and Uranus, send a sextile to the Midheaven – social achievement – and offer additional assets in order to experience a brilliant destiny.
Let's get back to the young lady, a fair and ethereal beauty with finesse and light, traits which pertain to Aquarius. Jupiter's influence cancels the risks of introversion of the Ascendant in Cancer, and endows with more liveliness and innocence.
As it is often the case, she starts with beauty contests, and her face resembling that of Catherine Deneuve works wonders. Then she carries on with TV commercials and gets a few small parts in films. This is how she met with Roman Polanski, a director rising to fame. He chooses her for the female character of The fearless vampire killers, in which she plays a beautiful young lady kidnapped by one of these creatures.
It is mainly Roman Polanski who is conquered. They get married in 1968, and they become one of the most sought after couples in social functions. Obviously, Sharon Tate is gone on the path promised by her chart, i.e. she accumulates good luck, success, love, and happiness. As Polanski wrote in his memories: "In those days, she was not just the love of my life, she was the love of everyone's life. Sharon was more than just stunning to look at. She wasn't naïve or stupid or a cliché starlet. What had impressed me most about her, quite apart from her exceptional beauty, was the sort of radiance that springs from her kind and gentle nature."
Unfortunately, we all know that Sharon Tate's life would be disrupted before the end of the sixties, the golden age of which she was one of the queens. On 9 August 1969, in the evening, Charles Manson gives his hateful accomplices the mission to kill. They enter the Polanski's house. He is away. Only Sharon Tate, pregnant, and a few friends are there. With them, she is slaughtered, just a few weeks before giving birth.
Looking for negative aspects in the natal chart, we begin with the opposition between the Sun-Mercury conjunction and Pluto in the 1st House. This is certainly quite ominous. Many persons live with the same aspect, but one must bear in mind that it cast a "demonic" shadow on the personality. It can be overcome by a desire for power, and by the acceptance of a dark facet, or perhaps an unusual sexuality. All this clashes with the "pure" mind of Mercury in Aquarius conjunct the Sun. Pluto's opposition may have the capacity to bring about uneasiness or to stir up violence in other people. Moreover, Sharon Tate was anything but an ambiguous person. Polanski depicts her as a woman who was happy to stay at home and to devote herself to her folks, excited at the prospect of becoming a mother.
Therefore, she was comfortable with her Cancer Ascendant, repressing the opposition we just delineated. We can also take a deeper look at her Moon in Virgo squaring Saturn with a loose orb, which indicates risks of infertility. Although Sharon Tate did keep on begging her executioner to spare her child, they did not listen to her.
To be exhaustive, we must mention the Mars-Neptune square quincunx the Saturn-Uranus conjunction. It may hint at violence (Mars' negative facet) shattering illusions. To sum up, it is true that Tate's chart includes a few shadows, i.e. two difficult aspects affecting her grand trine as well as the two luminaries which could have been better supported.
Analysing this chart some 45 years later provides the proof that it is always possible to have a nice life with a difficult chart, or to undergo tragedies despite the marvellous natal promises.
On 9 August 1969, in late evening, date of the murder of Sharon Tate, again, the transits show no particular danger. Only Mercury, at 5° Virgo, sends a square to her Uranus-Saturn conjunction, a generational aspect. The progressed chart is slightly more revealing: the progressed Sun (secondary progression) shifts signs and enters Pisces, forming an exact square with Uranus. Progressed Mercury conjuncts the Sun-Mercury conjunction, in opposition to natal Pluto. An additional clue, just like the progressed Moon at 4° Virgo, also squaring her Uranus-Saturn conjunction. However, all this is still insufficient to forecast such a tragedy.
Symbolic progressions may be more helpful. Indeed, the Uranus-Saturn conjunction is in exact opposition with natal Mars. The violence and suddenness of Mars-Uranus negative aspects are well known. They provide a more reliable indication of what took place. Simultaneously, the Sun-Mercury conjunction is in exact square with the natal Uranus-Saturn conjunction. It is now starting to become dangerous.
In the solar revolution, there are two hard aspects, a Mars-Mercury square, and a Pluto-Venus opposition. The comparison of the solar revolution with the natal chart offers only a Saturn-Moon square on the natal Ascendant. Everything else is harmonious.
We can perhaps find another clue if we look at Charles Manson's chart – already quite difficult by itself. We observe that it is definitely not compatible with that of Sharon Tate. It is as if he targeted her, specifically. Manson's Pluto falls on Tate's Ascendant, and his heavily afflicted Moon conjuncts her Sun.
In a few words, with the benefit of hindsight, we see that despite her premature death, Sharon Tate enjoyed the delights and the promises of happiness written in her natal chart. But only because she met with the wrong people on that day was enough to put an end to her life. Whereas with his "bad" chart, Charles Manson just remarried with a very young woman in prison!
The astrological lesson that could be drawn is that any predictive method used alone has its limitations, and that it is always necessary to work with several techniques before making a prognostic. In this case, at the moment of the murder, in our opinion, symbolic progressions were alarming, secondary progressions and the solar revolution were slightly disturbing, and transits gave no relevant information, for once.
