Whether we appreciate him or not, Benjamin Biolay is a special case. He is gifted, but he steers clear of spotlights and at the same time, he seeks public approval. He flocks with other celebrities but hates the star system. Therefore, it is not surprising that his astrological portrait confirms his numerous contradictions.
Indeed, his chart is stormy and packed with uncertainties. Although he is an Aquarius, with the Sun in the first degrees of this sign, he is more influenced by Capricorn, in which Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and the North Node are posited. Since there is a T-Square, planetary dominants must be given precedence over signs. The T-square pattern has Uranus at its apex, i.e. the point of tension, forming a square with Jupiter who is tightly linked to Mercury, and the Cancer Ascendant. In other words, owing to the rebellious and independent nature of Uranus, powerful because he is the ruler of the Sun, this T-square suggests a conflict between impulses and behaviour. Thus, the potency of the cardinal mode reaches 60% in the chart, indicating a taste for action and creation, and undoubtedly strong individualism.
However, Cancer on the Ascendant tones down these tendencies and brings in a dreamier note: Biolay is a fundamentally shy artist driven by poetic inspiration. This can be seen in the path he followed, first an academic one. Born in a family of musicians, he studied at the conservatoire and could have remained in the tradition. But he is also drawn to pop music, and his first song, "The Revolution", undeniably bears the stamp of Aquarius.
Getting back to the Mercury-Jupiter relationship, despite the tough aspects received, it denotes a real business mind. Indeed, as strange as it may be, the singer with a hollow voice managed to take calculated risks. Although his first demo tapes were not too successful in the 90's, he steadily built his career by making wise choices. He cooperated with well-established artists, earned their gratitude and finally, that of the audience. His very Capricornian strategy prompted him to seek the company of older personalities such as Henri Salvador. 2010 was the year of his consecration. One irresistibly associates this sudden fame with the transit of Uranus on his Midheaven, in early spring. Benjamin Biolay receives a platinum record for a self-funded album – a very Uranian decision – and won two music awards. This is quite logical, because in his case, Uranus has a major impact owing to the above explanations (ruler of the Sun sign, and apex of the T-square pattern).
On the other hand, even lenient observers are unlikely to say that success has turned Benjamin Biolay into a mellower man. Presently, he continues his tours and alternates top-quality and less good performances, sometimes revealing quarrelsome tendencies. Fortunately, scores of people forgive him his mood swings, and love his lunar face and the dark rings under his eyes which indicate long nights spent in concert halls full of cigarette smoke! Like Gainsbourg, Biolay behaves badly when it comes to marks of honours, and both men have similar unaccommodating tempers. In Biolay's chart, this is mainly due to the powerful Mars-Neptune conjunction in Sagittarius opposed to Saturn in Gemini, which causes communication difficulties, and sometimes stiffness, even though it also endows with artistic assets.

As far as his private life is concerned, with the Moon in Leo, he may be attracted to prominent women, while fiercely defending his freedom within in his love relationships. His marriage with Chiara Mastroianni, the mother of his daughter, from whom he finally divorced, is quite typical in this regard. It must be acknowledged that his need for freedom prevailed and that he was extremely discreet about his love life, probably because of his sentimentally-reserved Venus in Capricorn.
In 2013, the transits of his progressed Moon and his progressed Jupiter on the first degree of Aquarius, and therefore on his natal Sun, do not go unnoticed. How does this translate into? The prospects are obviously good, even though its repercussions may be psychological and not experienced through public events. This progression may bring about a cheerful and calmer state of mind, at least in theory. This would certainly be good for this tormented man! Then, Jupiter transiting the Ascendant at the end of the spring of 2014, well supported by Saturn, has a similar effect: Benjamin Biolay, turned bourgeois, awarded again? In any case, his personality may get the real benefits of a new chapter of his life, with many achievements and the consolidation of his successes.
