Saturn and the Ascendant in Dynamic Aspect

Astrological Aspects: General Introduction

The analysis of a natal chart must be as comprehensive as possible. This is what we do as we make our personalized reports available in our e-shop. It must be borne in mind that many astrologers concentrate on the interpretation of planets in signs and in houses, and of angles, without paying enough attention to aspects. On the contrary, we believe that when aspects involve personal planets between themselves or slow-moving planets, they are of fundamental importance. In all cases, they are at least as significant as the Ascendant or the Sun. This is particularly relevant when the orb is tight (i.e. when the aspect is exact). We have applied this condition to this new series of articles on aspects, specifically describing how famous personalities experience them.

Saturn and the Ascendant in Challenging Aspect

This article discusses the impact of Saturn on the Ascendant. Unlike the interaction between two planetary energies, here the focus is on the influence that Saturn exerts on personality, as the Ascendant is closely related to self-expression.

The Ascendant indeed reveals how each of us presents ourselves to the world, whether consciously or not. It provides information about spontaneous reactions, personal style, behaviors, and tastes. It also offers valuable clues about vitality and health.

It plays a crucial role in the analysis of the natal chart, as it depends on the precise moment of birth. Technically, it corresponds to the first sign rising in the East on the horizon, forming an axis with the Descendant. It opens the 1st house, symbolizing identity. Any planet closely connected to this angle, by conjunction or major aspect, strongly influences how the native will act, bringing a particular dimension to the symbolism of the Ascendant sign. This association can be harmonious or, on the contrary, create tension.

Saturn, on the other hand, is often summarized by one word: duty. Or a variation, necessity. This planet is associated with discipline, responsibility, and obligations. The native is highly aware of their reputation, which they want to be upright and unblemished. At the same time, they never lose sight of the problem of limitations, dictated either by society or by their own superego.

Time is Saturn's ally, and ambition through perseverance is also one of the key elements of its interpretation.

When Saturn affects the Ascendant through a major and precise aspect, the individuals involved may feel as though they are constantly carrying a heavy weight on their shoulders, especially when the aspect is tense, such as in the case of a square.

We have deliberately left out the opposition, as it equates to a placement on the Descendant. As it involves an angle and not two planets, an opposition to the Ascendant is primarily interpreted as a conjunction to the cusp of the 7th house.

The square is an aspect of tension that requires significant effort to be mastered, but maturity usually allows for this to be achieved. One of the main challenges lies in the acute awareness of one's responsibilities. This configuration can create a sense of blockage or constraint, with a tendency to take on too many burdens, sometimes reluctantly or leading to frustration.

Excessive seriousness combined with a lack of self-confidence leads to a tendency to doubt one's abilities and submit to the authority of important figures, whether in the family or professional sphere.

The challenge with this aspect is to break free from these constraints and try to exercise one's free will, without fear. It is advised to question the origin of this lack of enthusiasm or openness. The native must learn to recognize the moments when relaxation and lightness are possible.

The risk is to never let one's guard down, projecting the image of an austere, rigorous person, held back by inhibitions due to an overly high moral sense.

In order to better explain this aspect, we are mentioning several well-known personalities, here Muhammad Ali (square), Brie Larson (square), Marguerite Duras (square), and Justin Trudeau (square).

This article deliberately isolates the aspect (a square or an unfavorable conjunction) so as to better describe them. For this reason, it claims on no account to be a psychological analysis of the celebrity in question, for whom many other articles are available in the "Focus" section.

It is possible to find thousands of other horoscopes having Saturn in aspect of square or unfavorable conjunction with the Ascendant (or any other aspects), with the online tool search. The planets, positions in sign and in house as well as the orb, are configurable.

Muhammad Ali: The Rigidity of Saturn Opposite Leo Ascendant

Mohamed Ali / Author: Unknown author, Dutch National Archives 1966 / CC BY-SA (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/nl/deed.en)

Considered one of the greatest boxers of all time, Muhammad Ali was born under the sign of Capricorn, a sign ruled by Saturn. The planet is located in the 10th house, a placement that highlights his desire to establish his social position and achieve status through his efforts.

Saturn brings its will for rigor and discipline, which strongly contrasts with his Leo Ascendant, which would instead push him to display confidence and give him charisma.

This internal contradiction is reinforced by the tense connection between Saturn and the Ascendant, with Saturn being in Taurus, a sign that brings a strong sense of value and resistance. Saturn's energy, serious and measured, conflicts with the proud and fiery aspects of Leo.

This paradox in his chart reflects Muhammad Ali's life path well. Born Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr. into a modest and religious family, one anecdote from his youth illustrates this contrast: after having his bicycle stolen, he wanted to find the thief and teach him a lesson. A policeman then advised him to channel his anger into boxing. This advice would prove decisive, as Ali went on to win numerous titles, earning the nickname "The Greatest" and accumulating honors.

His adoption of the name Muhammad Ali expressed his attraction to Islam and his need for spirituality, while also standing against the white establishment as a descendant of African slaves.

However, his religious commitment was nuanced: after initially aligning with the Nation of Islam, he distanced himself from the movement to embrace a more personal approach to his faith.

This difficult life path, filled with obstacles, illustrates the challenges posed by Saturn's square to the Ascendant. For example, after losing his title for the first time (following many successes), regaining it was a long and painful process, with fights that left physical scars.

The fragmented end of his career attests to the tremendous efforts he made throughout his life for the glory of his sport.

On a personal level, despite his fame, Muhammad Ali struggled with a lack of emotional stability, having fathered children with five different women.

This pattern may reveal a deep-seated mistrust leading to a certain melancholic solitude, an effect of Saturn.

Brie Larson: The Delicate Balance Between Libra and Saturn

Brie Larson / Author : Brie_Larson.jpg: Ian Smith from London, England derivative work: RanZag (talk) 05-2011 / CC BY-SA (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0/deed.en)

The actress Brie Larson has a personality full of paradoxes, as she is a Libra native, a sign oriented towards harmony and relationships with others, while also being imbued with Saturn's austere energy.

On one hand, the desire to please and seek external approval guides her, but on the other, a culminating Saturn constantly reminds her of the vanity and futility of this pursuit.

Her childhood was marked by her parents' divorce, an event that left a lasting imprint on her psyche, particularly in her relationship with her father.

As an adult, she cut off all contact with him, revealing that her "anger, fears, and frustrations" were difficult to overcome, especially in a public profession.

Saturn is in Capricorn here, the sign it rules, and it culminates at the Midheaven, angular and flanked by Neptune and Uranus. This combination gives her a seriousness that may have slowed her impulse to act, particularly in her early years.

Naturally shy, she nonetheless found the strength to refuse the easy path, such as choosing light, commercial films, instead preferring auteur cinema.

Despite her meteoric rise in Hollywood, she has always maintained a certain level of discretion, selecting her projects with rare rigor. This Saturnian influence is also evident in her commitment to causes she holds dear, where she does not hesitate to personally get involved.

Marguerite Duras: A Constant Struggle Against Authority

Marguerite Duras / Author : Unknown author, musee.sacem.fr 03-1960 / Public domain

Marguerite Duras is an iconic figure in French literature, born under the sign of Aries, known for its strength and independence.

This sign pushes her to take control of her life without waiting for others' approval. However, Saturn positioned at the Imum Coeli (IC) in Gemini forms a square with her Pisces Ascendant. This astrological signature introduces tension between the frustration linked to her origins, represented by Saturn, and the sensitivity of a Pisces Ascendant, an ethereal and imaginative sign.

Duras drew heavily from her personal life to fuel her works, especially family themes. Writing allowed her to transcend her internal conflicts, as Gemini is the sign associated with communication and talent in writing.

She had to overcome an unusual childhood, as the daughter of colonial settlers in Cochinchina, after her parents chose to immigrate there, encouraged by the French government. Her father's illness ended this exile for the first time, giving her the chance to return to France, where young Duras discovered the arts, especially music.

But her mother later decided to return to Indochina, a disastrous choice that would later inspire one of her major novels, The Sea Wall (Un barrage contre le Pacifique).

Marguerite Duras also played an ambiguous role during the German occupation of France, which tarnished her reputation and exposed her to forms of rejection.

These, coupled with her literary success, profoundly affected her. Her constant struggle against authority — whether familial, social, or political — marked her entire life.

The square between Saturn and the Ascendant symbolizes this perpetual struggle, amplifying in her a sense of restriction and discipline, which at times trapped her in her own contradictions.

Justin Trudeau: The Weight of Saturn and the Social Quest

Justin Trudeau / Author : Justin Trudeau 12-2023 / CC BY-SA (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/deed.en)

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau embodies the legacy of a political dynasty, with his father, Pierre Trudeau, having also led the country. This connection to tradition and authority is well represented in his natal chart by his Sun in Capricorn, ruled by Saturn.

However, in this case, Saturn is in Gemini, in a dominant position at the Midheaven, which gives Trudeau an unexpected dimension in his public and political role.

In his youth, Trudeau was more interested in literature, travel, and sports than in politics, a good illustration of the diverse influences of Saturn in Gemini. He later benefited from the unpopularity of his conservative opponents to be propelled onto the international stage with the image of a young, progressive leader.

Yet, Saturn always catches up with those it governs, imposing its limits and heavy responsibilities. Justin Trudeau has not escaped this rule, facing a series of economic failures and controversies that have somewhat tarnished his reputation, notably during the handling of the pandemic and the truckers' protests.

The square between Saturn and his Virgo Ascendant also reflects a certain lack of confidence, which at times drives him to nervousness. Despite his efforts to appear modest and pragmatic, he has not been spared from criticism, even though everything seemed to be in his favor at the beginning.

However, thanks to other aspects of Saturn — the Martian energy (Mars in Pisces, in sextile) and the Venusian charm (Venus in Aquarius, in trine) — he shows genuine empathy and a strong concern for social issues, which could still benefit him in the years to come. He will need this as the next elections approach.
