Taken in its entirety, the chart of Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, indicates two main contradictory trends, namely progressivism and traditionalism. Indeed, the most important planets and signs are the archetypes of one of these two ends.
Uranus, the first dominant, culminates on the Midheaven, and blows a wind of change in Taurus where he is posited, and therefore on the career. Obviously, a whole generation has experienced this transit, which may have to do with both sudden financial changes and farmers unions. Is it the sign of his election, which is occurring in a difficult international context? Or that his pontificate will be marked by this type of issues or upheavals? In any case, this Uranus rules two personal planets, the Moon and Venus, posited in Aquarius. This conjunction may indicate that feelings and emotions are channelled towards altruism and universalism. It may be an element of sublimation which, in the case of a man devoted to God, seems to fit perfectly well. There are no devouring passion, no excesses, no tears, and no human weaknesses. On the other hand, he intellectually feels that he is the brother of each and everyone, without distinction of gender or age, and without displaying any superiority.
Furthermore, his Sun in Sagittarius also reveals a quite developed Self, optimistic and serene, and the willingness to improve the destiny of his fellow creatures. It may also embody the fact that the pope comes from the other side of the world, literally an alien to the Vatican’s inner circle. Therefore, he is most likely to bring somehow a different vision which will make a sharp contrast.
However, as mentioned above, other factors indicate that a part of his personality is more inclined to stick to the heritage of the past. Let’s begin with this Cancer-Capricorn axis which shelters his Ascendant and his Descendant, respectively, i.e. the relations between the Self and other people.
Their common characteristic is to respect traditions, considered as the foundation of any link among human beings. The Cancer Ascendant emphasises his genuine benevolence towards the people. Pope Francis would even be almost more maternal than paternal. This is quite obvious from the images released after his election, when he kisses children or hugs handicapped people very spontaneously.

The other sign influencing his astrological portrait is Capricorn, which endows him with a sense of seriousness and duty, as well as a propensity for asceticism. Fortunately, his Capricorn Descendant is softened by two planets ruler of this axis, namely Jupiter and Mercury. Both play the role of complementary dominants, thus confirming that Pope Francis is comfortable as he wields authority, and that he is a sociable and warm person.

The other remarkable feature of the chart is the Sun conjunct the North Node. Therefore, the Sun is strong, indicating that the incarnation responds to destiny – the Karma. In addition, the Sun is also conjunct Jupiter, with an eight-degree orb, an indication of good luck which is strengthened by Jupiter’s rulership over the Sun.
Two trines are worth mentioning. The first one is formed by the Sun, the Lunar Node and Jupiter, and the second one is formed by the Midheaven and Neptune, the planet of faith, which may be quite tricky since it opposes Saturn and squares the Nodes. It will be interesting to see how Pope Francis will avoid the bumps in his road: sometimes, goodwill is not enough when one tackles such a secretive and immutable machinery as the Roman Curia.
