Ambitious, seductive, and megalomaniac. This is not our assessment; this is how the French version of Wikipedia describes him on its presentation page. However, it matches very well the astrologic portrait of the great actor Kirk Douglas, who just celebrated his 100th birthday.
Sagittarius, Douglas' Sun sign, endows him with the drive, the self-assurance, and the vitality which can move mountains. Born in a modest family of Jewish origins, with no special training, Douglas has the courage – or the thoughtlessness – to go to New York to become nothing but a comedian. The praiseful reviews he got after he made his debut on the stage encouraged him to follow this path. Jupiter, ruler of the sign, sends a nice trine to the Sun, a definite asset which makes life easier for him, and brings about many opportunities. As a good Sagittarius, he was full of self-confidence.
His Ascendant is in Aquarius, a sign having many points in common with Sagittarius. Like the latter, the sign sees far and thinks that a brighter future lies ahead. The alliance of Sagittarius and Aquarius gives a very progressive and open personality. Douglas suffers from McCarthyism and has always been a hard-core democrat. The 11th sign is prominent since its ruler Uranus is in the 1st House, that of personality.
Therefore, this planet highlights Douglas' original and atypical nature. As soon as he shows up somewhere, scores of people notice him. With his impressive physique, which will earn him the part of Spartacus, directed by Stanley Kubrick, and many other characters with bulging biceps, his shoulders are literally solid enough to cope with any role. In addition, his craggy face and his famous dimple complete the picture of a flamboyant leading man.
Despite difficult debuts, Douglas is lucky enough to be on film and theatre posters with the heavyweights of the time such as Lauren Bacall, Robert Mitchum, or Burt Lancaster. The latter became his close friend for a long time. The box-office success of a film appropriately titled The Champion, in 1949, sparks two decades of achievements. He signs a contract with the big production company of those days, Warner, which enables him to rise to international stardom. Although he is nominated several times for the Oscars, he does not win the coveted statuette. He contents himself with the Honorary Oscar for his 50-year career in 1996.
As we keep on following the thread of the main characteristics of his horoscope, we are led to the theme of seduction. Douglas did not conceal that when he started his career, he was a womaniser involved in numerous affairs. It is easy to imagine that when he was young, his Venus in Scorpio square Uranus caused instability. Fortunately, marriage was a challenge he faced well. Even though his first marriage ended up quite rapidly in divorce, his second wife Anne Buydens, whom he met in 1954 on a film set, turned out be his soul-mate, as he states himself. Nevertheless, with Saturn and Neptune posited near the Descendant (the axis symbolising marriage), his needs proved deeper than he assumed initially. Indeed, the personal features of his chart probably prompted him to behave with some frivolity. But when he came across Ms Right, he certainly realised that higher issues deserved that he changed.
In any case, he celebrated in 2013 his diamond wedding with his wife, a milestone people very seldom reach. He founded a real dynasty in Hollywood, since he has four sons and many grandchildren. He has had his share of joys and sorrows in the affective and family areas. It must be underlined that nowadays, his son Michael Douglas is also a living legend and gets along marvellously well with his father.
As for megalomania, it is the film-maker Bertrand Tavernier, in those days Douglas' press attaché, who mentioned it with quite a lot of humour. A very Sagittarius and very Jupiter flaw. The fact remains that Kirk Douglas is a myth today, the last representative, or almost, of Hollywood golden age.
Douglas accumulates all sorts of records with an exceptional longevity. Although it is impossible for a serious astrologer to foresee it just by analysing a natal chart, there are clues indicating whether the health is good or not. The auspicious relation between Uranus, ruler of the Ascendant, and the two luminaries in opposition (sextile the Sun, himself receiving a trine from Jupiter, and trine the Moon) improves this configuration.
Without prejudging the future, we notice that this is the third time that the gladiator who embodied Spartacus is currently experiencing the return of Saturn on his Sun. He brilliantly celebrated his 100th birthday on 9 December 2016 at a big party especially prepared by Michael Douglas and his wife, the actress Catherine Zeta-Jones. An event which attracted all the cream of Hollywood society, which is a token, if at all necessary, of the consideration and the love so many personalities extend to him.
