Analysis of Whitney Houston's astrological chart

Astrology at the service of character analysis

Daily news regularly puts the spotlight on all sorts of famous people. Although we are not fond of juicy information, we inevitably have an idea about a given political figure, a movie star, a Royal Highness, or a skilled sportsman.

Those well-known faces draw our interest and seem familiar to us, because we watch their successes or their setbacks day by day.

Astrology may also be considered as an interesting filter to better define their personality, and to guess whether the events they experience are confirmed by their planets' activities. Astrology does not reveal everything, of course, but using the dominants and other peculiarities of the natal chart, we can see whether the astrological portrait matches the collective image or offers unsuspected additional nuances.

After Kamala Harris and Tim Burton, here is an article about the late Whitney Houston.

The cost of an ambiguous Sun-Venus duet

The natal chart of the late diva Whitney Houston is extremely nice. The sky map displays a blend of auspicious and taxing aspects which certainly explain her outstanding and at the same tragic life.

The singer, so talented in this area that she was called "The Voice", was a real queen; she was born with the Sun in Leo and supported by Venus in a Fire sign in conjunction with the Sun. Besides, the planet of love and beauty is involved in a configuration that we shall discuss again.

Born in a family having numerous musicians, Houston was very young when she followed in the footsteps of her mother, Cissy Houston, a renowned chorister. This was why the mother was well-placed to notice the extraordinary voice of her daughter, whom she naturally encouraged and allowed to pursue her rightful ambitions. Firstly, this implied a few modeling activities – the image of beauty and poise dear to the sign of Leo – so as to make a breakthrough more rapidly. Here are the gifts of Venus, bearing in mind that Houston was nonetheless ambivalent, as we shall see.

Indeed, posited in the 6th House, the pair of planets forms a Fire Grand Trine with the Midheaven in Sagittarius (professional destiny, foreign matters) and a beautiful Moon-Jupiter conjunction in AriesAries Owing to the influence of the Sun and of Venus on Houston's career, it was logical that love was one of the main topics of her songs.

However, the said Sun-Venus conjunction is also in square with Neptune in the 8th House and in opposition with Saturn in the 12th. It is clear that these two slow-moving planets join forces to tip the scales toward disaster and disappointment despite, once again, the brilliant facets of her existence. Saturn for difficulties and health issues, and Neptune for addiction to alcohol, drugs, and an indefinable but recurring malaise.

We also note that the conjunction is in the 6th House, which prevented Houston from falling too young in the trap of choosing the easy way out. This is always possible when the Sun is in Leo and there is a Grand Trine. Houston had a sense of ethics, of work, of effort, and of perseverance; she gave the impression that she was at the service of God, and later on, of her audience.

The Moon in Aries accounts for precocious success

Regarding precocity and good luck, Houston could rely on the qualities of swiftness, willpower, and the opportunities of the Moon-Jupiter conjunction in the 1st House. At 20, Houston persuaded Clive Davis, one of the biggest American producers, to trust her. Her first album was enough to prove her right, since almost 25 million copies were sold throughout the world, which never happened to a near-beginner.

Immediately idolized by all sorts of public, it seemed that young Houston was set to experience a fairy tale. The eighties and nineties were a long succession of events confirming her great dispositions.

The Ascendant in Pisces exacerbates sensitiveness

Unwillingly, Houston probably drew crowds with her indescribable grace and the tone of her so bright and powerful voice.

More than once, she demonstrated in her career that she was concerned about the fate of the poorest, and this was corroborated by her interpretations. She never hit the target better than when she sang about unhappy or impossible love, like for example in the soundtrack of the film The Bodyguard, a successful romantic comedy in which she co-starred with Kevin Costner in 1992. She has devoted her person and her time to charity work.

The Ascendant in Pisces and its ruler Neptune, rather challenging and in the 8th House, have led her to misuse the traits of Pisces: alcohol, escapism and hard drugs, perhaps all of them simultaneously. Unfortunately, her death at 48, by drowning in her bathtub – at least according the official statement – caused by these abuses, is deeply symbolic of the configuration.

Mercury hindered in Virgo and painful attacks

In the 7th House, the Mercury-Pluto conjunction – with Uranus nearby, in conjunction too – has prompted Houston to accept a frustrating and troubled emotional life and love affairs. In addition, Mercury in an angle and in domicile indicates a perfectionist mindset vulnerable to criticism.

Regrettably for her, after a splendid youth and two decades of achievements, the years 2000 represented mostly a long and slow descent into hell. She gradually became less successful, and health issues thwarted her projects (the 6th-12th axis is tenanted by the Sun-Venus conjunction in opposition with Saturn, as we mentioned earlier).

Houston's gorgeous voice betrayed her little by little. At the same time, she remained under the heel of her husband, Bobby Brown, and of a violent and disparaging bond which she can hardly get rid of.

Bogged down in her addiction predicament and a tough divorce finalized in 2007, Houston became the shadow of her former self. Furthermore, she was cornered by a few financial setbacks – which is particularly exacting for a Sun in Leo in terms of pride. Several months previously, the singer had to cede the manor in Atlanta, her main residence, to the tax authorities.

However, during the 2009-2011 period, fleeting success was back. But on 11 February 2012, in the afternoon, Houston was found unconscious by her bodyguards in the bathtub of the suite 434 of the Beverly Hills Hilton Hotel, in Beverly Hills, in California. A drowning, resulting from a cardiovascular disease and the use of cocaine, was the cause of death.

Houston's destiny has been in the image of this quite propitious planetary configuration – the Moon-Jupiter conjunction, trine Midheaven, trine Sun-Venus – as well as of the harmful influences of Neptune and Saturn, respectively posited in the critical 8th (existential crises, disruption, and emotional security) and 12th (ordeals, adversity, and loneliness) Houses.

Sun 16°42' Leo, in House VI

Sun Aspects
Sun trine Moon orb -0°23'
Sun conjunction Venus orb +5°29'
Sun opposite Saturn orb -3°18'
Sun trine Jupiter orb -2°47'
Sun trine Midheaven orb +1°37'
Sun square Neptune orb -3°44'

The Sun represents vitality, individuality, will-power and creative energy and honours. For a woman, it also represents her father, and later her husband. The Sun is one of the most important symbols in the birth chart, as much as the Ascendant, then the Moon (a bit less for a man), the ruler of the Ascendant and the fast-moving planets.

It's element is fire; it is hot and dry, it governs Leo, is in exaltation in Aries and is in analogy with the heart. It represents the boss, authority, beside the father and the husband ; the age of the Sun goes from 20 years old to about 40, following the Venus age when one is aware of his seductive power.

Temperament: Bilious

Characterology: Emotive, Active, Secondary, passionate type.

For more information, see the page dedicated to the Sun.

Sun in Leo

You display a firm will and a certain nobleness of heart. You make use of, and sometimes, you abuse of your persuasion powers in your efforts to project a brilliant image of yourself. Your generosity is unlimited towards the people who do not antagonize your beliefs. But you do not accept to be contradicted, and you do not tolerate errors and defeats. You are sensitive to power struggles and you strive to keep your image and your panache free from all stain. No one can step on your toes! Leo is ambitious and he does not rest until the exhibited power he conquered is fully respected. Therefore, you properly fulfil the responsibilities you are entrusted with, but above all, you make it a point of honour to show that you are up to any situation. Whenever you have the opportunity to prove yourself in your activity, your fighting spirit, votre majestic persuasion powers and your conquering mind are amazing. You need to wield power. It is indispensable for you to feel comfortable and to be at your best. Leo must be cautious not to mistake his territory with that of his neighbour! The respect for borders – affective, social and professional – can spare you the delusions and the backlashes inherent to the love for power. If this condition is met, individual legitimate ambition becomes a source of creativity.

Sun in House VI

In your natal chart, the Sun is in the 6th House. You strive to keep your life setting under control. Therefore, you prefer to limit your experiences to activities which you master, and which you know in their slightest details. Each thing has its place and its timing. You try to focus your efforts, and to gain in efficiency what you lose in fancy. What is your ideal? A professional life in which your qualities blossom: precision, logic, and sense of observation.

Sun Dominant

If the Sun is part of your natal chart's planetary dominants, in astrology, you are said to be a Solarian: you loathe pettiness and Machiavellian manoeuvre, and you are fond of natural nobleness as well as of direct and honest attitudes. You endeavour to get out of muddled or dark situations as quickly as possible. Your need for transparency may lead you to make cut-and-dried judgments such as yes or no, and black or white. However, your honesty commands your entourage's consideration. At times, you come across as authoritarian. It is true that you never want to be thought of the notable absentee, and that you manage to make people pay attention to you, as well as to your plans and your assessments. To this end, the Solarian sometimes develops a great talent for placing himself under the spotlight without missing a single opportunity to arouse interest. Some other Solarians, although more discreet, still manage to be the focus of any debate, even in situations of exclusion. It is your way of being present even though you are actually not there... More than other people, you appreciate the esteem extended to you. It is useless to cheat with you, since in all areas you consider establishing enduring relationships only with those who love you, admire you, respect you, or express some degree of affection to you. Your will to straighten out your inter-personal relationships is your strength and sometimes, your Achilles' heel. You cannot achieve anything behind the scenes. Therefore, your comportment is marked with heroism, and your stands are devoid of ambiguity, in the sense that your commitments are unfailing, and your rebuffs, final.

Interpretation of the 16° Leo symbolic degree

"Near an oasis, a wealthy man on a camel travels accompanied by his servants." (Janduz version)

Persistent, demanding, and spiteful character. One always demonstrates gratitude but never forgives a bad deed. Faraway lands and long journeys are important elements in one's brilliant career. Sharp intellectual faculties, hard work, and excellent organisation skills, supported by good luck, enable one to earn a good reputation. It is most likely that the biggest part of life is spent abroad at the service of one's country. Should the natal chart concur, in the second part of life, one achieves happiness and extraordinary successes. In the countries where one has worked, one's name will go down in history.

N.B.: symbolic degrees belong to a branch of fatalistic astrology. Their interpretation must be regarded with the utmost caution, especially given the fact that different authors give different meanings to symbolic degrees. This is the reason why they are not included in our Astrotheme reports.

Moon in Aries

On the day and at the time of your birth, the Moon was in the sign of Aries. Your imagination is lively and fantastic and brings about periods of enthusiasm during which you are driven by your sudden impulses. Your sensitivity lives on thrills that you want to experience in the instant… till exhaustion. Your spontaneity is coupled with some instability: mood swings and whimsical behaviours are the dangers to which your excitability exposes you. You often show demeanours full of contrasts, especially in your intimate life. One never gets bored with you, even on a daily basis. Isn’t real rest about being touched and stimulated, over and over again? Boredom is what you dread most. Therefore, it is easy for you to adjust to precarious life rhythms and to quickly achieve balance, as temporary as it may be, should unforeseen evolution emerge.

Moon in House I

The Moon is in the 1st House. When you deal with a person whom you do not know, or when you are facing a new situation, you try above all to adjust. You absorb external parameters in order to blend into the environment and feel safe as if you were at home. Adaptation is mainly a matter of sensitivity. If the contact is good, everything is fine. But should outside issues disturb your tranquillity and your need for well-being, then, you cut off your lines of communication.

Moon Dominant

If the Moon is part of your natal chart's planetary dominants, in astrology, you are said to be a Lunarian: the driving force behind your actions is mainly the pursuit of well-being and tranquillity. Your sensitive and romantic self lives on those periods of rest during which you let your imagination wander at will. This is your way of finding inspiration and balance. Nothing is allowed to disturb your feeling of fulfilment and security within a harmonious cell, be it a family or a clan. More than other people, the Lunarian is attached to those moments during which one forgets one's worries and lets oneself cast adrift aimlessly, with no other goal than to be lulled into an ambiance, a situation, or a perfect moment. Many people do not understand such absences and their meaning, which is to regain strength. These people readily describe you with such unflattering terms as apathy and nonchalance. Never mind! Some inspirations require surrendering as well as striking a balance derived from alternate action and passivity. Your qualities are expressed to the fullest in situations which demand familiarity and privacy. Your capacities to respect and blend into your environment is at least as valuable as some other people's aggressive dispositions. However, you are well-advised to avoid indolence and renunciation out of laziness or indifference.

Interpretation of the 17° Aries symbolic degree

"A man and a woman shake hands affectionately. He touches her shoulder in a gesture of friendship." (Janduz version)

Kind, helpful, and honest character. Sincere feelings of devotion, peace, and harmony prevail within the family, as well as in the workplace among colleagues, employers, and employees. Success is nice and steady, though not outstanding. A female figure plays an instrumental role in enhancing one's social status.

The sign Mercury occupies is significant only if Mercury is part of your planetary dominantes. In your chart, Mercury is in Virgo. Communication is discreet and balanced. It is important that you properly understand the limits of your knowledge and your contacts. Assimilating information is fine. But for you, organizing them is better. You are a perfectionist regarding the choice and the quality of your relationships: limits must be borne in mind. You are credited with an analytical and often critical mind. Because every small detail may be meaningful, as you face new situations, you are anxious to keep them under control and you analyze persons and events with a magnifying glass. Your observation abilities allow you to understand the ins and outs of any given problem. The only danger is that you may clutter you life with meaningless trivial details.

Mercury in House VII

You take the role of an observer who is avid for novelties, discoveries, and surprises. Everything catches your attention and becomes an opportunity for new encounters, relationships, and learning. The world amazes you, amuses you sometimes, and stimulates your curiosity. Because the most important thing is to discover, and because you consider that each new situation is packed with potentialities, you try to fill the gaps in your knowledge. Although your open-mindedness may scatter your centres of interest, it also enables you to carefully avoid sticking to only one immutable and rigid view. The slightest sign enables you to perceive the other side of the coin, as well as the infinite complexity of people and of situations. On the human plane, you seek the dialogue and the information without which you know that you are not able to fully grasp the nature of your interlocutor. This keen interest in the Unknown sharpens your inter-relational skills. All these qualities are traditionally associated with Mercury.

Venus in Leo

Venus describes your affective life. On the day of your birth, she is found in Leo. For you, love can be but brilliant, exalting, absolute and exclusive. Your sensitivity is lively and you experience your emotions and your feelings to the fullest. Your character is always unyielding, passionate and intransigent. You give your love totally, without compromise and half-measure. Your sentimental life is a theatre play. Love is the best thing in the world and the most rewarding for you. Through your affective relationships, you want to earn recognition for your qualities and your worth. Therefore, you do not hesitate to show your partner an unlimited generosity… as long as you are not disappointed. Your will to experience an exemplary passion is very strong because you are an idealist and you can love only if you can admire. Cheers for loyal love based on amazement and mutual recognition! If your partner has theses qualities, all is fine. But when you do not control the game, when you cannot manage to have your merits and your qualities acknowledged, you may become tyrannical. However, pride is detrimental to the couple’s harmony and to genuine exchanges. You know it but you are adamant regarding your image. This is the other side of the coin of your qualities!

Venus in House VI

Venus expresses her characteristics through the 6th House values. Affectivity is your signature. You try to define yourself, as well as to define your social role, making use of your sensitivity, your sense of aesthetics, and your affectivity. Therefore, your profession may be directly related to the Venusian world: charm, femininity, and art. In any case, finding your place and your social function is a matter of seduction, instinct, and probably natural likes and dislikes.

Venus Dominant

If Venus is part of your natal chart's planetary dominants, in astrology, you are said to be a Venusian: you are a sensual and emotional person particularly receptive to the natural likes and dislikes aroused by your contact with people. You are prone to frequent instinctive aversions and true passions which are exclusively driven by the feeling of love. The heart has its reasons which Reason knows nothing of... Your balance is based on the richness of your affective life. Without love, the Venusian is resourceless, lost, and deprived of any reason for living. You have an obvious and strong will to charm and to arouse the attachments without which you cannot properly function. Every area of your life is thus marked by your affectivity. The danger is that you may "be taken in" by charm. In such cases, you would prefer to keep your emotions under better control. Thus, hyper-sensitivity has its own inconveniences. Nevertheless, better than anyone else, you know how to play with feelings and attractions. Although you are sometimes caught in the traps of an over sensitive emotionalism, feelings remain your best assets in many circumstances. There is another aspect to the Venusian dominant. According to the Tradition, this planet rules the Arts, and you are endowed with some degree of artistic dispositions, ranging from good to excellent.

Interpretation of the 11° Leo symbolic degree

"A beautiful white bull grazes in the shade of a big tree near a woman who reads quietly." (Janduz version)

Benevolent, calm and active character. A high-ranking female exerts a fortunate influence. One enjoys wealth, whether it is inherited or acquired by one's own efforts. Life unfolds in peace and happiness. This degree often indicates that properties are bequeathed by relatives who have no children. In the natal chart of a female, this degree describes a personality which is particularly charming, demure, and celibate.

N.B.: symbolic degrees belong to a branch of fatalistic astrology. Their interpretation must be regarded with the utmost caution, especially given the fact that different authors give different meanings to symbolic degrees. This is the reason why they are not included in our Astrotheme reports.

With Mars in Libra, you are enthusiastic when the situation favours exchanges and dialogues. Your affectivity responds to contacts with other people and with the unknown. You show your excited nature at each new encounter. You strive to reconcile opposite viewpoints more than to emphasize divergences. However, you do not confuse the interests at stake: what is white is not black… You may have an innate talent for difficult negotiations, and you may play the role of natural mediator in contentious situations. Your strength lies in your ability to handle conflicts and to harmonize antagonistic positions. All situations offer several alternatives, all problems have several solutions. Your matching skills may make you appear as a person who is more sociable than you really are. When necessary, you can be curt. For you, action means intense relationship, connection, sympathy with the external world and establishing a life frame that is based on harmony and respectful of differences.

Mars in House VII

With Mars in the 7th House, the world is a battlefield! Of course, you do not consider that everybody is a contender. Fortunately! Nevertheless, you have a confrontational nature, with an acute and burning sensitivity. You often challenge the other person, be it your partner or your friend, your spouse, or your lover. The limit to your sociability is a fierce temperament which reacts promptly whenever the situation is threatening.

Mars Dominant

If Mars is part of your natal chart's planetary dominants, in astrology, you are said to be a Marsian: in your hand-to-hand struggle for life, you demonstrate an acute and active sense of confrontation with the world, with other people, and with your own destiny. You need to take action and to fight for your projects and your desires. You perceive all situations with deep intensity, and you react to the here and now without bothering to step back in order to ensure that events are under your control. You take up challenges with excessive foolhardiness as a consequence of your impulsiveness. However, better than anyone else, you know how to mobilise your resources in case of crisis. You take action whenever it is necessary to do so, and you are present in a timely manner. With Mars, your attitudes are dictated by the realities of the moment, by your emotions, and by everything which proved to have worked in the past. When this dominant is not well integrated, it may bring about an aggressive or impulsive behaviour. Therefore, you must learn to control your hyper-sensitivity and your fits of temper. You are also endowed with Marsian qualities: the fighting spirit and the taste for duel without which one may find oneself overwhelmed by events. When this willpower is well channelled, its precious energy enables to cope with all sorts of contingencies. There are a thousand ways to win, and a thousand challenges to take up with the enthusiasm and the dynamism which make life so worthy. A certain idea of life which is wild, passionate, and in tune with events.

Interpretation of the 8° Libra symbolic degree

"Near a bedridden man, a woman stands by a child who cries. A young girl weeps on the stairs of a mausoleum." (Janduz version)

Reserved, sensual, and melancholic character. This degree often portends a separation caused by a bereavement which occurs during childhood or adolescence. In adulthood, one would be well-advised not to listen to one's heart impulses unless the partner is really trustworthy. There is a strong probability of widowhood, or divorce, followed by a second marriage. This degree also indicates psychic powers as well as talent for astrology and the interpretation of cards or tarots.

N.B.: symbolic degrees belong to a branch of fatalistic astrology. Their interpretation must be regarded with the utmost caution, especially given the fact that different authors give different meanings to symbolic degrees. This is the reason why they are not included in our Astrotheme reports.

This is the reason why the sign occupied here is less meaningful than when it is occupied by the so-called fast planets, i.e. the Sun, the Moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars. When this dominant is well integrated, it is a factor of affluence and optimism, and a certain degree of joviality enables you to easily fit into various spheres. It constitutes your main asset to manage your life. However, you must at times curb your desire for integration, lest your sense of opportunity turns into extreme opportunism. Here also, the key to success lies in a correct estimate of everyone's chances and possibilities. Although management is one of your forte, and you can adjust your objectives to current realities better than other people, you lack the hindsight which enables you to avoid short-term vagaries and daily fluctuations. If you strive too much to adapt, you run a risk of betraying yourself. This is the other traditional side of the coin with "The Greater Benefic"!

Neptune Dominant

If Neptune is part of your natal chart's planetary dominants, in astrology, you are said to be a Neptunian: your intuition is highly developed. You are of a contemplative nature, and you are particularly receptive to ambiances, places, and people. You gladly cultivate the art of letting-go, and you allow the natural unfolding of events to construct your world. You follow your inspirations, for better or for worse. At times, you display an extraordinary clairvoyance gift. You seem to be able to read your subconscious like a book, and you track down subtle underlying mechanisms, flaws, or open breaches. This innate intuition might explain the strokes of good luck which the Neptunian is sometimes credited with. However, you may also be the victim of illusions and misleading intuitions. You are an idealist, and you let your deepest aspirations prevail over the realities of the moment. Then, you set off in quest of some quixotic objective, living like a Don Quixote who relentlessly pursues an impossible dream. You have a great talent for psychology and the mysteries of the human soul. Since you instinctively perceive people's intents and motivations, as you swim in the complexity of human nature, you feel in your element. The subtlety of your perceptiveness is the source of both special affections and irrevocable rejections. What is the danger of such a dominant? If it is not offset by other influences in your natal chart, you may not have an iron will. Your trump card is your instinct, which may be developed to the extent that it becomes clairvoyance.

Interpretation of the 12° Scorpio symbolic degree

"A crenellated tower on a rock overlooking the sea." (Janduz version)

Independent, reserved, and inscrutable, yet pleasant character. One is a loner, and even with family members and friends, one instinctively keeps one's distance. However, one's intelligence, trustworthiness, and courage win people's respect and affection. This degree indicates success and steady wealth. It also gives the taste for travels.

Pluto represents deep transformations, mutations and eliminations, sexuality and magnetism, power and secrets, destruction with a view to regeneration, the phoenix rising from the ashes. Its element is indefinite; burning (like lava in fusion ?), it rules Scorpio, is in exaltation in Pisces and is in analogy with the sexual organs and excretion.

It represents dictators, sadistic people, violent characters, is instinctive and powerful but also mysterious with hidden strengths.

Temperament: rather Bilious

Characterology: Emotive or non-Emotive, Active, Primary type; it is a Passionate Choleric type.

Pluto in Virgo

The planet Pluto symbolizes deep disruptions and upheavals, domination and sexual instincts, and the inner power we have in ourselves. Pluto destroys in order to reconstruct and he provokes painful crises that are needed in metamorphosis. Pluto is our deepest instincts’ brutal force. It is the hidden and unconscious violence that can explode in us with incredible intensity before being projected in our actions; in itself, the planet is not negative: the might and the intensity of its energy are beyond the conceivable but it can be funnelled. Pluto is the only possibility we have at our disposal to overcome our inner blocks and to eliminate outgrown situations that have become inextricable. Pluto’s energy is valuable because of its usefulness for the irreversible destruction of what constitutes a problem and not because of its negative side and its perversity. Pluto allows to reconstruct and to regenerate parts of our personality or whole stretches of our life, provided that we manage to funnel his wild energy and to step back. It is impossible to tame this energy, given its essence. However, it is possible to take advantage of it for a precise aim, through a temporary identification of some parts of us with this energy. In such a case, the outcome is our final evolution and even, our transformation. In your natal chart, Pluto’s house position is more important than his sign position because, like Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, Pluto is a slow planet. Many people born in the same period have Pluto in the same sign. This is the reason why the sign occupied here is less meaningful than when it is occupied by the so-called fast planets, i.e. the Sun, the Moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars. Therefore, some caution is to be exercised as you read what follows. The sign positions of Uranus, Neptune and Pluto have a collective meaning. They do not influence your personality and they are not to be really taken into account, unless they are involved in numerous aspects or when they emphasize a personal point of your natal chart such as your Ascendant’s ruler, an angular planet, i.e. a planet near the Ascendant, the Midheaven, the Nadir or the Descendant. In such cases, the activity of the slow planet is very highlighted. Pluto in Virgo brings about achievement capacities but obsessions also, because your natural instinct and anxiety give you the propensity to be doubtful.

Pluto in House VII

With Pluto in the 7th House, to hell with social norms! Relationships are born and disappear according to how events develop. It may be best then that you remain clear-sighted and sceptical about human constructions such as associations, couples, encounters, and exchanges. You understand the illusory nature of social codes, and you keep your distance from relationships, particularly from the most intimate ones. What is hiding in other people's look?

Pluto Dominant

If Pluto is part of your natal chart's planetary dominants, in astrology, you are said to be a Plutonian: you sometimes feel like a foreigner who does not belong to the world, to its laws, and its concerns. The rules of life in society are not necessarily yours. You are interested in what is unknown and in the subtle laws of a hidden order. So, you take malicious pleasure in ridiculing the patterns you find too simplistic or too rigid. You also revel in underlining the limits of explanations you deem too common. There is something unconventional about the way you are, the way you think, and the way you act. What is your specificity made of? Is it an extraordinary partner? A life off the beaten path? Or do you only distance yourself from conventional morals? In any case, you have the feeling, sometimes quite vague, that you come from nowhere, and that you do not belong to any definite group... In short, it means that you cannot be simplified in order to conform to existing models. The gap between you and ordinary mortals is also an element of your strength. Your deep clear-sightedness, firstly, enables you to put things into perspective and to grant them only the attention they deserve. Your other remarkable asset is your capacity to intervene from behind the scenes, to secretly organise events, and to bring about the desirable outcome without seeming to impose or to dictate anything. However, you must still overcome one of the major difficulties of this dominant, which is to get people to accept your difference and to smoothly fit into your environment.

Interpretation of the 11° Virgo symbolic degree

"A wealthy man and woman, blindfolded, are led by Cupid. In their back, two thieves are about to rob them." (Janduz version)

Romantic relationships are fraught with dangers. Beneath selfless and nice attitudes, so-called friends are driven by the lure of profit only. This degree indicates trickery and falsity, whether one is the perpetrator or the victim.

N.B.: symbolic degrees belong to a branch of fatalistic astrology. Their interpretation must be regarded with the utmost caution, especially given the fact that different authors give different meanings to symbolic degrees. This is the reason why they are not included in our Astrotheme reports.

Chiron is almost renowned and used everywhere. Most astrologers consider it as a kind of "mediator" between Saturn and outer planets. Consequently, Chiron is of Saturn's nature and at the same time is influenced by Uranus, the first slow-moving planet. Astrologically, it symbolizes wisdom, patience and the faculty to reduce others' sufferings: it is said to be the "great healer" of the zodiac. Like all the secondary bodies, it must be in close conjunction with planets or angles in order to fully express its action.

Ceres, the biggest of the four minor asteroids used besides Chiron, is associated with the mythological goddess of growing plants and harvest and also symbolizes physical constitution, vitality and fertility. She's also known as Demeter, according to the astrologer Zipporah Dobyns, linked to the symbolism of the mother but in a less emotive and more physical way than the Moon. Ceres is thought to be the ruler of Virgo, in exaltation in Gemini, in exile in Pisces and in fall in Sagittarius. Keywords associated with Ceres could be order, practical sense, worry, precision, modesty, method, sobriety, motherhood, fertility, the Earth: a kind of a more cerebral Moon...

True North Node 20°10' Я Cancer, in House V

The North Node (True Node here) represents the goals that must be achieved during life, in the karmic sense according to some traditions. Its position in house indicates in what field an effort is necessary in order to evolve. The North Node is often called the Dragon's head, it is usually considered beneficial, a bit like Jupiter with the planets. The Lunar nodes are fictional points and not actual heavenly bodies: they are the intersections of the Moon with the Ecliptic (the path made by the Sun in its orbit as seen from the Earth). The axis of the Lunar nodes moves 19 degrees each year, namely a bit more than three minutes each day.

The South Node is diametrically opposed to the North Node, therefore it faces it (it's not drawn here, it's the same symbol but upside down). It symbolizes what has already been achieved or acquired, in a karmic sense: it's the past from which it's advised to move on in order to progress. The South Node is rather negative, of a Saturnian nature: the experience through suffering.

Interpretation of the 20° Cancer symbolic degree

"A waning moon glimmers amid the clouds over the ocean and a ship in distress." (Janduz version)

Intelligent, fickle, and fidgety character. One undertakes too many things at the same time and, in most cases, one succeeds in none. Journeys on water and across the seas may result in big losses. Stability and perseverance are a must. It is indispensable to carefully plan one's projects before implementing them. Otherwise, wishful thinking prevails, and one goes from one failure to another.

N.B.: symbolic degrees belong to a branch of fatalistic astrology. Their interpretation must be regarded with the utmost caution, especially given the fact that different authors give different meanings to symbolic degrees. This is the reason why they are not included in our Astrotheme reports.

True Lilith 29°25' Libra, in House VIII

Lilith or the Dark Moon (True Lilith here) represents the uncrossable threshold, taboos, the individual's provocative and fascinating side, including on a sexual level. She symbolizes violence and "untameability", the radical and deep-seated refusal to submit. The keywords for Lilith can be sterility, sadism, perversity, castration, sadomasochism, eroticism, orgasm, forbidden fantasies, marginality, cruelty; redemption, illumination, rebelliousness... Lilith's opposite point is called Priapus; it is the Lunar perigee, the position where the Moon is closest to the Earth. It symbolizes man's primitive nature, the horror hidden in our deepest self; masochism, extreme sensuality, impulsiveness, irrationality and excess. Physically speaking, the Dark Moon is the focal point unoccupied by the Earth: it is not a concrete body but a mathematical point.

Interpretation of the 29° Libra symbolic degree

"In a clearing, a man lying on a heap of clothes notices neither the sparrow hawk gliding above him, nor the wolf and the snake ready to attack." (Janduz version)

Reckless, lazy, and carefree character devoid of discernment capacity. One is unable to properly analyse a situation, and one feels in security even though danger is lurking. Friends are driven by their self-interest and give bad advices, which bring about misfortunes of all kinds, physical, financial, or affective ones.

N.B.: symbolic degrees belong to a branch of fatalistic astrology. Their interpretation must be regarded with the utmost caution, especially given the fact that different authors give different meanings to symbolic degrees. This is the reason why they are not included in our Astrotheme reports.

Fortune 7°54' Cancer, in House IV

The Part of Fortune is an ancient concept, used by Ptolemy and other astrologers before him. Firstly, it has nothing to do with fortune! In modern astrology, it is actually used to enhance a planet or angle when in close conjunction with it: it thus amplifies the meaning associated to the point affected by its presence. It is calculated in the following way:

Part of Fortune = AS + Moon - Sun (it is the Moons position when the Sun rises)

The classical Part of Fortune, of which the calculus method is unchanged whether in a diurnal or nocturnal chart, is usually distinguished from the diurnal/nocturnal Part of Fortune which is calculated by the formula AS + Sun - Moon for a nocturnal chart, and AS + Moon - Sun in a diurnal chart.

We currently use the latter formula for our astrological programmes.

For more information, see the page dedicated to the Arabian parts.

Interpretation of the 7° Cancer symbolic degree

"A young woman hidden in a Temple of Love stares fearlessly at a snake ready to pounce on a bird." (Janduz version)

Self-lenient and weak-willed character. One always listens to one's instincts. This degree indicates that the family life is unhappy and that secret relationships may result in marital breakdown. Good moral standards are indispensable.

N.B.: symbolic degrees belong to a branch of fatalistic astrology. Their interpretation must be regarded with the utmost caution, especially given the fact that different authors give different meanings to symbolic degrees. This is the reason why they are not included in our Astrotheme reports.

Ascendant 8°17' Pisces

Pluto opposite Ascendant orb -2°43'
Uranus opposite Ascendant orb -3°50'
Mars inconjunction Ascendant orb -0°12'
Neptune trine Ascendant orb -4°39'

The First House or Ascendant represents one's behaviour in the eyes of others, and also one's health. It corresponds to the way the individual acts in the world. It is the image of the personality seen by others and the person's visible behaviour expressed outwardly. The 1st House is in analogy with Aries and thus Mars too, and then the Sun. It is an angular house, the most important one with the Midheaven, maybe even more so due to its link with the body and health.

Ascendant in Pisces

Your psychological nature is adaptive and receptive, the exact opposite of the sign of Virgo whose very essence is to thoroughly analyze each thing, thus creating a permanent duality between the self and the outside world: conversely, Pisces absorb and wipe out any form of differentiation; with Pisces, there can be no opposition, no conflict, no individual reaction. There is only fusion, non-separation, perpetual and mobile spreading of the self over some sort of blurred but huge feeling of sympathy with the environment. It is the supreme reign of feelings and emotions over the intellect and its separating reason.

With this Ascendant, you come across as emotional, sensitive, dedicated, adaptable, nice, wild, compassionate, romantic, imaginative, flexible, opportunist, intuitive, impossible to categorized, irrational, seductive, placid, secretive, introverted, pleasant, artistic, and charming. But you may also be indecisive, moody, confused, wavering, lazy, scatterbrained, vulnerable, unpredictable and gullible.

Interpretation of the 8° Pisces symbolic degree

"An old man in worn out but clean clothes walks down a hill towards a small cottage which seems to be awaiting him with its door wide open and smoke coming out from its chimney." (Janduz version)

Calm, courageous, and reliable character endowed with a remarkable power of persuasion and a strong sense of duty. For professional or political reasons, one travels from one foreign country to another. One tackles dangers and hurdles with dedication and without disclosing the details of the feats accomplished. After a host of adventures, one eventually goes back home to enjoy a quiet, simple, and happy life amid a host of vivid memories.

N.B.: symbolic degrees belong to a branch of fatalistic astrology. Their interpretation must be regarded with the utmost caution, especially given the fact that different authors give different meanings to symbolic degrees. This is the reason why they are not included in our Astrotheme reports.

Jupiter trine Midheaven orb +1°10'
Saturn sextile Midheaven orb +1°41'

Pluto square Midheaven orb +7°17'

The Tenth House still called the Midheaven, is the highest point amidst the houses, at the top of the chart, in the South, and relates to destiny in general and career (and not daily work as meant by the Sixth House). The Midheaven represents our achievements and goals in the social sphere, our social position in society, and becomes more and more important as we get older. It is in analogy with Capricorn and Saturn. The Tenth House is the most important angular house along with the Ascendant.

Midheaven in Sagittarius

Your destiny is commensurate with the image of your deeply sociable and exuberant nature. You always look at things in broad and optimistic ways, and you rapidly get the status matching your high calibre. You make use of your charm and your boldness, and you have the guts to aim higher than what would be the norm. In this regard, you are the opposite of Virgo people, but it does not matter because your method proves efficient and in any case, the result fulfils your ambition at least.

The following professions are most likely to suit you very well: explorer, pilot, taxi and lorry driver, jockey, manager of a racehorse stable, international businessman/woman and any expatriate job, corporate manager, tour operator and travel agent, import-export trader, serviceman/woman, magistrate, politician, ambassador, sociologist, priest/priestess, or spiritual leader.

Interpretation of the 18° Sagittarius symbolic degree

"As it tries to escape from a burning house, a snake is stopped by a circle of fire." (Janduz version)

Passionate, wily, and spiteful character. Fire plays a major part in life, whether it represents a disaster or a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity with great consequences on destiny. Regardless of the nature of ordeals and opponents, and despite the losses suffered, if one displays courage, this degree indicates that obstacles can be overcome and enemies, defeated.

Interpretation of the 18° Gemini symbolic degree

"A wretched man courageously leaves his beautiful mansion behind him. His wife, in a lavish dress, follows him with deep regret and looks back at their former abode." (Janduz version)

Interpretation of the 8° Virgo symbolic degree

"A man and a woman wearing a mask stand at both ends of a table on which there are bags of money and beautiful fruits. The woman protects the money with her hand while the man grasps a fruit." (Janduz version)

Sociable and generous character lacking willpower. It seems that money falls on one's laps, whether it comes through inheritance or through work. However, one does not know how to deal with it, and it becomes a source of troubles because of a female's machinations. One is driven by greed and passions and may fall prey of dishonest people.

House XII 3°12' Aquarius

The Twelfth House is the sphere of hidden things, enemies, closed or remote places (hospital, prison, convent etc.), ordeals, secrecy, solitude, long-term illnesses but also sincere devotion and genuine compassion. It is in analogy with Pisces and Neptune.

Vertex 20°48' Virgo, in House VII

The Vertex, sometimes called counter-Ascendant, is a fictitious point which is at the intersection of two great circles, the Ecliptic and the great vertical circle (Prime Vertical) in the West of the birthplace, linking the East, the Zenith, the West, and the Nadir. It is always located in the West of the chart around the Descendant. It is the chart's fifth angle, so to speak, less important than the other angles. Its interpretation is controversial, because certain astrologers pay no attention to it.

The Vertex is sometimes considered to be the second Descendant because, like the latter, it is related to communication and exchanges. It has to do with associations and fated encounters, those that are not chosen, and reveals the type of sensitivity and reactivity we have in our dealings with other people: a refined and tolerant way in Libra, straightforward and spontaneous in Aries, etc.

Interpretation of the 20° Virgo symbolic degree

"A food wholesaler holds a heavy bag of money in one hand and silver coins in the other." (Janduz version)

Petty, stingy, and mercenary character. One is interested in financial profits and strives relentlessly to increase one's wealth, considering every penny spent, including those meant to meet basic daily needs such as meals and clothes. Speculations in food and raw materials are very lucrative.

N.B.: symbolic degrees belong to a branch of fatalistic astrology. Their interpretation must be regarded with the utmost caution, especially given the fact that different authors give different meanings to symbolic degrees. This is the reason why they are not included in our Astrotheme reports.

East Point 16°12' Pisces, in House I

The East Point is a fictitious point at the intersection of two great circles, the Ecliptic and the great vertical circle (Prime Vertical) in the East of the birthplace, linking the East, the Zenith, the West, and the Nadir. It is always located in the East of the chart, around the Ascendant.

The East Point is sometimes considered to be a second Ascendant, less important, but also related to how one is seen by other people, and to how one expresses one's personality.

Interpretation of the 16° Pisces symbolic degree

"A man falling off a bridge calls for help, while another man throws himself into the river to commit suicide." (Janduz version)

Pessimistic, misanthropic, and withdrawn character. Instead of shutting oneself away in an ivory tower, one ought to seek the company of cheerful and devoted friends. In the professional area, partnerships must be given priority because they can offset the threat of bankruptcy portended by this degree and ensure a decent standard of living. Dangers come from depressive tendencies and from water.

N.B.: symbolic degrees belong to a branch of fatalistic astrology. Their interpretation must be regarded with the utmost caution, especially given the fact that different authors give different meanings to symbolic degrees. This is the reason why they are not included in our Astrotheme reports.

Poseidon brings about wisdom, a clear mind, and sometimes spirituality. On the downside, it may make the person dogmatic, manipulative, or out of touch with reality.

Proserpina, sometimes referred to as Persephone, is a trans-Plutonian hypothetical planet. N.B.: numerous astrologers believe neither in the influence of Proserpina, nor in that of all hypothetical planets, asteroids, Arabic parts or other fictitious points.

Proserpina is related to mysteries, revival and reconstruction, as well as cycles. She enriches the unconscious, and gives the possibility to combine modern life with spirituality, the East with the West, and mysticism with concrete life.
