Uranus on the Ascendant Marks a Rebellious Genius
Kurt Cobain, at the origin of the grunge culture in the nineties, and founder of the Nirvana band, had a destiny as short as striking. His natal chart catches the eye because two opposite signs are highlighted, namely, Pisces, sheltering the Sun, Mercury and Venus, and Virgo, where the Uranus-Pluto conjunction merges with the Ascendant. Let us examine how those forces expressed themselves for Cobain.
Born in a humble family in Seattle, he was very sensitive, like many people having the Sun in Pisces. He seemed to have suffered from the divorce of his parents. Anyway, it is probable that they did not make the right choices for their son. The father wanted to push him towards sports, while the mother thought that he had psychological disorders (hyperactivity, and provocative response to authority). This was already a very bad start for the adolescent who apparently was not understood.
His chart shows the confirmation of this problem, since the Ascendant in Virgo may give lack of self-confidence or at least discreet and reasonable tendencies; Mercury, the chart ruler, is in opposition with this angle and in square with the Midheaven.
It is also necessary to mention the role of Uranus, rising in the 1st House, while Pluto is still in the 12th. Owing to this feature, the singer has always felt different from people. Indeed, his personality contrasted so much with that of the average man that his success was similar to a large-scale explosion.
Uranus on the Ascendant may also endow with what is considered a mark of genius, or in any case, outstanding and rigorous (Virgo) creativity. Uranus is involved in a powerful T-Square pattern including the Ascendant and Pluto, and on the other side, Mercury, Venus, Saturn, and the Midheaven in Gemini. This pattern describes perfectly well a difficult destiny.
Although this is not a mark of fatality, the fact remains that social advancement, "success" in the usual sense of the word, had been achieved at the cost of painful sacrifices.
The influence of Pluto in the 12th House and in opposition with the chart ruler was responsible for this.
Deep Inspiration of the Mystical Sun in Pisces
Despite this adverse family context, at first, Cobain was able to overcome the negative tendencies of this configuration by literally having a religious relationship with music.
As he said himself, art was a way to escape a dull life offering no exciting prospect. His first steps were revealing of the influence of Pisces, would it be only through the choice of the name of the group, Nirvana, a tribute to Far-Eastern currents as well as to the Beatniks. Besides, the singer's low voice played a large part in the bewitching powers of his ballads.
However, critics had severely judged the lyrics of Cobain's compositions, often qualified of incoherent. This is typical of Pisces. This does not matter, since in 1992, the second album released by Nirvana, Nevermind, conquered the crowds and the planet.
Auspicious Role of the Water Grand Trine and Popularity
Cobain's portrait would not be comprehensive without mentioning the Water Grand Trine linking Jupiter in the 10th, Neptune in the 3rd, and Venus-Saturn in the 7th. We observe here the beneficial effects, broad-range too, of this major pattern which gave Cobain talent and fame so early.
A whole generation born at the end of the sixties and in the eighties gathered in the musical trend promoted by Nirvana, a little bit like the Beatles, who inspired Cobain.
Nevertheless, unlike the British group, the man born in Seattle delivered a much more disillusioned message. "I do not think that it is great to be on MTV twenty times per day, except for the sales of the album. As far as the image of the group is concerned, it is catastrophic. We are really thought to be an ordinary consumer good", Cobain complained. This illustrates well the dilemma between Virgo, having no problem with commercial optimisation, and idealistic Pisces, in the purity of their fascinating but at times cruel world.
Unfortunately, profound discontentment in life and Cobain's drug addiction weighed heavily on both the future of the group and Cobain's.
The role of Venus must also be underlined. She was involved in his descent into hell, which translated particularly in his love-destruction with Courtney Love. They were linked by their own demons as tightly as by cocaine.
Astrological Signs Accompanying the Death
On 8 April 1994, Cobain was found death in his house of Seattle. He was 27. He committed suicide by shooting himself in the head three days earlier. On this date, there was a more than significant transit of Mars and Mercury at 22° Pisces exactly on the natal Descendant, between Mercury, just activated, and shortly later on natal Venus and Saturn.
This passage reactivated the natal opposition pattern as well as the T-Square with the Midheaven. It is true that it was not aggravated by additional harsh aspects, but given the planets at play, this moment was a dangerous omen.
Karmic astrologers paid attention to the return of the Lunar Nodes in opposition with their position at birth. It was in this occasion that this fact was noticed, since other personalities passed away at the same age. Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, and Brian Jones were members of this gruesome Club, sometimes referred to as Forever 27 Club. Later, there were Amy Winehouse too, and Jonathan Brandis, Anton Yelchin, or Jean-Michel Basquiat, among other famous people having a precocious destiny.
Everyone is free to evaluate whether this common feature played a role, bearing in mind that the whole natal data must be examined. In Cobain's chart, the North Node in Taurus was in the 6th House, the House of crises. Therefore, the return for the date of 5 April 1994 put the South Node at this place. Since this configuration was in touch with Cobain's Part of Fortune, we may interpret it as the huge popularity and the fascination he enjoys beyond death, nearly thirty years afterwards.
