Claude Lévi-Strauss (French pronunciation: ; (Brussels, 28 November 1908 – Paris, 1 November 2009) was a French anthropologist, known as the "father of modern anthropology". Early life, education and career Claude Lévi-Strauss was born to Jewish-French parents who were living in Brussels at the time, as his father, a painter, had taken a contract to paint there. He grew up in Paris, living in a street of the 16th arrondissement named after the artist Claude Lorrain, whose work he later admired and wrote about.
