His Eminence Jean-Marie Cardinal Lustiger (French pronunciation: /ʒɑ̃ maʀi lystiʒe/) (September 17, 1926 – August 5, 2007) was a French prelate of the Roman Catholic Church. He was the Archbishop emeritus of Paris, having served as archbishop from 1981 until his resignation in 2005. He was elevated to the cardinalate in 1983.Career Lustiger was born Aaron Lustiger in Paris, to the Polish Jews Charles and Gisèle Lustiger, whose family had settled in France before World War I. When the Germans occupied France in 1940, he was sent to live with a Christian family in Orléans.
