He is the son of Ramon Fernandez, a literary critic whose reputation was tarnished when he served on the executive committee of the Parti Populaire Français, collaborating with France's Nazi occupiers. His son's inaugural speech in the Academy was a defense of his father. As the hilt of the ceremonial sword of his Academy uniform, Fernandez chose a representation of Ganymede.
